Hi all, I have'nt been on here for a very long time, mainly due to the fact I have'nt owned a BMW for a while.... However as some of you might remember I have long wanted a E36 M3. so Finally I have got one. It does require some work but cosmetic only! Mechanicallly (touch wood) it seems good for the klms. it has 230klms!!! but with a mortgage and now a baby... I could'nt afford a low mileage one, I usually don't like anything over 150klms so I took a gamble especially after it just having a ppi done @ a local bmw mechanics then when I got home the radiator decided to split! (thanks to Ray its now fixed) but its NZ new & will give me something to tinker with when I get the time! cheers Chris.

So when the shitty cooling system fails it only takes the head with it.

Try and get one with a flamethrower. Also yes, SA variants got Iron blocks option code 961.

Back from the panel beaters with rust fixed. Graeme Hughes Panelbeaters on the North Shore. Highly recommend them! Fingers crossed putting it all together this weekend goes without drama and maybe, just maybe it'll be on the road on Monday. Need some better lighting in the garage.

The airbag recall is far from over, and I can't see any news about it in NZ, what's going on? The Takata airbag manufacturer have screwed it up pretty royally and if we look at the criteria of the US recall it is as following.. April 10, 2015 2000-2005 sedans built from June 1999 to August 2005 2000-2006 coupes built from June 1999 to August 2006 2000-2006 convertibles built from December 1999 to August 2006 2000-2005 wagons built from January 2000 to August 2005 2001-2006 M3 coupes built from February 2001 to May 2006 2001-2006 M3 convertibles built from March 2001 to August 2006 May 28, 2015 2002-2003 5 Series sedan (including the M5) and wagon 2003-2004 X5 SUV, but only models with the optional sport steering wheel are affected Jan 22, 2016 2008-2013 1 Series coupe and convertible 2006-2011 3 Series sedan 2006-2012 3 Series wagon 2007-2013 3 Series coupe and convertible SUVs 2013-2015 X1 2007-2010 X3 2007-2013 X5 2008-2014 X6 June 2, 2016, 2007-2011 BMW X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, xDrive50i and X5M 2009-2011 BMW X5 xDrive35d 2008-2011 BMW X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6M 2010-2011 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid And if we look at NZ's BMW recall list regarding Takata airbags.. E46 3 Series 1999-2005 Does anyone know whether we can check which airbags we have and perhaps disabling it? or replacing it with parts obtained else where.. any indie garages willing to do this? As it stands, having this airbag is WORSE than having no airbags in a crash. If you have time I'd beg you to read over the bloomberg article fully and I am not sure what else I can do except to raise some awareness on this safety issue.

PPI was done in May. PPI only got half way through before it was aborted because of so many faults (clutch, abs, timing chain, vanos, all four rotors, radiator etc). Did the seller disclose these faults (especially as some are safety related), or get them repaired? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

So the best 4 door American car in 2016 is a Holden, sounds about right!

Had mine done at CJ in Hamilton a couple of years ago. They charged nothing, valeted the car, replaced the slightly tatty number plate surrounds, and gave the car a many-point check. Give a main dealer a call and tell them you want your car sorted.

Yes they are replaced and it costs you nothing if your vehicle falls in the time period. Their was another thread on here about it with quite a bit of info due to the numbers involved only so many vehicles could be done at one time. Last year I Inquired with the local dealer and they would not comment on it but some three months later got a letter to say could I organize a time for my vehicle to have it replaced.

Thanks for the offer @Michael. but I have fixed the issue. --- So I have fixed it. This is what I did: 1. Turn off the car. 2. Remove fuse 10, 34, 43 3. Start car again. 4. Turn it off again. 5. Put in all the fuses, turn on again and it worked. So what I think happened was that the battery got to low causing the gauge cluster to glitch up. When I charged the battery back up it initially didn't make a difference as the gauge cluster was still glitched. Removing those fuses and putting them back in basically restarted the gauge cluster and got it working again. And yes the battery is f**ed it was losing 0.01v every couple of seconds so I have now replaced it with another battery. Thanks guys for helping out!

Orange wheels usually suggest a questionable owner, thus you must question whether or not they had the best intentions for the car I'd hesitate to buy it

Thanks for the info, and sorry for the threadjacking. Hopefully you find one.

Apparently not, S/A built versions also recieved the same variant, stick a magnet on a S/A M52 from an E36 and it will confirm the theory, i done a some research and also a guy i know confirmed this when he dismantled one, i checked the options and "961 special engine code" came up, which i believe it this to be that, will find it out for myself though if i get the opportunity to aqcuire one.

Okay so here we go the long awaited write up! After facing teething issues, shes all running mint! So far since the swap was completed I have picked up some ACS Type 1's however they are very wide and have massive offset. To get the to fit the guards will need a lot of pumping, however I have thought of the possibility of grafting E46 flares onto my rear guards to allow for better fitment. I have managed to get it running reliably and have so far done just over 1000km on the swap and a track day! Around Ruapuna even with the 4.44 diff, I topped out 5th gear around 175kph on gps (7k rpm). I was sitting consistently around low 1:55's which is a good 5 seconds faster than what I was getting on the old engine and auto box. Tires are definitely needing an upgrade along with putting the vented front breaks in to really help the lap times drop down, along with a longer ratio diff. Lowering springs have also been added to the back end which allows for the car to now not look like its doing a nose dive all the time, and gives some insane wheel tuck in the corners (see pic ). Still on the list of things to do: Longer ratio diff New front brakes to be installed Ti Specific shift boot (Sedan one doesn't fit perfectly) Guards to be rolled/flared out Some things that I have considered as future mods include: M-Sport Rear bumper M3 style or AC front bumper ZF gearbox Race/Performance brake pads Front strut brace Upgraded rear sway bar Upgraded sway bar bushings Coil Over suspension Semi Slicks for track use Oil cooler Supercharger when I want more power As always here are some pics!!! As she currently sits: Getting some wheel tuck on ruapuna!!!! More Ruapuna action: Test fitting the new rims: That fitment.... 17/235/45's on 17x8.5 et13 rims.... definatly needing narrower tires for the front to get anywhere close. Also here is a video of a few laps on Ruapuna, this was my 2nd ever track day and first track day since the swap:

Taking weight out of the back increases oversteer, not understeer. Not that a lightweight battery would make a noticeable difference in a 1,550kg road car anyway. Thanks everyone for your input and advice. The M3 is going to Jerry Clayton tomorrow for Inspection II. I had the PPI done only 4,000km ago so there shouldn't be too many surprises. Will report back with how it all goes.

I would say that if you wanted it done properly by a specialist you would have to pay that person what he or she is asking.... or get it done on the cheap and not get the result further down the track. It gets back to the old saying...you get what you pay for.
