I drive a e46 330i. The car is great but I wanted it to sound a bit louder. I decided to purchase a smaller / straight through muffler and had it welded on. It sounds great on the outside and would often pop and crackle when slowing down however it is literally impossible to daily drive as between 2k to 2.8k rpm it drones really badly inside the car and I can barely hear myself.

Is there any suggestions of what I should do to to make my car sound similar / louder than stock but heavily cut down on the drone? I went to the muffler shop and they said there was not much room to put on another resonator or muffler. They suggested to my to put the OEM muffler back on and replace the cats with either a straight through pipe or resonator (probably should take out the cats since i've got 230k kms)

Note: I'm not really a big fan of the "raspy" sound, wanting more of a deeper sound. Also - not wanting to break the bank with a full exhaust system.

Hi all, I'm changing the rocker cover gaskets on my e38 740i and need to get the rocker covers cleaned properly and powder coated... Has anyone had this done recently? It's an m62tu so apparently is a magnesium alloy that needs the oil baked out of it first. The original paint is completely cracked and peeled off everywhere... It's a mess!

	Appreciate any recommendations. Cheers, Justin.

	Hi Team,

I have bought a E30 Carbrio as a project about 3 weeks ago.

The previous owner cut the front tow hooks to fit a bumper in the past and from my understanding this difficult to wof.

I have got a quote for $595 + GST to weld on some new ones.

My question is what would be a more cost effective way to get around this to pass wof?

	Would appreciate any input.

	Cheers.

I’m looking to repair my e28, which is currently a bit rusty... There’s a fair bit of welding to do, including patching panels, repairing the front subframe, presumably filling holes and no doubt other misc jobs.

I’ve been told tig by some people as there’s less distortion, but mig by others as it’s faster and easier (and cheaper?). Personally tig appeals, but more so for making parts rather than patching panels.

I believe in order to get the most use out of the welder whilst still being able to weld thin sheet metal, I need to get a mig with a maximum minimum of 30 amps and a minimum maximum of 180 amps.

Must be single phase 15 amps (or lower, though can’t see a decent welder being lower than that).

I’ll be needing to purchase all of the associated paraphernalia to go with it.

I personally don’t know how to weld yet, but know several people who can mig and a few who can tig that are happy to teach/help out.

Not looking to spend $5k either...

	Hi

There is an old M54B25 sitting in my shed and winter boredom has got the better of me. Going to pull the engine apart and put it back together a couple of times as a self learning task. Would like to learn the correct way of doing things and tolerances/clearances etc. Depending on what I find (and my skill) it may never run again.

Have a couple of workshop manuals that cover the basics but looking for more in-depth books. What are your favorite engine rebuild books for BMW engines.

	Hi Team,

I know this has been discussed in another thread by me but as time has progressed and turbo setup has changed i had to make some extra space and wanted to see if people think this will pass or if i am better just making a new one

Orginal: e28 Mount attached to block via 6mm plate (wasn't space friendly)

Current: M5 Mount + 10MM Steel Plate attached to e32 block ( i have put threads in the plate so it threads all way through)

Or Do i use the spare 10mm steel i have and just create one (welded or just heat up plate and bend then tread) basically be reserve of M5 mount

	Hi e28 fanatics

So I am attempting to remove the 325psi crank nut to replace the timing chain and guides etc on an M30. Engine is on a stand so yeah, great fun. I have locked the flywheel up with a chain and given the breaker bar + longest tube sitting around the garage a go but it is not moving at all. So I turned to google for options (Last time I removed one I could not remember it being this difficult) and what I found was that BMW made a special crank holder tool, which doesn't look to hard to replicate. Has anyone had a go at making this or a similar tool for the job? I am going to give it a try, would anyone be interested in the cad files after I have completed it? Would look to have it water or plasma cut.

	Hey Everyone,

As some people know i have started doing an e28 turbo project (running gt42), i have run into some serious problem with space on exhaust manifold side due to size of turbo

	1. Engine mount gets in way of manifold i had designed (turbo was going to be side mounted on right hand side in battery box area otherwise hits the hood if top mounted)

Anyway this is a question about modifying the chassis to make it all fit easier or i have to do some serious thinking on how to do it.

Question: Pic 1 - Would i get away with cutting this out and re-boxing (which would give a lot of extra space and figure if done right would be just as strong) or is this to much in the way of modifications that it would have to be re-certified or done by a professional (which i don't have cash to do)

Any ideas are welcome but the e28 chassis has no space compared to other models

I've got an e30. Swapped the auto out for a manual and have run into issues with the electrics. So I am looking at other alternatives now. A whole new engine and box being an option.

Thanks

I'm a disables driver and looking at putting hand controls into an E38. Does anyone have any experience of this. Would like to make it as tidy as possible and was wondering if it's possible to make a manual controller that operates a cruise control servo for the accelerator. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

So don't know if this is the right place so just let me know.

I was just wundering if anyone has tried changing the angle thier engine sits on.

Example. I have an e28 shell with the m30b35 engine out of e32, i am wanting to turbo the car and know the space is limited on exhaust side due to power steering ( need to do more research but only have internet few hrs a week, so i believe you can change power steering pump for more space).

In Looking yesterday i noticed the intake side of the engine has ample space, as i need to adjust engine mounts anyway as wont pass cert. Could i adjust the angle of the engine to give me more space on exhaust side eg. put another 10 degress to the right (looking from front to rear of car) so it was sitting more stright so head etc is more aligned to center of car??

Also any advise on manfolds as i was thinking of doing custom exhaust + intake for the car for further space and looks.

Any advise or a point in right direction in forum ( as i said my internet is limited at the moment, so trying to get a job comes first)

Thanks

I'm after some discussion regarding the easiest way of going about this. I was thinking of getting some stainless headers from ebay but might not have access to a TIG or stainless welding machinery so wanted to get something that would be right for the E30 off the bat.

I know the steering knuckles and everything might make it a little awkward to fob up an exhaust in that area. Can anyone recommend a set of headers that don't need much fabrication?

Also is there a recommendation for a muffler probably Remus flavored that give the m5X 6 cylinder a nice throaty deep tone but not overly boy racerish loud? Ive been checking videos out but there seems to be so many options you never know which price point you're getting into or how readily available they are here.

Thanks

Hey all,

Is this really the first post in this sub forum? Cool!

I have an e36 318is that I'm turning into a 2kcup racer. I've removed the sunroof unit (which was an aftermarket jobby installed in Auckland, not factory) and now have a sunroof sized and shaped hole in the roof!

Because it was aftermarket, there's no bracing of any kind left so the sheet metal is unsupported and very flappy (driving at 80kph+ is a noisy experience!)

I'm wondering:

- What would the best way of covering it up (i.e. a large patch over the top vs an insert inside the hole sealed around the perimeter vs something else?)

- Does anyone know a good fabricator I could take it to?

Because what's left of the roof is a bit flappy, I wonder if it would need to be stretched or tensioned as part of the process...

Any thoughts or recommendations welcome. :-)

James
