Never before has the BMW 3 Series been so dynamic! BMW M GmbH is unveiling the new BMW M340i xDrive. Debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show from 30 November to 9 December, the newcomer is due for market launch in spring 2019. But already it promises abundant sportiness, thanks primarily to the all-new 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder petrol engine. With output of 275 kW/374 hp, performance is up a full 35 kW/48 hp. The BMW M340i accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, half a second faster than its predecessor.

The Adaptive M Suspension with variable sport steering is the perfect complement to the performance of the new engine and combines with the latest-generation 8-speed Steptronic Sports transmission. The intelligent all-wheel drive system, BMW xDrive, distributes the power fully variably between the front and rear axles. The BMW M 340i also comes with the M Sport differential as standard, ensuring absolute driving stability, M Sport brakes offering superior deceleration, and 18-inch M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres.

The BMW M340i xDrive's superior performance is reflected in its design. The front apron, side sills and rear spoiler offer optimised aerodynamics and cooling-air supplies. Special visual elements include the mesh-design BMW kidney grille and trapezoid tailpipe surrounds. Inside, sports seats with Sensatec and Alcantara upholstery as well as the anthracite-coloured BMW Individual headliner, BMW M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, and interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon create a fitting sporty ambience.

The new BMW M 340i is due for market launch in Europe in July 2019. In the US it will be available earlier, in April.

The new BMW 8 Series Convertible.

BMW is forging ahead with its model offensive in the luxury segment with the presentation of an open-top sports car which explores the highest reaches of dynamic flair, emotionality and exclusivity. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible blends ultra-sporty driving properties with distinctive design elegance and offers an extremely exclusive passport to hallmark BMW driving pleasure and a full-blooded open-top driving experience.

Its progressive character is underscored by cutting-edge driver assistance systems, a latest-generation display and control system and up-to-the-minute connectivity technology including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Two extremely powerful engines will be available from launch in March 2019. The 390 kW V8 petrol engine in the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible takes to the stage with characterful power delivery and a soundtrack to match. The BMW 840d xDrive Convertible is fitted with a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine developing 235 kW.

Exterior design: powerful design language, distinctive lines.

The BMW brand’s new design language employs precisely drawn lines and muscular surfacing to give the new BMW 8 Series Convertible a distinctive aura defined as much by sporting prowess as outright elegance. With an exterior length of 4,843 millimetres, width of 1,902 millimetres and height of 1,339 millimetres, plus a 2,822-millimetre wheelbase and track widths of 1,619 millimetres (front) and 1,642 millimetres (rear), its dimensions match those of the BMW 8 Series Coupe almost exactly. The body cuts a dynamically stretched figure, especially with the roof down.

The protruding front apron lends the front end of the car undeniable athletic presence with its large air intakes. Adaptive LED Headlights are part of standard specification. Meanwhile, the optional BMW Laserlight with variable road illumination and Selective Beam generates a high-beam range of around 600 metres. The eye-catching surfacing of the car’s flanks is complemented at the transition into the rear end by distinctive contouring around its rear haunches. Horizontal lines, light units extending well into the flanks and a third brake light integrated into the boot lid all contribute to the low-slung, wide impression created by the rear end.

Soft-top roof with fully-electric operation.

The new BMW 8 Series Convertible’s folding roof stands out with its weight- minimising design and superb acoustic insulation. It pulls taut over the interior when closed, lending the car a strikingly stepped, coupe-like silhouette. The soft-top opens and closes fully automatically and at the touch of a button in 15 seconds. The extremely hushed roof operation can be activated with the car travelling at up to 50 km/h. When opened, the soft-top stows away under a cover whose surface structure and stitching match those of the instrument panel and interior door/side panel trim, and which features eye-catching domes at the level of the rear seats.

Harmonious design of exterior and interior.

The cohesive harmony between the exterior and interior is revealed particularly effectively when the soft-top is down. The occupants of the four seats are surrounded by the sweeping flow of the instrument panel, the door shoulders, the shoulder area around the rear seats and the soft-top compartment cover. The side window border sits flush with the soft-top compartment surround, underlining the connection between the front and rear of the car.

The entire ambience of the interior conveys dynamism, elegance and distinctive luxury, and the standard ambient lighting emphasises the forward- focused lines inside the car. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible is also furnished with full leather trim for the instrument panel and door shoulders, plus electrically adjustable sports seats and leather upholstery.

Characterful V8 petrol engine, silky-smooth six-cylinder diesel engine.

A 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine from the latest generation infuses the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible with imposing power delivery, its characterful soundtrack given further impact by the flap-controlled M sports exhaust system. The engine’s M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology includes two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling nestling in the V between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.

Developing 390 kW and peak torque of 750 Nm, the V8 accelerates the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

The new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible benefits from a type of engine no other car in its segment can offer – a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel. The unit’s BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises multi-stage turbocharging and common-rail direction injection with piezo injectors. The maximum output of 235 kW and peak torque of 680 Nm encourage relaxed cruising at low engine speeds and powerful mid-range sprints (accompanied by the model-specific sports exhaust system’s fully-throated soundtrack) in equal measure. The BMW 840d xDrive Convertible accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, BMW xDrive, M Sport differential.

Both engines channel their power through to the road via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system is tuned to have an appreciably rear-wheel bias in the new BMW 8 Series Convertible, ensuring it offers the signature driving experience of a BMW sports car. Dynamic performance is further enhanced by the M Sport differential also fitted as standard on the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe. As well as improving traction, the locking effect produced by an electric motor in the rear differential optimises the car’s agility, and is particularly effective in enhancing dynamic acceleration out of corners.

The chassis: know-how from the race track delivers unbeatable dynamics on the road.

The construction principles underpinning the chassis and the deployment of BMW M GmbH racing expertise to optimise its set-up maximise the car’s agility, precision and performance. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible comes as standard with mixed tyres and Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Thanks to finely metered spring and damping responses, the driver is provided with only relevant information on the road surface. The likewise standard Integral Active Steering reduces the car’s turning circle when manoeuvring, increases agility and optimises poise and assurance when changing lanes and cornering at high speeds.

State-of-the-art driver assistance systems enhance comfort and safety.

Comfort and safety on board the new BMW 8 Series Convertible are boosted by state-of-the-art driver assistance systems. Standard equipment includes the Head-Up Display and the Driving Assistant, which comprises the Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning system with City Braking function, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning, Speed Limit Info, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Collision warning. Among the items on the options list are Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Driving Assistant Professional (extra features include the Steering and lane control assistant) and BMW Night Vision. Also standard is the Parking Assistant, which includes a rear-view camera and the Reversing Assistant.

Intuitive operation and flawless connectivity: BMW Operating System 7.0 and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The new BMW 8 Series Convertible comes as standard with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional. This includes a navigation and multimedia system, a fully digital, high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a Control Display measuring 10.25 inches across. The new BMW Operating System 7.0 stands out with its cutting-edge, digital functions tailored precisely to the driver’s requirements. When it comes to intuitive operation options, drivers can choose from touchscreen functionality via the Control Display, the iDrive Controller, buttons on the steering wheel and voice control.

Another element of the operating system is the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. The first-ever BMW X7.

BMW has pulled back the covers on a new definition of automotive luxury. The BMW X7 blends lavish presence, exclusivity and spaciousness with the versatile and agile driving properties customers would expect from a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The latest and largest model in the BMW X line-up uses its outstanding powertrain and chassis technology, plus generous levels of space in each of its three rows of seats, a luxurious ambience and advanced equipment features, to deliver an unparalleled driving and interior experience. BMW’s new design language brings the modern elegance characteristic of the brand’s luxury-segment models to the exterior of the BMW X7, and adds visual poise, assurance and an overriding sense of authority.

Adding the BMW X7 to its portfolio forms part of the BMW Group’s ongoing model offensive in the luxury segment, which is itself a key element in the company’s NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy. The X7 will be built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the US, and its market launch will begin in March 2019.

A new measure of authority, luxury and modernity.

At 5,151 millimetres in length, 2,000 millimetres wide and 1,805 millimetres tall, and with a wheelbase of 3,105 millimetres, the BMW X7 displays harmonious proportions and establishes itself very clearly as the new head of the BMW X model family. The new design language, dominated by precise lines and expansive surfaces, intensifies the car’s authoritative aura. The prominent front end, with its exceptionally large BMW kidney grille, gives the car an undeniable sense of presence.

The car’s defining features when viewed from the side are its large windows, high ground clearance and long roofline.  Horizontal lines, slim LED lights and the two-section split tailgate emphasise the contemporary styling of the rear end.

The interior: More space for an exclusive ambience.

The impressive open expanses of the BMW X7 interior bring a fresh sensation of space to the luxury segment. The three rows of seats treat the driver and passengers to an exceptional feeling of roominess within the X7’s elegantly appointed surrounds.

The two passengers in the third row settle into full-size seats complete with armrests, cupholders and USB ports. The middle row can be composed of two individual comfort seats as an option. All seats are adjusted electrically at the push of a button. The boot capacity can be increased from 326 to a maximum of 2,120 litres, as required.

Carefully selected and meticulously crafted materials add to the feeling of luxury, as does the extensive standard specification. The BMW X7 comes as standard with Vernasca leather trim, four-zone automatic climate control, a three-section panoramic glass roof, and ambient lighting including the Welcome Light Carpet and Dynamic Interior Light. Among the highlights on the options list are five-zone automatic climate control, the Ambient Air package, the Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge, controls with glass applications, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and the Rear-seat entertainment Professional system. Meanwhile, the Design Pure Excellence equipment line, M Sport package and BMW Individual options allow customers to tailor the interior and exterior design to reflect their personal style.

Powertrain and driving experience: First-class comfort meets versatile performance.

With its powerful engines, BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and newly developed, precisely tuned chassis technology, the BMW X7 boasts a blend of dynamism, poise and versatility that is unrivalled in the luxury segment. The largest representative of the BMW X family sticks to the proven formula of off-road prowess combined with excellent ride comfort and agile on-road handling for which the brand’s Sports Activity Vehicles are renowned.

The line-up of engines available at launch comprises a newly developed petrol V8 in the BMW X7 xDrive50i, a six-cylinder in-line petrol unit for the BMW X7 xDrive40i and a pair of six-cylinder in-line diesels to power the BMW X7 xDrive30d and BMW X7 M50d M Performance model. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology for the petrol engines comprises turbocharging, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. On the diesel side, the raft of technological measures includes turbochargers and common-rail direct injection with piezo injectors. All the engines channel their power via an eight- speed Steptronic transmission.

The BMW X7 boasts a wealth of chassis technology as standard, including Adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers, and air springs at both axles. The vehicle’s ground clearance can be varied by up to 80 millimetres to suit the situation at hand – by either pressing a button or using the BMW Display Key.

An Off- Road package is also available for all model variants aside from the BMW X7 M50d. This package includes an extra button for choosing between four driving modes – xSand, xGravel, xRocks and xSnow. These modes prepare the car for the surface in question by activating the ideal settings for ride height, the xDrive system, accelerator and transmission responses, and DSC inputs.

Highly sophisticated driver assistance systems enhance comfort and safety.

The progressive luxury epitomised by the new BMW X7 is further underlined by the comprehensive, market-specific array of driver assistance systems available for enhancing comfort and safety. These cutting-edge systems process camera images together with the data gathered by radar sensors, and are able to help drivers extremely effectively in a variety of situations. They ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions, such as traffic jams and heavy flowing traffic, and make it easier to stay in complete control in awkward traffic situations. In a nutshell, these systems mark the latest advances on the road to automated driving.

As well as the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, customers can also opt for the Driving Assistant Professional package comprising the Steering and lane control assistant, Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning, the Lane Change Assistant, the Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision protection, the evasion aid and Crossing traffic warning. Live Cockpit Professional with BMW Operating System 7.0 as standard.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings BMW Operating System 7.0 to the new BMW X7. The operating system’s most recent incarnation boasts all- digital displays and is geared even more closely to the driver’s personal needs – with the aim of maximising their attention levels. The system’s clear presentation and structuring are designed to provide drivers with the right information at the right time, aided further by the customisable and personalised content.

The Control Display graphics adapt depending on the operating method, the voice control system based on natural language understanding is better than ever and the optional gesture control now includes two extra gestures, bringing the total to seven. Depending on the situation, the driver can choose from the familiar iDrive Controller, the steering wheel controls, touch control, voice control or gesture control.

BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive. Digital, intelligent and totally connected.

Standard specification for the new BMW X7 includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital helper that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. From March 2019 it will be an integral element of the control and operating system / customers will be able to add it to their vehicle by Remote Software Upgrade.  The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant represents a revolution in driving pleasure from the BMW Group; it marks the start of a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car, access its functions and obtain information simply by speaking.

Turning passengers into co-drivers.

The new BMW X7 also lets passengers in the front and rear mould the driving experience in ways they have never done before. With the driver’s consent, they are able to connect their smartphone to the car using the Connected Command function and then use it to control selected functions. This converts the passengers into co-drivers able to ease the driver’s workload by checking out the journey’s route via BMW Connected, for example, or adjusting the on-board entertainment programme and climate control settings.

The new BMW 3 Series Sedan.

The BMW 3 Series Sedan has epitomised the concept of sporty driving pleasure in the global premium midsize class for more than 40 years. Exuding dynamic design, agile handling, exceptional efficiency and innovative equipment features, it takes the signature characteristics of a BMW and turns the volume up several notches. The sedan represents not only the core of the BMW 3 Series range (of which over 15 million units have now been sold worldwide) but also the heartbeat of the BMW brand.  The seventh generation of the sports sedan moves the game on once again in its segment in terms of driving dynamics, premium quality and innovation.

The world premiere of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan will be hosted by the Mondial de l’Automobile show in Paris in October 2018. The market launch of the car will commence in March 2019. The new model will be produced at BMW’s “home” plant in Munich, at the Tiexi plant in Shenyang run by the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) and the newly constructed BMW Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico.

Exterior design: a clear, precise expression of sporting prowess.

BMW’s new design language showcases the modern and dynamic character of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan with precisely drawn lines and strikingly contoured surfaces. It is 76 millimetres longer than its predecessor, 16 millimetres wider and just 1 mm taller. The car’s 41-millimetre longer wheelbase and increased track widths, meanwhile, have a direct and positive influence on its poise and agility.

The large BMW kidney grille and the headlights leading off it are dominant themes of the front end of the car. Their familiar two-way split is emphasised by an eye-catching notch in the front apron that rises up into the headlight contour. Full-LED headlights come as standard, while the LED headlights with extended features and Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight for non- dazzling high beam are available as an option. The dynamic side view is shaped by a pair of character lines and a dynamic side skirt contour. The trailing edge of the side window graphic with its Hofmeister kink design cue is now integrated into the C-pillar. Horizontal lines and slim, stylishly darkened LED lights give the rear a wide and muscular stance.

Premium ambience and high-quality equipment.

The driver, the front passenger and those travelling in the three rear seats will appreciate the extra space over the predecessor model, not just on long- distance journeys but in everyday driving too. Top-class materials, precise build quality and numerous meticulously crafted details set the tone for the refined premium character of the four-door sedan. The advances brought about by the change of model generation also manifest themselves in the improved acoustic comfort, the superior standard specification and the array of innovative options on offer.

Shoulder room in the front of the cabin has increased particularly notably, passengers in the rear benefit from more legroom, and all occupants now enjoy more headroom than in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan’s predecessor. Seating comfort in the rear has also improved substantially, and long journeys are now a more comfortable experience for the passenger in the middle of the three rear seats.

The premium characteristics of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan can be further enhanced with an array of high-quality and innovative options. The Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport equipment lines help to provide targeted individualisation. Added to which, newly designed steering wheels and interior trim elements, Vernasca and BMW Individual Merino leather trim, an instrument panel in Sensatec plus three-zone automatic climate control and telephony with wireless charging, offer scope for increased comfort and exclusive style. The windscreen is fitted as standard with acoustic glass, which is also available as an option for the side door windows. The optional glass roof has a 100-millimetre longer transparent surface. And the optional ambient lighting results in atmospherically rich illumination, while the Harman Kardon surround sound system delivers exceptional listening pleasure.

The latest generation of engines, delivering power and efficiency.

Responsive power delivery, the free-revving characteristic of BMW, supreme refinement and exemplary efficiency: these are the hallmarks of the petrol and diesel engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology available from market launch for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The upgraded four-cylinder engines from the BMW Group’s Efficient Dynamics family form the basis for the sporty driving experience offered by the BMW 330i (2.0-litre, 190 kW / 400 Nm), BMW 320i (2.0-litre, 135 kW / 300 Nm), BMW 320d (2.0-litre, 140 kW / 400 Nm) and BMW 318d (2.0-litre, 110 kW / 320 Nm). A new-generation six-cylinder in- line diesel engine powers the new BMW 330d Sedan (3.0-litre, 195 kW / 580 Nm). And the addition of units with four cylinders, six cylinders and BMW eDrive technology bring further variety to the range.

Summer 2019 will see a further addition to the drive system portfolio in the form of a plug-in hybrid model. This new generation of the BMW 330e Sedan combines the exceptional driving dynamics of the sports sedan, unrivalled by any other manufacturer, with the latest BMW eDrive technology. At a provisional figure of up to 60 kilometres, the electric range has increased by around a third compared with the predecessor model, while both the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the new BMW 330e Sedan are down by more than 10 per cent – to 1.7 litres per 100 kilometres and 39 grams per kilometre.

Unbeatable dynamic ability: the BMW M340i xDrive BMW M Performance model with new straight-six petrol engine.

Also in summer 2019, the 3 Series range will welcome a compelling new addition at the sharp end of its output spectrum – the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan. The new BMW M Performance model will showcase the full dynamic potential of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. A new six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, bespoke chassis tuning, xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the standard M Sport differential ensure performance attributes that will both impress and challenge the driver.

The new version of the straight-six engine developed for the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan produces maximum output of 275 kW and peak torque of 500 Nm. A 0 – 100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds (provisional figure) takes the BMW M Performance model into the reaches of the performance stratosphere inhabited by high-calibre sports cars.

Innovative chassis technology for sporting performance and driving comfort.

When developing the body structure and chassis technology of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, a number of clear priorities were set: enhanced driving dynamics, agile handling characteristics, high-precision steering and superior braking performance. Overall, the new BMW 3 Series Sedan weighs up to 55 kilograms less than the corresponding predecessor model, depending on the model variant and equipment fitted.

The new BMW 3 Series Sedan also has a low centre of gravity and retains 50 : 50 weight distribution, while the stiffness of the body structure and suspension mountings have been significantly increased. Optimised aerodynamics reduce the car’s drag coefficient to 0.23 (BMW 320d).

For a commanding view: Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight.

For even better visibility when driving at night, customers can opt for the Adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight, which offer variable illumination of the road ahead and a non-dazzling high beam. With this system, the high beam function is enhanced using a BMW Laserlight spotlight with Selective Beam. As a result, the high-beam range is extended to around 530 metres, almost double that of the full-LED headlights. The High Beam Assistant, included in the package, helps to prevent dazzling of oncoming traffic or road users travelling ahead. Blue, L-shaped accents inside the signature twin headlights reveal the presence of this highly sophisticated lighting technology.

Leading the way to automated driving.

The new BMW 3 Series Sedan uses a significantly expanded selection of innovative assistance systems to take a leading role on the road to automated driving. Standard equipment includes Lane Departure Warning, plus Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, the latest version of which also alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. Options include Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and the Driving Assistant with Lane Change Warning, Rear Collision Prevention and Cross- Traffic Alert. Also offered is the Driving Assistant Professional, a complete comfort and safety-enhancing package.

One of the features of the Driving Assistant Professional is the Steering and lane control assistant, which works together with the driver to help keep the vehicle in the detected lane through narrow channels and also includes the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection and the evasion aid. The new-generation BMW Head-Up Display offers a larger projection surface, new graphics and additional display content.

Park Distance Control and the rear view camera assist the driver with manoeuvring and entering/exiting parking spaces. Also available is the Parking Assistant, which takes over steering, acceleration, braking and gear changes with the Steptronic transmission when driving into and out of a space. Its range of functions also includes the Reversing Assistant, which can reverse the vehicle for distances of up to 50 metres by steering it along exactly the same line it has just taken when moving forward.

The new BMW Operating System 7.0 plays a leading role in optimising the control and display system with modern, digital functions geared precisely to the needs of the driver. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional comprises consistently designed, situation-linked and customisable displays on the fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 10.25-inch Control Display. For intuitive operation, the driver can choose from the Control Display’s touch control, the iDrive Controller, the steering wheel buttons, gesture control and voice control.

Making its debut in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital character that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. One unique feature over other digital assistants is that drivers can give him a name. The new BMW Z4.

BMW has a rich history of roadsters that have stood out as icons of pure driving pleasure. And now another is about to join the hall of fame in the shape of the new BMW Z4 – a premium open-top sports car boasting a classic fabric soft-top, an emotion-packed body design and a puristic, driver-focused interior. The two-seater has been systematically designed for maximum agility, thrilling dynamism, plus supremely precise steering characteristics with instantaneous response. The new BMW Z4 combines its sporty on-road prowess with a wealth of highly advanced, top-class equipment features on the driver assistance, operation and connectivity fronts.

The Paris Motor Show will host the show premiere of the new BMW Z4 in October 2018. It will then be launched in March 2019 with a choice of three model variants, including a BMW M Performance option. 

The new BMW Z4 M40i is powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine delivering 250 kW. The BMW Z4 sDrive30i and BMW Z4 sDrive20i, meanwhile, take to the stage with four-cylinder units producing outputs of 190 kW and 145 kW respectively.

Exterior design: a pure aesthetic wrapped in a new design language.

A clear and precise design language and a number of signature details serve up the defining features of the new BMW Z4’s emotionally rich, pure-bred exterior design. The two-seater has a low-slung, sporty, compact appearance whether the soft-top is up or down. With its new-look mesh-design BMW kidney grille and – for the first time – a vertical headlight arrangement, the car cuts an unmistakable figure from the front. The new BMW Z4 is equipped with LED headlights as standard, while the optional Adaptive LED headlights add a matrix function for the non-dazzling high beam and cornering lights.

The elongated bonnet with arrow-shaped contour lines directed at the kidney grille straddles the wheel arches in the “clamshell” style so characteristic of classical sports cars. The joins at the bonnet’s sides merge into the upper character line that runs back along the flanks all the way to the tail lights.  A second character line emerges from the large Air Breather rearwards of the front wheel arch. This interplay of surfaces mimics the flow of air sweeping along the new Z4, while the boot lid’s integral spoiler, slender L-shaped light units and diffuser set the tone for the car’s muscular rear end. There is a choice of nine exterior paint shades and the fabric soft-top comes in Black as standard or Anthracite with silver effect as an option. It is electrically operated and can be opened or closed in ten seconds, even when travelling at up to 50 km/h.

Interior: clear driver focus with a high-class aura.

With its driver-focused cockpit design, lines that surge forward with dynamic élan and trim finishers restricted to just a few areas, the cabin of the new BMW Z4 paints a picture of unadulterated driving pleasure. Electroplated detailing adds to the roadster’s sophisticated ambience, while the clearly structured arrangement of the controls focuses the attention even more on the driving experience.

Both driver and passenger settle into model-specific sports seats with integral head restraints.  The optional draught stop fits flush between the fixed rollover bars. And a storage space behind the seats, cupholders under the centre armrest cover (which folds open in two sections with a longitudinal split) and large door pockets add further practical features. Boot capacity is 281 litres whether the soft-top is open or closed – an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to the outgoing model.

Mighty engines, systematically enhanced chassis.

The engines available for the new Z4 benefit from myriad detail upgrades and promise a pulsating brand of power delivery. They send that power to the road through the latest-generation eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

Hard at work in the BMW Z4 M40i is a 3.0-litre straight-six unit featuring M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. The 250 kW engine generates peak torque of 500 Nm and propels the roadster from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The line-up of engines is completed by a pair of 2.0-litre four-cylinder units. The variant in the new BMW Z4 sDrive30i has 190 kW and 400 Nm, which enables it to complete the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 5.4 seconds. In the new BMW Z4 sDrive20i, meanwhile, maximum output of 145 kW and peak torque of 320 Nm translate into a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.6 seconds.

The chassis technology in the new BMW Z4 has been designed across the board for supreme agility and handling dynamics, and comprises a newly designed double-joint spring strut axle at the front and a five-link rear axle that is making its debut in a BMW roadster. This particular combination strikes just the right balance between sportiness and ride comfort. Another feature on the standard equipment list is variable sport steering with adjustment of both power assistance and steering angle to suit the situation at hand.

The Adaptive M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes and electronically controlled M Sport differential (all part of standard specification for the new BMW Z4 M40i) elevate the car’s sporty handling abilities to even greater heights. With these chassis systems on board, selecting COMFORT, SPORT or SPORT+ mode with the Driving Experience Control switch changes the car’s responses particularly clearly.

Wide array of driver assistance systems enhance comfort and safety.

The class-leading variety of driver assistance systems on offer further underlines the highly advanced character of the new BMW Z4. The Collision Warning, Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function and Lane Departure Warning system all come as standard. The list of options includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, distance information, the Lane Change Warning System, Rear Collision Prevention and Cross-Traffic Alert, plus the Speed Limit Info system – for the first time in a roadster – the BMW Head-Up Display.

Active Park Distance Control and the rear view camera come to the driver’s aid when manoeuvring or parking. These two systems form part of the Parking Assistant, which takes care of steering, acceleration, braking and selecting gears both when parking the car and exiting parking spaces.  The Parking Assistant’s range of functions additionally includes the Reversing Assistant, which makes light work of backing up over distances of up to 50 metres by steering the vehicle along exactly the same path it has just driven along in a forward direction.

Intuitive operation and perfect connectivity: BMW Operating System 7.0.

The display and operating system for the new BMW Z4 has also undergone further improvement. The roadster is available with BMW Operating System 7.0, which stands out with state-of-the-art digital functions geared precisely to the driver’s requirements. BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings consistently designed, context-based and customisable graphics to the fully digital instrument cluster and Control Display, each of which have a screen diagonal of 10.25 inches. To ensure perfectly intuitive and need-based operation, the driver has a choice of using the Control Display’s touchscreen functionality, the iDrive Controller, the buttons on the steering wheel or voice control.

Munich. The BMW M GmbH is extending its range of high performance models in the segment of Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupes (SAC). The high-performance character so typical of BMW automobiles will be passed on to two further BMW X models, the series development of which has already been kicked off.

During the DTM racing weekend at the Nürburgring (7 – 9 September 2018), prototypes of the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M were test driven on the circuit. Thus, the camouflaged pre-series vehicles made their first public appearance precisely where the dynamic driving qualities of the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M will reach their final level of maturity. The Nürburgring is the traditional setting for the completion of the ultimate testing and tuning programme for the specific overall M package comprising drive system, suspension and aerodynamics.

With large air intakes at the front, specific M features for optimised aerodynamics and an exhaust system with four tailpipes integrated into the rear apron, the vehicles already bear the characteristics of a BMW M model at an early stage of their development phase. The technological highlight of the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M is a newly developed straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics.

Part of the development process is the specific tuning of the M xDrive technology introduced for the first time in the new BMW M5. This technology is deployed in the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M to ensure constant supreme and performance-oriented transfer of engine power to all four wheels. The M- specific further development of the intelligent four-wheel drive system guarantees maximum traction and loss-free distribution of drive torque for achieving extremely dynamic handling characteristics. In interaction with the active M rear axle differential, cornering dynamics, agility and precision in the driving behaviour of the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M are lifted to a level unrivalled within the competitive environment.

Munich. Sportiness coupled with a polarising appearance – based on this formula, the new BMW X2 has inspired above all a young and modern target group following its premiere in March 2018. With its extroverted design, the BMW X2 interprets the character of a premium SAC (Sports Activity Coupes) in an entirely new way within the compact segment.

The top-of-the-range version of the BMW X2 is the M Performance automobile.

BMW is now presenting the new top model of the X2 series. The wide BMW double kidney grille of new BMW X2 M35i features a surround in Cerium Grey for visual differentiation at first glance. Likewise, the surrounds of the air cooling inlets and the exterior mirror caps are finished in Cerium Grey. The rear of the X2 M35i is characterised by the standard M rear spoiler and two specially designed exhaust tailpipes, which also come in Cerium Grey.

BMW’s most powerful 2-litre TwinPower Turbo engine.

The new BMW X2 M35i featuring a 225 kW (306 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine definitely sets new benchmarks above the previous versions. As the letter M in the type designation clearly signalises, the new X2 M35i possesses the impressive dynamic handling qualities of an M Performance automobile. Behind this is yet again the BMW M GmbH, whose racing know-how flows into the development of all components. The 2-litre TwinPower Turbo engine concealed under an M Performance cover is the very first M Performance four-cylinder engine and at the same time BMW’s most powerful version. It delivers a fascinating maximum power output of 225 kW (306 hp). Maximum torque is an extremely powerful 450 Newton metres. To ensure that this sheer power is securely transferred to the tarmac, the X2 M35i comes as standard with intelligent four-wheel drive technology xDrive in conjunction with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission including Launch Control. The automatic transmission features specific M Performance tuning. Equipped in this way, the BMW X2 M35i is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The necessary thermal stability of the engine is now ensured by a redesigned cooling system.

Outstanding driving dynamics thanks to M-specific tuning.

Being a typical M Performance automobile, the BMW X2 M35i features, in addition to a powerful engine, also a M Sport suspension system that has been specifically tuned and adapted to match the car’s sporty character. A adaptive suspension offering two different manually adjustable modes and combining maximised sportiness and driving comfort is also optionally available.  A particularly special technical highlight – and also a premiere for an M Performance automobile – is the M Sport Differential installed in the front axle gear. During highly dynamic driving manoeuvres, this locking differential most effectively reduces possible traction losses on the front wheels. In addition, the braking system has been upgraded for use on the X2 M35i. The M Sport braking system with fixed callipers in Dark Blue metallic and 18-inch steel discs at the front (17-inch at the rear) guarantees consistently short braking distances even under the highest loads. With that, however, the M know-how is still far from being exhausted. Steering and suspension have also both been adapted to match the performance of the drive system. For instance, thanks to a special setup, the M sports steering conveys to the driver an impressively direct and precise steering feel. Furthermore, the X2 M35i comes as standard with the M Sport suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setting as well as vehicle lowering. The rear axle construction has been redesigned. A suspension with an adaptive spring and damper combination offering two different manually adjustable modes is also optionally available.

Upgraded exterior design thanks to M Performance typical elements in Cerium Grey.

The sporty aspiration of the X2 M35i, which is the result of its inner qualities, is reflected in an exciting exterior design with numerous typical M Performance Automobile elements finished in Cerium Grey and based on the X2 M Sport Package. This begins at the front with full LED technology for the main headlights and fog lights and continues with the double kidney grille in Cerium Grey and the newly designed side air intakes of the same colour at the front for best possible cooling of brakes and engine. The exterior mirrors have been upgraded by special caps, likewise in Cerium Grey. At the rear, the X2 M35i boasts a distinctive M rear spoiler and demonstrates its fascinating sovereignty with an M Sport exhaust system with two tailpipes (each 100 mm in diameter). Thanks to the adapted silencer system, the exhaust system produces a particularly sporty sound spectrum. 19-inch M Sport light alloy wheels in 715M styling (optional: 20-inch M Sport light alloy wheels in 721M styling and in Cerium Grey bicolour) impressively round off the exterior design features.

For the first time Exclusive M sports seats ensure perfect seating comfort and lateral support.

An exceptionally sporty look also dominates the interior. As with the exterior design, the basis is again the M Sport Package. Moreover, the X2 M35i features as standard an M Sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and door entry trims at the front bearing the lettering “M35i”. The optional M sports seats at the front are a novelty. They offer not only perfect lateral support for both driver and front passenger in sharp bends, but also the highest level of comfort and safety through integrated headrests. On 23 August 2018 (Pacific Daylight Time), the Pebble Beach Golf Links near Monterey, the well-known venue of the Concours d’Elegance being held there a little later, will become the setting for the world premiere of the new BMW Z4. With dynamic proportions, emotional design and fascinating sportiness, the open-top two-seater will take the classic roadster concept into the world of today and tomorrow. In Pebble Beach, the Munich-based premium carmaker will present the exclusive BMW Z4 M40i First Edition (combined fuel consumption: 7.1-7.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 162-168 g/km*). The new BMW 3 Series Sedan: baptism of fire in the "Green Hell".

Along the way to serial production maturity, the seventh generation of the successful BMW sports sedan has undergone driving dynamics testing and set-up on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Munich. The next generation of the BMW 3 Series Limousine is just completing the crucial stages on the way to serial production maturity. There was only one possible setting when it came to driving dynamics testing and set-up runs: the legendary Nordschleife at Nürburgring. Test runs at the "Green Hell" traditionally serve as a baptism of fire for the drive and suspension technology of newly developed BMW models. A particularly extensive testing programme was developed for the camouflaged prototypes of the new BMW 3 Sedan. After all, the comprehensive renewal of the wheel suspension, steering, damping/suspension and brakes provided the developers with a broad range of opportunities to optimise ride comfort and dynamic performance, enabling the ultimate sports sedan for the mid-range premium segment to mature lap by lap.

The underlying concept of the four-door model shows just how much the development process for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is geared towards enhanced sporty flair. The centre of gravity is some 10 millimetres lower than in the predecessor model, axle load distribution is balanced at a harmonious 50 : 50 and the total weight adjusted for fittings is as much as 55 kilograms less.

Meanwhile the rigidity levels of the body structure and suspension attachment – so crucial to the steering set-up and ride acoustics – have been significantly enhanced. The car's agility and steering precision benefit from much expanded track widths, while increased wheel camber levels offer additional potential for maximum transverse dynamics.

In terms of the engine portfolio, one particularly striking feature is a thoroughly revised 4-cylinder petrol engine. It is the most powerful 4-cylinder engine ever to be fitted in a BMW series production model. Yet its fuel consumption figures are still some 5 per cent below those of the predecessor engine: one contributing factor here is the further developed 8-speed Steptronic transmission. What is more, a particulate filter optimises the emissions response of the new engine, enabling it to meet the Euro 6d-TEMP exhaust standard.

Not only is the body lighter and more rigid in design than that of the predecessor model, the same is also true of the front and rear axle in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. The result is a specific orientation of the axle kinematics and elastokinematics towards supreme yet sporty drive properties. The key feature in terms of suspension development in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is its innovative damping system. The first ever lift-related dampers ever to be fitted in a BMW model function continuously and progressively in relation to the respective spring travel. As such, the vibrations that occur when compensating for bumps on the road and during dynamic cornering can be neutralised especially gently and precisely – the perfect basis for striking a unique balance between sporty flair and ride comfort, which is very much a defining characteristic of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan.

Long known for its diversity, the track layout of the Nürburgring Nordschleife quickly transpired as the perfect setting for selective refinement of the interaction between the new damping technology and the other suspension components. "We're using the lift-related dampers as an active set-up element so as to create supreme driving properties in all conditions," explains Peter Langen, Head of Driving Dynamics. "With short spring travel, a sensitive damping response ensures comfortable vibration compensation. When the car passes over large bumps, the body movements are controlled by increased damping forces."

The lift-related dampers are a standard feature of the suspension technology in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. In a specific set-up they also form part of the M sports suspension, which additionally includes a lowering of 10 millimetres, 18- inch light alloy wheels and mixed tyres. This provides a boost to driving dynamics – something that can be experienced more intensely than ever before. The increased damping forces can be felt on the Nordschleife in particular: in the M sports suspension these are some 20 per cent higher than in the standard suspension. "This means the difference from the standard suspension is much more perceptible than before," says Peter Langen. "We've also made the M sports suspension much sportier, with more rigid bearings and stabilisers, harder springs and additional body struts."

In order to further reinforce the car's dynamic characteristics, the new M sports suspension is offered solely in combination with the Variable Sports Steering. In addition to the speed-related steering assistance Servotronic, this also provides a variable steering ratio. Variable Sports Steering has also been specially reconfigured for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. It already responds with much greater precision to slight steering movements, without seeming nervous in central position. The harmonious set-up of the steering system can be felt on long bends as well as when changing direction several times in rapid succession. A linear build-up of steering forces and optimised feedback increase precision when cornering in dynamic style.

The M sports differential is able to perfectly demonstrate its qualities on both the Nordschleife and the Grand Prix circuit. The electronically controlled locking function in the rear axle differential of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan is linked to Dynamic Stability Control DSC, ensuring needs-oriented limitation of rotation speed compensation between the rear wheels on the inside and on the outside of the bend. Depending on the situation on the road therefore, it is possible to pre-emptively influence both understeering and oversteering without brake intervention. The active differential lock distributes drive torque selectively between the rear wheels. In this way, it prevents slip on a wheel with reduced surface grip while ensuring that the engine power can be used unrestrictedly to generate sporty driving pleasure.

"Unlike conventional mechanical locks, the regulated M sports differential can optimise so much more than just traction," says Peter Langen. "In addition to cornering dynamics, there is a particularly tangible increase in drive stability in the event of load changes, for example. This allows the new BMW 3 Series Sedan to be driven remarkably confidently and effortlessly even when travelling in dynamic style."

For sporty driving, the active differential lock provides much higher levels of transverse acceleration as well as a perceptible boost in dynamic performance when accelerating out of bends. It also supports optimised stability, precision and cornering predictability in the new BMW 3 Series Sedan – without brake intervention.

Munich. The BMW Group has introduced computer tomography (CT) into prototype development, production and analysis – a first in the automotive industry. Thanks to this technology, the full range of vehicles, from MINI to Rolls-Royce, can now be quality- controlled even in the early stages of development. Scans are performed by four robots which move around the outside of the prototype to produce several thousand cross- sectional images. These are then used for detailed examinations of innovations, new materials and bonding technologies. Until now, vehicles have had to be dismantled for analysis, but CT allows checks to be carried out with the vehicle completely intact. The new X-ray system is based in the BMW Group Pilot Plant in the Research & Innovation Centre (FIZ) in Munich, at the intersection between Development and Production.

Udo Hänle, head of Production Integration and Pilot Plant: “The use of this state-of-the-art computer tomography system is a major step forward for us as it will help us to improve the quality of our products even further. We can now analyse our prototypes in minute detail without having to dismantle them first. The new system allows us to examine our vehicles in a way that wouldn't be possible with conventional, static computer tomography systems. Ultimately, this will enable us to integrate new technologies into a series vehicles even faster.”

Analysis of internal structures

Michael Koch, head of Material and Process Analysis, adds: “We've been using CT and X- ray scans to check vehicle parts for many years, but this latest system takes quality assurance to an entirely new level. We can now analyse our vehicles right down to micro- metre level.”

This degree of detail is required for a range of reasons, for instance to check welds and punch screw connections, and to verify body condition before and after painting, where extreme temperatures can affect adhesive bonds. Findings from the scan are then used as a basis for making targeted modifications to series production.

The scan itself is performed by four coordinated robots. Once the vehicle is in position in the system, the robots move around it. Working in pairs, they send X-rays through it and across to their counterparts. The data they collect is then put through a specially developed computer program that calculates a multi-layered, three-dimensional image. This forms the basis for a detailed analysis of the internal workings of the vehicle, offering information on objects as small as 100 micro-metres – approximately the width of a human hair.

Engineers are currently carrying out research to establish how far Artificial Intelligence might be used to evaluate findings. By processing large amounts of data, the software can learn the many different patterns that occur, link individual items of data, and gradually evaluate findings automatically.

Two years of development work

BMW Group engineers and the Fraunhofer Development Centre for X-Ray Technology (EZRT) spent two years developing the new system, which is the only one of its kind in the automotive industry.

Philipp Janello, project manager at the BMW Group, explains: “Working with X-ray specialists and plant engineers, we were able to enhance the software of the test system with the help of comprehensive test measurements carried out on the vehicle body.” The result is a customised system that meets the requirements of the BMW Group.

The all-new BMW 8 Series Coupe.

The presentation of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe adds a brand new chapter to the Bavarian premium carmaker’s long history of sensational sports cars – and gets its current model offensive in the luxury segment off to a particularly dynamic start. The BMW 8 Series Coupe is a dream car boasting outstanding performance, emotion-stirring design, state-of-the-art luxury and exceptionally advanced equipment features when it comes to display and control technology, driver assistance and connectivity.

The primary development objective for the BMW 8 Series Coupe was thrilling driving dynamics. The body, powertrain and suspension were consistently honed to achieve the supreme agility, precision and poise expected of a top- class sports car. In the process, remarkably powerful engines were combined with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and BMW EfficientLightweight design measures.

Heading the model range is the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe, which is powered by a newly developed 390 kW/530 hp V8 petrol engine. This BMW M Performance model will be launched in November 2018 together with the BMW 840d xDrive Coupe featuring an extraordinarily potent six- cylinder in-line diesel unit with 235 kW/320 hp.

Exterior design: new design language generates sporting appeal.

The exterior design of the BMW 8 Series Coupe exudes a very modern form of sporting appeal, beautifully blended with an air of exclusiveness and sensual allure. The production model therefore lives up to all the expectations engendered by the BMW Concept 8 Series. Its unique aura is the result of a new styling language focusing on clarity, modernity and emotional engagement. The expressive surface design of the exterior bodyshell emphasises the dynamic character of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe with greater intensity than on any of the brand’s previous models. The expansive surfaces are structured using pared-down, crisp character lines. The car’s low-slung design, an elongated silhouette with a slim window graphic and a roofline flowing elegantly into the rear with distinctive “double-bubble” contouring, a long wheelbase and a wide track are the defining elements of the BMW 8 Series Coupe’s proportions. With exterior dimensions of 4,843 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width, 1,341 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,822 mm, the two-door car adopts an extremely powerful stance on the road.

The sports car’s immense drive power is visualised to stunning effect by the elaborate, jutting design of the front apron, the large air intakes – which assume an even more imposing appearance on the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe and in conjunction with the M Sport package – and the precise contours of the bonnet. The low-down BMW kidney grille is hexagonal in shape, with its elements framed by a single-piece surround. The LED headlights are the slimmest of any BMW model to date. BMW Laserlight with variable road illumination and Selective Beam is optionally available.

Whilst the surfaces curve inwards on the far side of the front wheels, they flare outwards again in powerful fashion in the vicinity of the rear wheels. This combines with the strikingly tapered glasshouse to create a muscular shoulderline. At the rear, the interplay of horizontal and diagonal lines emphasises the car’s width and low centre of gravity. The LED taillights add to this effect by extending deep into the flanks.

Precise details optimise aerodynamics and weight.

An almost fully sealed underbody, active air flap control and Air Curtains including Air Breathers help to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s streamlined body. Narrow exterior mirror bases also help smooth the airflow. On the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe, an additional front spoiler further minimises lift at the front axle at high speeds. The roof of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe takes a leaf from the book of traditional sports car design by featuring a central cutout that recalls the “double-bubble” styling of classic racing cars.

This distinctive contouring also graces the optional carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof, which is available for the first time on a series-production model from the core BMW brand and lowers the car’s centre of gravity even further. The air intake bars, exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler and rear diffuser of the optional Carbon package are likewise all made from CFRP.

Interior: sporty driving experience, relaxed and luxurious ambience.

The modern and minimalistic exterior design language is continued inside the new BMW 8 Series Coupe, creating a relaxingly luxurious ambience. At the same time, all lines point lengthways, automatically directing the gaze to the front and emphasising the focus on sporty driving. All control elements are clearly arranged. A concise surface design lets the high-quality materials really stand out. The use of trim finishers, for instance, is restricted to the sports car- style transition between the centre console and the instrument panel.

The newly developed sports seats are upholstered as standard in Vernasca leather. The full leather trim for the door shoulders and instrument panel is also standard. Thanks to the low seating position of both rear seats, it has been possible to design the head restraints as an integral part of the backrests. The rear backrest can be split 50 : 50 as standard and folded down to increase the capacity of the 420-litre luggage compartment.

The luxurious character of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe can be further enhanced by a number of top-quality optional extras. The range includes the BMW Display Key, telephony with wireless charging, climate seats, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, as well as glass applications for selected controls. Moreover, there is a choice of model- specific options from BMW Individual.

New V8 engine with incredible power delivery and acoustics.

A new V8 power unit is making its debut in the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe. The 4.4-litre engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology serves up an intoxicating blend of prodigious power delivery and an equally impressive soundtrack, which is further enhanced by the flap-controlled sports exhaust system. The turbochargers located within the V-shaped space between the cylinder banks, the direct petrol injection system, the thermal shielding, the cooling circulation system, as well as the ignition and engine electronics are just some of the features that have been extensively redeveloped, along with the crankcase.

Thanks to a 50 kW/68 hp increase in output with no impact on weight compared to the engine it replaces, the new V8 is now able to generate 390 kW/530 hp, which is on tap between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. Maximum torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) is available over a wide rev range from 1,800 to 4,600 rpm for prolonged forward thrust. The new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds.

Efficient straight-six diesel engine with tremendous pulling power.

The new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe provides another highly distinctive take on the sports car genre. The unprecedented use of a diesel engine in this segment produces a delightful mix of supreme pulling power and excellent fuel economy. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology delivers a maximum output of 235 kW/320 hp and peak torque of 680 Nm (501 lb-ft), which is available as low down as 1,750 rpm.

The engine employs multi-stage turbocharging technology and its performance characteristics permit relaxed cruising at low engine speeds, while also enabling the car to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in only 4.9 seconds.

Swift and precise power transfer: eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, BMW xDrive.

The engine transfers power to a new, improved version of the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, whose increased ratio spread, new transmission management and optimised hydraulic control produce sportier gear shifts while also enhancing its efficiency and smoothness. Shift paddles on the steering wheel are included as standard for manual gear selection.

The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system likewise operates more efficiently than ever before. With its rapid, precise and fully variable distribution of torque between the front and rear wheels, it maximises traction and handling stability even in highly dynamic driving situations. At the same time, the rear-biased set-up guarantees the sort of driving experience for which BMW sports cars are renowned.

Chassis: perfect overall package for maximum performance.

The construction principle and tuning of the BMW 8 Series Coupe’s chassis are designed to harness the dynamic potential of its powertrain technology – and make best use of the car’s underlying concept to achieve maximum sports performance. Optimised weight, a low centre of gravity, well-balanced axle load distribution, ideal wheelbase length and a wide track, plus a rigid body structure and favourable aerodynamic properties provide all the right ingredients to this end.

The standard equipment for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe includes the Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. This allows the action of the springs and dampers to be regulated with great precision so that the driver receives no more than the necessary feedback on the road surface. Integral Active Steering is also standard; it reduces the turning circle when manoeuvring, increases agility and makes changing lanes or taking corners at high speeds even more effortless.

BMW M Performance model, M Sport package with specific equipment features.

The standard specification for the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe also includes exceptionally powerful M Sport brakes along with 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with high-performance tyres. This BMW M Performance model is also instantly recognisable by its exclusive exterior appointments in Cerium Grey, an M rear spoiler and illuminated door sills bearing the model name. These are complemented by equipment features that also form part of the M Sport package available for the new BMW 840d xDrive Coupe, including multifunction seats, M leather steering wheel and interior trim strips in a stainless steel mesh design.

Wide choice of advanced driver assistance systems.

Numerous cutting-edge driver assistance systems are available to boost the comfort and safety of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe, in particular. The line-up includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, the Steering and lane control assistant, the Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning systems, the Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision protection and evasion aid, BMW Night Vision, as well as the Crossing traffic warning, Priority warning and Wrong-way warning systems.

Besides steering, the Parking Assistant takes over the job of controlling the accelerator and brakes. The system also comprises the Reversing Assistant, which makes it possible to reverse easily for a distance of up to 80 metres by steering the vehicle back along the exact path it recently drove forwards.

The new BMW Operating System 7.0 display and control concept.

The inclusion of the BMW Operating System 7.0 display and control concept as standard on the new BMW 8 Series Coupe makes sure the driver is supplied with the right information at the right time. Customisable and personalised displays can be called up in both the instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch Control Display. A flat menu structure that has been optimised for touch control permits fast access to all settings and functions. The situation- based content includes visualising lateral acceleration during high-speed cornering. To enable multimodal interaction, the driver has a choice of using the buttons on the steering wheel, the iDrive Controller, the touch display, voice control or BMW gesture control. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional comes as standard and comprises a fully digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch display, in the centre of which a specific section of the navigation map can be shown, for example. Thanks to the consistent design of the graphics, it forms a harmonious display cluster together with the Control Display. The further improved BMW Head-Up Display can also be found on the list of standard equipment and features a larger projection area, new content and optimised graphics.

The BMW Connected personal mobility assistant is available for seamless connectivity between the vehicle and digital devices. The digital services available for use in the new BMW 8 Series Coupe include hazard warnings obtained from interconnectivity with other BMW vehicles, “over-the-air” software upgrading, the integration of Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business, as well as the BMW Digital Key, which allows customers to unlock the vehicle and start the engine using a smartphone.

The all-new BMW X5.

The year of the BMW X model is about to hit another highpoint. Following the market launch of the first BMW X2 and new BMW X4, a new edition of the original BMW X model is now ready for action. The fourth generation of the BMW X5 impresses with its wealth of innovations and represents the most compelling embodiment yet of the familiar Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) blueprint: the ability to venture off road combined with a talent for dynamic driving pleasure on it. Like its predecessors, the BMW X5 will be built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the US. Its worldwide market launch will begin in November 2018.

The new V8 engine in the BMW X5 xDrive50i and a host of chassis systems making their debut in a BMW X model – such as two-axle air suspension, Integral Active Steering and the Off-Road package – enhance the car’s versatility, dynamic ability and comfort levels. The highlights of its significantly expanded suite of driver assistance systems, meanwhile, are the Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant Plus with Reversing Assistant. In addition, the new BMW X5 hosts the unveiling of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional (fitted as standard), which allows the display and control system to be geared even more precisely to individual driver needs. 

New design language exudes robust assurance and authority. 

A wheelbase 42 mm longer than its predecessor’s (now 2,975 millimetres), a 36 mm increase in vehicle length (to 4,922 millimetres), an extra 66 mm of width (now 2,004 millimetres) and a 19 mm increase in height (to 1,745 millimetres) give the new BMW X5 both an imposing appearance and enviable interior space. The latest X5 retains the hallmark proportions of an SAV, but its pared-back design language – clean surfacing and precise lines accentuating the car’s robustness, poise and authority – is new.

The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney grille with single-piece surround. The new BMW X5 comes as standard with LED headlights, while BMW Laserlight with Adaptive LED Headlights can be specified as an option to optimise the high beam function.  The precise character line in the car’s flanks, which rises up at the rear door, is key to the modern appearance of the new X5. It also defines the car’s strikingly powerful shoulders and feeds into the rear lights (likewise LED units), which extend well into the flanks. The three-dimensional design of their glass covers lends the rear lights a sculpted, technical edge. 

Distinctive interior and exterior design features mark out the xLine and M Sport model variants of the new X5. 22-inch light-alloy wheels will be offered (as an option) – a first for a BMW model. And the new BMW X5 will also be available from launch with model-specific options from BMW Individual.

Clear design and exclusive ambience in the interior. 

Inside the new BMW X5, the clear structure of the instrument panel and centre console radiates a feeling of space. The raised seating position, a new design for the instrument cluster and Control Display, and the cutting-edge display and control concept optimise the driver’s ability to maintain control over the vehicle. The front and rear occupants all enjoy ample accommodation amid an exclusive ambience. The carefully selected materials in the interior include the new Vernasca variant for the standard leather upholstery. Other new features designed to maximise well-being on board the BMW X5 include multifunction seats, cooled/heated cupholders, the Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge, Dynamic Interior Light, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, the Rear-seat entertainment Professional system with 10.2-inch touchscreen display and glass applications for selected controls.

Folding down the 40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrest increases boot capacity from 645 litres to a maximum 1,860 litres. A third row of seats for two additional passengers can be ordered as an option. The new BMW X5 also has a two-section tailgate for ease of loading. If the optional Comfort Access is specified, both sections can be opened and closed automatically and hands-free. The optional two-axle air suspension allows the loading sill to be lowered. And the boot cover can now be lowered electrically into the load compartment floor. 

New V8 engine and an M Performance model available from launch. 

The new BMW X5 will be available from launch with a choice of one V8 and three six-cylinder in-line engines. All will team up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission offering optimised efficiency and shift dynamics, and all meet the EU6d-TEMP exhaust standard. The newly developed eight cylinder unit under the bonnet of the BMW X5 xDrive50i delivers maximum output of 340 kW/462 hp and peak torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft). And the new BMW X5 xDrive40i is powered by a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine developing a maximum 250 kW/340 hp and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). 

A quartet of turbochargers allow the six-cylinder in-line diesel engine fitted in the new BMW X5 M50d to produce maximum output of 294 kW/400 hp, while peak torque of 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) means the BMW M Performance model can call on a particularly forceful wave of power. The BMW X5 xDrive30d also comes with a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine, in this case developing 195 kW/265 hp and peak torque of 620 Nm (457 lb-ft).

Optimised power distribution thanks to BMW xDrive and an electronically controlled differential lock at the rear axle. 

The task of maximising traction, agility and directional stability in the new BMW X5 falls to its intelligent all-wheel-drive system.  The latest generation of BMW xDrive is now able to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels even more efficiently as the situation demands. 

The new xDrive system also offers a rear-biased set-up for those occasions when the driver adopts a particularly dynamic style at the wheel. The electronically controlled differential lock for the rear axle (available in conjunction with the M Sport equipment line or the Off-Road package) gives the car’s handling an even sportier edge. By limiting equalisation of the rotational speeds of the inside and outside wheels through corners, it is able to optimise the transfer of power to the road on surfaces offering differing levels of grip. 

New chassis systems enhance off-road performance, sportiness and comfort.

A host of chassis systems make carefully judged strategic optimisations to the off-road performance, sporting prowess and comfort of the new BMW X5. The SAV comes as standard with Dynamic Damper Control, while Adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll stabilisation and Integral Active Steering (making its debut in a BMW X model) enable extremely agile and dynamic driving characteristics. The two-axle air suspension caters to anyone seeking greater ride comfort and also allows the vehicle height to be adjusted by up to 80 millimetres at the touch of a button or using the BMW Display Key. Plus, customers can now order an Off-Road package – another new feature for a BMW X model. Here, a separate button gives drivers the choice of four driving modes, allowing them to activate the ideal settings for the vehicle’s ride height, the xDrive system, the car’s accelerator response and transmission control, and the DSC system’s corrective inputs in preparation for driving on sand, rock, gravel or snow.

More innovations bring automated driving another step closer.

The spread of driver assistance systems available for the new BMW X5 is more extensive than ever. Among their number are Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, the Steering and lane control assistant, Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision protection and evasion aid, Crossing traffic warning, Priority warning and Wrong-way warning. The Parking Assistant now takes over acceleration and braking duties as well as steering. And another new addition is Emergency Stop Assistant, which brings the car safely to a standstill if a medical emergency occurs. 

A further illustration of BMW’s ongoing progress towards automated driving is provided by the Reversing Assistant. This system takes over steering to manoeuvre the vehicle along a path recently negotiated forward. This system makes reversing for a distance of up to 80 metres a particularly comfortable task in the new BMW X5.

New BMW Live Cockpit Professional display and control system fitted as standard.

The new BMW Operating System 7.0 display and control concept – making its debut in this latest generation of the BMW X5 – focuses on optimising attention control. With its clear presentation and structuring, plus customisable and personalised displays, it sets out to provide drivers with the right information at the right time. In its standard application underpinning the BMW Live Cockpit Professional system, it comprises an instrument cluster and a Control Display (both 12.3-inch). These present their information fully digitally and in a consistent design. Multimodal interaction allows the driver to use the steering wheel buttons, iDrive Controller, the touchscreen display, voice control or BMW gesture control, as they prefer. The likewise further developed BMW Head-Up Display offers a larger projection surface (now measuring 7 × 3.5 inches), as well as new display content and optimised graphics.

Munich. Long bonnet, short overhangs, low centre of gravity, soft top: the sporty two-seater doing its laps at the BMW test centre in Miramas in the south of France is instantly recognisable as a purebred roadster. The new BMW Z4 is currently undergoing another particularly important stage of the process towards serial production maturity, in this case involving driving dynamics testing of a heavily disguised prototype. This will provide key insights into the performance properties of the new model, whose genuine roadster characteristics, pure driving pleasure and captivating sporty flair will soon go out on public roads.

Trials at the Autodrome de Miramas are focusing on fine-tuning of all drive and suspension systems – the basis for the sporty driving experience offered by the new BMW Z4. The most intense form of new dynamic roadster performance is embodied by the BMW Z4 M40i. A new, extremely powerful in-line 6-cylinder engine, a lowered sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, a newly developed front axle, M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres, an M sports brake system and an electronically controlled lock in the rear axle differential create an overall package that sees the BMW M Performance model setting a whole new benchmark for driving pleasure in the roadster segment. 

"The vehicle concept of the new BMW Z4 is geared consistently towards agility and driving dynamics," explains Jos van As, Head of Application Suspension. "The high level of body stiffness and the very rigid suspension attachment provide the perfect basis for a set-up that guarantees the performance qualities of a genuine sports car in terms of steering precision as well as longitudinal and transverse acceleration." 

Like the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, the Miramas test centre offers perfect conditions for the new BMW Z4 to demonstrate its driving dynamics potential. Used by BMW to develop and test new models for more than 30 years, the centre comprises a long asphalt oval and a motorway ring road for high-speed tests as well as slalom, serpentine and circular tracks and a number of handling courses and circuits featuring highly diverse types of surface. These are currently being used for detailed analysis and optimisation of the roadster's steering and brake response. For example, the final form of the adaptive M suspension as it interacts with the rear axle limited-slip differential is developed on a circuit that is also used for testing purposes by BMW Motorsport. 

This intense testing process already indicates that the new version of the roadster concept will offer a tangible increase in sporty flair in the new BMW Z4. The new generation will particularly introduce effective enhancements in terms of agile handling, spontaneity and precision when changing direction and accelerating in dynamic style out of bends – without losing out in the comfort disciplines.

With engine output upped to 460 kW/625 hp (an increase of 19 kW/25 hp on the new BMW M5), even sharper response and bespoke chassis tuning, a driving experience with motor racing undertones is guaranteed at all times.  The new BMW M5 Competition succeeds in blending supreme performance and a superbly exclusive aura with the unruffled ease in everyday use for which BMW M models are renowned.

A history of success: Competition symbolises the ultimate in performance and exclusiveness.

The launch of the new BMW M5 Competition also marks the creation of a new product category, as BMW M GmbH will in future be offering the most powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.  This restructuring of the M portfolio has been prompted by the strong popularity of the various model-specific M Competition packages with power upgrade. M Competition packages were first offered for the predecessor to the current BMW M5 and are currently available for the BMW M4 Coupe, BMW M4 Convertible and BMW M3 Sedan. Some 40 per cent of all previous- generation BMW M5 models sold worldwide were equipped with an M Competition package. The line-up’s crowning glory came in the form of the BMW M5 Competition Edition, which was capped at just 200 units and boasted an uprated power output of 441 kW/600 hp along with an ultra- exclusive standard specification.

Engine: more power and performance characteristics all of its own.

The emotion-packed driving experience that defines the new BMW M5 Competition stems from the unique performance characteristics of its engine. The high-revving power unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology developed for the standard BMW M5 has undergone meticulous retuning to optimise torque and power delivery.

The 4.4-litre V8 now generates maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp, available at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque stands at 750 Newton metres (553 lb-ft) and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm (i.e. a 200-rpm wider band than in the standard version of the new BMW M5).  This means the linear power build-up with which M models have become synonymous is sustained for even longer – into a rev band where the engine’s maximum output comes into play. The high-revving concept with its roots on the race track has therefore been harnessed by the V8 unit in the new BMW M5 Competition to generate formidable propulsive force. The modified power delivery results in a faster 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of just 3.3 seconds, while the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark is reached from a standing start in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than in the standard version of the new BMW M5.

Specially designed engine mounts optimise responsiveness and cornering characteristics.

The new BMW M5 Competition features a model-specific engine mounting, which has a noticeable impact on its performance abilities. The engine mounts have modified characteristics and an increased spring rate – from the 580 N/mm of the standard-spec new BMW M5 to 900 N/mm. The drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s structure is clearly perceptible, resulting in even more direct engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The car also turns into corners with noticeably greater directness and precision on account of the mounting’s stiffer characteristics. Last but not least, the more rigid engine mounts enhance the driving experience further still by bringing the V8’s unmistakable aural properties into the cabin to even more arresting effect.

Individually tuned chassis for the ultimate in precision and performance.

Like every BMW M car, the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with chassis technology matched perfectly to the performance characteristics of its engine. The associated modifications ensure precisely controllable handling at all times, even in extremely dynamic driving situations. This is all down to the M-specific kinematic and elastokinematic properties of the high-performance sedan’s double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension.  They result in neutral steering behaviour and a linear build-up of lateral force up to the car’s dynamic limits. An M-specific version of the Variable Damper Control system is likewise fitted, the Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes selectable at the press of a button activating different damper settings.  Meanwhile, the electromechanical M Servotronic steering conveys a sense of supreme accuracy on turn-in, while also delivering clear feedback.

As well as lowering the vehicle by seven millimetres, the model-specific chassis tuning also includes judicious tweaks to the wheel suspension, springs and dampers. The increased camber at the front axle enhances the car’s ability to absorb lateral forces through high-speed corners. Fitting the toe links with ball joints instead of rubber mounts has resulted in even more precise wheel guidance at the rear axle. And the spring rate of the rear anti-roll bar is also firmer, causing the body roll that occurs through high-speed corners to be distributed with a pronounced rear bias.

The front axle of the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with a newly designed mounting for the anti-roll bar. Making the springs at the front and rear axles ten per cent stiffer than on the standard version of the new BMW M5 has produced a firmer ride, which also has a positive impact on steering response. Plus, shorter auxiliary springs reduce fluctuation  in wheel loads, as does the unique tuning of the damper hydraulics.  The athletic character of the new BMW M5 Competition really comes to the fore in the three modes selectable at the touch of a button. This means the direct connection of chassis to driveline can also be clearly felt in Comfort mode. Selecting Sport mode activates the damper settings perfected for testing on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit. And Sport Plus lends itself to ultra-dynamic driving on grand prix tracks.

Serenely controllable handling through corners.

The upshot of all these modifications is enhanced performance capabilities best appreciated on the track. The new BMW M5 Competition exhibits an even higher degree of steering precision in dynamically extreme driving situations. Its serenely controllable cornering abilities, even at the limit, will be keenly appreciated by drivers. Directional stability under high lateral forces and the car’s obedient nature when turning into corners and accelerating out of them have also reached new heights. At the same time, these dynamic gains have only resulted in a relatively modest dilution of ride and suspension comfort.

The outstanding stopping power of the new BMW M5 Competition is provided by low-weight M compound brakes, featuring six-piston fixed callipers and perforated, inner-vented brake discs at the front wheels and single-piston floating callipers with integrated parking brake at the rear.  There is also the option of M carbon-ceramic brakes, distinguished by their even lower weight, extreme thermal stability and excellent resistance to wear.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes exclusive M light-alloy wheels sporting a Y-spoke design in a bi-colour finish. The 20- inch forged wheels are shod with mixed-size tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.

Exclusive and highly expressive design features.

The light-alloy wheels specially developed for the new BMW M5 Competition play a part in its exceptional performance capabilities and also add to the model’s exclusive looks. Other distinctive design features of the Competition include door openers that are painted entirely in body colour and a host of details finished in high-gloss black. On the new BMW M5 Competition, this discreetly sporty black tone is used for the mirror bases and mirror triangles, plus the exterior mirror caps and the mesh of the signature M gills in the front flanks. This colour scheme combines harmoniously with the BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim for the side window surrounds and B-pillar trim.

The kidney grille’s surround brings extra high-gloss black accenting to the front end of the new BMW M5 Competition, and those travelling behind will also be able to pick out the new car by the high-gloss black detailing for the rear bumper covering. This, in turn, forms a colour-coordinated composition with the tailpipes in black chrome. Both the rear spoiler and “M5” boot lid logo – which gains “Competition” lettering – are also finished in high-gloss black.

Moving inside the new BMW M5 Competition, black seat belts with an understated striped pattern in BMW M GmbH colours and floor mats with model-specific piping plus an “M5” logo provide the finishing touches to an interior oozing high-class sports car presence. Another distinctive identifier is the “M Competition” graphic that appears in the instrument cluster to greet the driver as it is starting up.

Munich. In the final stage of the series production development process, the new BMW 8 Series Coupe is exhibiting the entire spectrum of its dynamic handling potential. Current test drives in Wales are fully dedicated to the final coordination of all drive and suspension systems, the key focus being on the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe, a car which embodies the performance characteristics of the new luxury sports car in a particularly intensive manner. A completely redeveloped V8 engine, state-of-the-art intelligent four-wheel drive technology, an active rear axle differential lock, the adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll stabilisation and Integral Active Steering form a perfectly harmonised package for fascinating sportiness and supreme comfort.

The most striking features shared by the engine and suspension include the broad spectrum of their characteristics. The eight-cylinder power unit being featured for the first time in the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe produces precisely the amount of torque and sonorous sound ideally suited for relaxed cruising. On the other hand, in the Sport or Sport+ mode of the driving experience control feature, both power delivery and engine sound alike become noticeably more dynamic. Likewise, the function of the electronically controlled dampers, the stability control system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and the four-wheel drive system are precisely oriented to the selected driving mode. The rear wheel- focused setup of the new BMW xDrive system is perceptible in every driving mode, whilst particularly ambitious drivers benefit from the active differential lock in the rear axle transmission, which provides for maximum traction when accelerating out of bends.

“The thing that always impresses when test driving the new BMW 8 Series Coupe is its adaptability,” says Markus Flasch, BMW 8 Series Project Manager. “Whether a driver expresses his or her wishes with regard to comfort and sportiness using the accelerator pedal or by pressing a button, the vehicle immediately adapts perfectly to each setting.”

A low centre of gravity and high stiffness values for body and suspension form the basis for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe’s highly dynamic handling characteristics. In the case of the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe, both agility and direct steering behaviour are additionally assisted by standard Integral Active Steering and active roll stability. Moreover, the electronically controlled dampers are able to provide for maximum wheel stability at any time, so that contact with the road is guaranteed even on short stretches of uneven surface.

“The new BMW 8 Series Coupe will be available exclusively with mixed tyres. This gave us the possibility when coordinating the suspension control systems to exploit the potential of the wide rear wheels to attain particularly sporty handling characteristics,” comments Jos Van As, head of Suspension Application. “Also, the higher camber values on all wheels and specifically tuned elastokinematics result in the realisation of exceptionally high cornering speeds prior to the intervention of the electronics. So those who wish can drive on the racing track with active DSC, too.”

As the embodiment of both supreme and sporty power delivery, the new V8 power unit also contributes decisively towards the performance characteristics of the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe. Whist having the same weight as the predecessor engine, the new power unit mobilises an output that has been increased by 50 kW/68 hp to 390 kW/530 hp. Maximum torque has increased by 100 Nm to 750 Nm and is available at 1,800 rpm. The eight-cylinder engine delivers its power to an extensively further developed 8-speed Steptronic sport transmission characterised by expanded spread and further shortened shift times.

“The new V8 engine offers exactly the right balance between performance and emotion, which is what also sets the new BMW 8 Series Coupe apart,” says Christian Billig, head of Drive System Integration. “Above all, the eight-cylinder harmonises perfectly with the further developed Steptronic transmission during dynamic acceleration. At the same time, the sound development of the sports exhaust system authentically reflects the car’s power delivery. And thanks to BMW xDrive and active rear axle locking, the engine always transfers power precisely to where it can be best converted into driving dynamics.

With the test drives in Wales, developers are rounding off the exceptionally diverse and intensive programme for the series development of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. Outside the racetrack and cordoned-off proving grounds, prototypes of the new model are also tested on public roads in order to obtain information on customer-relevant characteristics in driving situations that are as close to reality as possible. They form an ideal supplement to the information gathered for instance during winter test drives in Arjeplog in Sweden, on the BMW Group proving ground in Miramas in the South of France, at the testing centre on the Nürburgring Nordschleife or during initial racing circuit deployment.

The BMW 8 Series Coupe will go on sale during the course of 2018. The digit 8 in the model designation refers to the new model’s prominent position within BMW’s product range. As was once the case with BMW Z8 and currently the BMW i8, it stands for highly emotional and exceptionally sporty vehicles. Thus, the BMW 8 Series Coupe will become a crucial component of the luxury segment model initiative laid down by the BMW Group in its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy.

The BMW Group is pushing ahead with its electrification strategy by extending the reach of its all-electric mobility offering to the company’s core brands. The BMW Concept iX3 – presented for the first time at the Auto China 2018 show in Beijing – offers a look ahead to the expansion of the model line-up in this area. The first model from the BMW brand to be driven purely by electric power will be a fully-fledged Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) – and without compromises when it comes to functionality and comfort.

The BMW Concept iX3 underscores the BMW Group’s resolve to further strengthen its leading position in the field of electric mobility. The expansion of the company’s range of vehicles offering locally emission-free mobility is one of the central spheres of activity defined by the Automated, Connected, Electrified and Services (ACES) technological fields, on which the company is driving forward the transformation of the mobility sector as part of its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy.

The expansion of locally emission-free mobility vehicles is one of the key areas of centralized action, alongside with automated driving, high-end connectivity and new digital services, which are driving the company’s transformation of the mobility industry as part of the NUMBER ONE> NEXT strategy. Under the generic term "iNext", and as an enabler for the entire BMW Group, the future-model-kit is now being developed, in which the BMW Concept iX3 is playing a key role.

Among the innovations showcased in the BMW Concept iX3 is the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. A key benefit of this electric drive technology of the future is the grouping together of the electric motor, transmission and power electronics within a new, separate electric drive component. Plus, the fifth-generation electric drive system also includes new and more powerful batteries. This fresh package of technology brings considerable advances in terms of performance characteristics, operating range, weight, packaging space and flexibility – and will be making its debut in the purely electrically-driven SAV.

The unparalleled technological expertise of BMW i has also played a prominent role in the development of the fifth-generation electric drive system, providing further evidence of BMW i as a nerve centre for sustainable mobility. The transfer of the drive system technology originally developed for BMW i cars into vehicles from the BMW Group’s core brands is entering a new dimension here.

Fully electrified vehicles of the core brand will in future bear a BMW i brand logo. This is visible in the concept vehicle both in the side and in the rear. BMW eDrive technology today already is part of the plug-in hybrid drive system employed by the BMW iPerformance models and

MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4. In the BMW Concept iX3, the next, highly integrated development stage of this technology delivers all-electric mobility. The future series-production version of the electrically powered SAV will therefore also benefit from the technological basis underpinning the powertrain of the BMW iNext, due to be presented in 2021.

Flexible architecture enables sustainable mobility.

With the world premiere of the BMW Concept iX3, the BMW Group is opening a new chapter in its electrification strategy. The future will see the company’s flexible, further developed vehicle architectures accommodating all types of front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. This will pave the way for models from all the company’s brands to be equipped with different drive system variants. And that means a pure combustion engine, plug-in hybrid drive system or battery-electric solution can be integrated into any model, as desired.

The launch of the fifth-generation electric drive system technology once again makes integration into different vehicle architectures significantly easier. The individual components of this new BMW eDrive technology stand out with their lower weight, scalability and extremely compact construction.

Added to which, they fit into a flexible modular design structure and can therefore be utilised in a variety of different ways. BMW’s approach to highly integrated electric drive system technology can in future be applied to a large number of different models.

In order to exploit this potential, the vehicle architectures of current and future models from all the company’s brands will allow for the integration of different drive system variants. In this way, the BMW Group will be able to meet the ever increasing need for electrified vehicles with a wealth of different variants tailored to meet specific demand. The BMW X3, on which the concept vehicle is based, is one of the first models whose architecture demonstrates this flexibility. In addition, the BMW Concept iX3 features a specially developed rear axle subframe and specific chassis integration.

Scalable components, flexible production.

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is distinguished by its extremely compact design. The electric motor, transmission and power electronics are now grouped into a single component, making it much easier to integrate them into different vehicle architectures. Plus, their modular construction enables them to be adapted to the performance levels required and the available space. Another notable element is that the electric motor does not need any rare earths, which means the BMW Group is not dependent on their availability.

The modular design approach has also been further optimised in the development of the next-generation high-voltage battery. The experience amassed by BMW i and the company’s established expertise in the areas of cell technology and cell design have been rigorously applied to further enhance the performance, energy content, charging capability and durability of the battery. Moreover, production of battery cell prototypes enables full analysis and understanding of the value creation processes for the cells and prepares potential suppliers for cell production according to specific requirements.

Like the vehicle architectures and eDrive technology of the future, the BMW Group’s international production network is also set up to provide a high level of flexibility – in this case for the production of models with electric drive systems. Indeed, electrified vehicles are already rolling off assembly lines at ten BMW Group locations around the world. The eDrive components for these vehicles are supplied by production facilities in Dingolfing (Germany), Shenyang (China) and Spartanburg in the US. BMW Group Plant Dingolfing plays a leading role here as the network’s centre of expertise for electric drive systems.

The BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture will produce the future series- production version of the BMW Concept iX3 in Shenyang, China.

BMW Concept iX3 with more than 200 kW/270 hp electric motor and a WLTP range of more than 400 kilometres (249 miles).

The BMW Concept iX3 represents another milestone on the road to locally emission-free driving under the BMW Group’s electrification strategy. And so a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) once again blazes a trail for a new and ground-breaking form of BMW’s fabled driving pleasure. The current BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance made its debut in 2015 as the BMW core brand’s first plug-in hybrid model. And the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 presented in 2009 was the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe with a full-hybrid drive system.

The BMW Concept iX3 previews the fusion of the multi-faceted driving pleasure for which BMW X models are renowned and a locally emission-free drive system. The version of the fifth-generation electric motor developed for the SAV generates maximum output of over 200 kW/270 hp. The likewise model-specific high-voltage battery has a net capacity of over 70 kWh, which is enough to give the electric SAV a range of more than 400 kilometres (249 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

Another feature of the high-voltage battery developed for the fifth generation of eDrive technology is its optimised charging capability. The energy storage system has a newly developed Charging Control Unit and is designed to be hooked up to fast-charging stations generating up to 150 kW. The high- voltage battery can be charged in just 30 minutes from one of these stations.

Electric mobility also means a differentiation in design.

In the front, the kidney and the brand emblem show the affiliation with the BMW i brand. The closed double kidney with the blue accentuation continues the BMW i Vision Dynamics brand already featured in the BMW i Vision Dynamics. The closed area within the kidney reduces air resistance, providing aerodynamic benefits.

Identifying features of the BMW Concept iX3 include a closed-off BMW kidney grille with familiar BMW i car graphic, BMW i Blue accents around the kidney, around the brand logo at the front and along the side skirts, and a diffuser element in the same colour integrated in the rear apron. These styling cues provide a striking contrast against the Moonstone Silver matt exterior paint finish. The concept study is also fitted with light-alloy wheels in an aerodynamically optimised design.

Alongside the world premiere of the BMW Concept iX3 and the BMW i Vision Dynamics study also on display in Beijing, the BMW Group is also highlighting the spectrum of design differentiation between the BMW and BMW i brands. The styling of the BMW i Vision Dynamics is characterised by the pioneering design language developed exclusively for BMW i models. The signature looks of BMW i cars will also mark out future models from the brand. This study of a first all-electric model from BMW is clearly defined by the robust and sophisticated all-round character of an SAV, which remains unaffected by the presence of a locally emission-free drive system under the skin. 

The electric drive will be visible through the design elements from the BMW i design language in the exterior design mentioned above.

With the new BMW M2 Competition, BMW M GmbH is setting fresh benchmarks in the compact high-performance sports car segment and adding marked refinement to the character of the BMW M2 Coupé.

New engine with 410 HP.

The centrepiece of the new BMW M2 Competition is its new engine, based on the power unit from the BMW M3 and BMW M4. The double-charged six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers 302 kW/410 HP between 5,250 and 7,000 rpm. The engine’s peak torque of 550 Nm is on tap between 2,350 and 5,200 rpm. The power unit boasts an insatiable appetite for revs for a turbocharged engine and offers exceptionally linear power delivery across a broad rev range. A dual exhaust system with electronic flap control provides the distinctive M sound, while the M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers outstanding efficiency.

The new BMW M2 Competition completes a standard sprint, from a standstill to 100 km/h, in 4.2 seconds with M DCT. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The consumption figures are also noteworthy: with six-speed manual gearbox, the combined fuel consumption is 9,9 – 10,0 l/100 km, the combined CO2 emissions are 225 – 228 g/km. With the optional M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT), these numbers decrease to only 9,2 l/100 km 209 – 210 CO2 emissions g/km combined.

The cleverly designed oil supply system for the engine is taken directly from motorsport, while the cooling system from the BMW M4 with Competition Package is also used with some adjustments. The BMW M2 Competition includes race-ready variants of the oil supply and cooling systems that have been tested by many years’ experience in motor racing. An enlarged BMW kidney and a new front skirt with increased air flow are exterior signs that point to the use of this improved cooling system. The kidney is finished in high-gloss Shadow Line black paint as standard. This is also the case for the side gills on the front wings, and for the redesigned quartet of tailpipes in the twin exhaust system, with two electrically adjustable valves.

The dark M Competition Badge graces the rear end of the car. The design of the new double-arm wing mirrors improves the aerodynamics and they are typically characteristic of the new BMW M2 Competition.

BMW M engineers have also adjusted the driving dynamics of the BMW M2 Competition to take the increased performance into account. The striking CFRP high-precision strut from the BMW M3/M4 is immediately noticeable in the engine compartment. This improves front section rigidity and increases steering precision. The characteristic curves for the electromechanical power steering, the Active M Differential and the Dynamic Steering Control (DSC) system have also been adjusted.

Selector switches to adjust settings.

The BMW M2 is the first model to be equipped with selector switches on the centre console that allow instant control of the characteristics and settings for the engine, steering and Drivelogic functions, if M DCT is available. The various configurations can be combined with one another in whichever way the driver prefers and can be stored for easy access using the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel. The standard range of equipment now includes the red start/stop button, adaptive LED headlights and front Park Distance Control (PDC).

Fascinating new options.

The new, optional M Sport seat is a real highlight in terms of function and form. The bucket-style shape borrows heavily from motorsport and provides drivers with optimum support, while the headrests are integrated into the seat back rest. The backrest also features an illuminated M2 logo at shoulder height. The black leather upholstery boasts design perforations in the seat and backrest, available in blue or orange. The standard sports seats are also available with black leather upholstery, featuring contrast stitching in blue or orange.

The many years of motorsport experience at BMW M GmbH are reflected in the availability of the new M sport brakes, which provide maximum brake performance thanks to larger brake discs (front axle: 400 mm diameter, rear axle: 380 mm diameter) and brake calipers painted grey (front axle: 6-piston fixed caliper, rear axle: 4-piston fixed caliper). The optional 19-inch forged alloy wheels (front axle: 9J x 19, rear axle: 10J x 19) are also available with the new Y-spoke design. A new metallic paint colour is also now exclusively available for the BMW M2 Competition: Hockenheim Silver.

Munich. With an unmistakable design, a cool appearance and sporty urban genes, the new BMW X2 (combined fuel consumption: 6.2-4.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 142–119 g/km) makes a self-assured statement in its category and within the BMW X model family. Now the Sports Activity Coupé goes a step further as it follows an especially distinctive fashionable trend: from now on the spectrum of paint finishes for the BMW X2 is extended to include an additional colouring as part of the range of Original BMW Accessories – the "Digital Camo" wrapping.

This is a full-coverage multi-coloured matt wrapping in digital camouflage look which especially lends further emphasis to the athletic proportions of the BMW X2. The asymmetrical pattern made up of dark, grey and light colour areas deliberate echoes the exterior paint finish Galvanic Gold which caused such a stir at the presentation of the new model. In this colour finish the BMW X2 boldly reflects an extrovert lifestyle; at the same time the wrapping protects the vehicle from damage caused by stone chip.

One particularly effective feature of this striking appearance is the visual integration of the headlights. The classic dual circular elements of the LED daytime driving light and the fog lamps peer out of the camouflage like the eyes of a hunting predator. In combination with wheel arches that give an even more flared impression, this makes for an overall profile that is very powerful. The BMW X2 appears to be ready to pounce at any time.

The limited BMW X2 sneakers developed in collaboration with the shoe manufacturer VOR already provided an opportunity to display individual style. The wrapping now available exclusively for the compact Sports Activity Coupé is perfect all those enterprising enough to strike out on a new path with the BMW X2.

From prototype camouflage to sought-after equipment detail.

The camouflage wrapping intentionally echoes the colouring of the pre-series prototypes. Even before the model's market launch, these prototypes attracted a lot of attention during test runs on public roads and later at the Fashion Week in Milan. The manufacturer and dealerships received increasing numbers of requests for this charismatic vehicle in precisely this colouring. A dedicated community was even established on social media. Now the wrapping "Digital Camo" is available exclusively for the BMW X2 as an Original BMW Accessory, independent of other equipment features.

M Sport and M Sport X details are not affected.

In the equipment lines M Sport and M Sport X, the specific characteristic details are not affected: the wrapping does not cover the high-gloss attachment parts at the front and rear and the details in Frozen Grey. A first model displaying the new powerful appearance was presented to the public on 17 March at the launch of the BMW X2 held at the BMW sales subsidiary in Fröttmaning, Munich.
