Thought I'd give this an update. Spoke to the Auckland City BMW this morning who had run a scan and diagnosed 2 coils busted and recommended I get all 6 replaced and the spark plugs as well as they were shot. They quoted me an exorbitant amount as we can all imagine. Said that they have tried a million times and never been successful in getting all replaced under insurance - only the two would get done. I said I'd think about it. Got in touch with the insurance. They said definitely wont be covering all 6 and the spark plugs. Said if another coil went within a short time they might waive the premium. Called the dealer I bought the car from. He said to call ACBMW to put it out on the road, he would get it towed to his mechanic, replace the two broken coils and all spark plugs for nothing. Should be ready tomorrow or Wednesday. Not a bad result I reckon. Will replace the coils and spark plugs myself in due course to make sure there's quality parts in there however. Only disappointing thing was having to pay ACBMW $155 (discounted a massive 12% from $177) for the scan and diagnosis... And when I asked for the results of the scan to be sent to me, they said they don't give them out. Shocker.

You don't see many in that colour! I wonder if in 20 years time I will be a weird old dude like my father in law, who gets all excited whenever he sees a Mk1 Capri driving about, and I'll be getting all misty eyed about E39s... "Oh yes they had cassette players in all models without the TV screen right up to the end of production, even tho everyone ditched their mixtrack tapes 10 years before then" Kids "WTF Dad you are such a nerd, who even cares about these old cars"

Forged staggered variety 17x8 17x9 ET20 ET22 Wheel covers, caps and paint are original and still quite tidy. Curbing machined and lips polished. Have replaced BMW center logos and cover bolts(stainless hex type) with new items If i had a suitable car these would be on it right now, the problem is im unsure when\if i will get the said car. I may regret it but just seeing if there is any interest before i look into storing them away for the future Have 235 and 245 tyres with good tread that can go on but they aren't worthy imo to fitted. Better photos can be taken for serious buyers if needed $2000

Out of interest - what did they quote for the coils? Also surely as the owner, you are entitled to the scan result that you have just paid for. Just looked up ign coils from one of our suppliers - Genuine Bosch at $65 each. Bosch, Bremi, Delphi are all suppliers to BMW as OEM. Just with no BMW logo or box,

Local Mercedes dealer here charged me $230 for a scan but least i got a free wash\wax and a print out(made sure of that). Cost me $600 to buy a clone Benz system which is identical to the dealers. No reason not to get something like this for a BMW, luckily its quite cheap - https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-GT1-OBD-Diagnostic-interface-K-DCAN-using-BMW-DIS-v57-SSS-v32/322040849998?epid=1988639544&hash=item4afb21664e:g:zOkAAMXQxzZRfgfs&vxp=mtr You could also get some thing more basic like BMW scanner 1.4.0 which is cheaper\fastest but less indepth. May suit you fine. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Auto-Scanner-V1-4-0-for-BMW-E38-E39-E46-E53-E83-E85-Unlock-Version-Diagnos-New-B/263366565931?hash=item3d51dee02b:g:4FoAAOSwk-1aJk3L

The video module (TV) OR the Nav unit controls screen graphics. If there is no Nav unit - it requires the video module for graphics. If there is both - the Nav unit overides the vm. It requires one or other or both. Has it still got the Jap radio tuner? If it has been changed for a Euro version, this will corrupt the Jap Nav unit for graphics. Otherwise possibly a faulty Jap Nav unit. It does not require a disc for it to control graphics.

Did you test voltage with the car running? It's not clear. Alternator test: start car and use positive terminal & good ground with a multimeter and you should get 14+ volts. Anything less and your alternator is on the way out. If the above passes only then move on to parasitic loss tests: not sure what you know already but you really want to use an auto-ranging multimeter (or know how to use a manual one properly), only ever use the ground side of the battery, not the hot side (i.e put your multimeter between the battery and black cable, not the red one), make sure nothing is in an accessory socket and all doors are closed (ideally the trunk will be closed too if you can access the battery from the rear seat), establish what the draw is then start pulling fuses until it drops off. Remember you'll always have some residual draw (antitheft, ECU's, clocks, radios etc) but that should only be ~30 or 40 mA. Do NOT try and start the car, turn on the wipers or headlights or anything with an amperage that exceeds that of the fuse in you multimetre or you'll fry things and start fires. Good luck - if a good battery is draining in four nights then you'll find the draw easily enough, it's massive.

Mine (M5) even has cassette player with TV screen... Yes a great colour that's for sure....original plates too... Hmmmm....

If the alternator isn't charging, the battery light on the dash should be coming on, more likely to be a parasitic drain issue.

So a little disappointed after the weekend at the drags. Best I could manage was a 14.007 sec pass. Was a warm sunny day, where as last time was overcast and cold. Will have to try some different start techniques and try again.

change the plugs too, as worn plugs will load up the coils

Whilst I do agree with this, in my experience the dealers are bloody hopeless. They just reset codes or replace things with the lowest cost, lowest quality parts. if you plan on keeping the car for a while you might want to bite the bullet on some quality replacements.

A "quick look" isn't a proper diag so your options won't become clear until that happens. Did they plug it in or just stand there, look at it and go umm, err? Or were you drinking free coffee when they checked it out? If it's a coil or plug or some other (eventual) consumable then the dealer's not liable unless they knew about it or should have known about it BUT, it's worth giving them a call, they may be willing to work with you and you won't know unless you ask. Insurance, unless they're mugs. won't replace all the coils if only one is bad unless BMW insist they're all done together (and that's a conversation between BMW and Provident, don't get in the middle of it). BMW are unlikely to insist they're all done together. But in the end if they're not all bad you don't need them all replaced. If more go bad you've still got nearly 3 years of coverage remaining. I'd: * Check that Provident will pay for a proper diag - BMW won't do this for less than $100 and a free "quick look" is worthless tbh,. * Once you have the proper diag see how much insurance will cover. * If there's a gap between what you want done and insurance will cover then give the original dealer a call and see what you can negotiate Keep in mind that replacing a coil (either yourself or at an independant) may actually cost less than your excess.

Keen to see what it's like - I've just softened the front suspension again - even 13/33 clicks is too hard compared to the rear..! Definitely room to move on the front end if the back stiffens considerable - I'm looking forward.

The stupidest part of all of this, is the NZ vendors pushing for removing the $400 import limit so GST is charged on everything, as if 15% additional cost will make any difference, if the price difference is 15% -20% most people will buy locally for immediacy already.

So I finally finished restoring my E46 330ci to its former glory with a respray to most of the car, body work, cut polish. Ended up getting some rims for it too, really adding to the final touch. These things age really well with time! ----- When i begun - it needed some serious love Finished with the respray - but the old wheels - just didnt give it the BMW look And here it is now

The live searches are terrible. And the expired listings searches are all-but non-existent. Absolute rubbish. Nothing some more search filtering, or filtering of search results wouldn't cure. And the results... Search for something valued up to (say) $5k, and get results for things starting at $17k. Kinda defeats the object. Filtering older car searches by year is terrible too, with 10-year brackets to select. Looking for something between 1985 and 1995 means you have to trawl through everything from 1980 to 2000. Assuming the seller has been bothered to advertise something correctly... Right. That's enough for today. Sunday morning, the sun is shining. Wife and daughter are out for a while. I'll get something useful done, then perhaps we'll pop out and enjoy the sun for a while.
