So a massive thanks to @BM WORLD and @Eagle for their advice. Switched over the plug from the 525i, popped the cluster in and hooked the battery up. Gave it 5 minutes to check for smoke (none), turned the key and it fired straight up! So just got to swap the coding plug over, swap the fuel gauge over and put the interior back together. Couple of minor light failures coming up on the dash that will be easy to fix. She'll be off for a wof hopefully mid next week so I may actually get to cruise in it Christmas Day! Will put up a pic later, on closer inspection the PCB on the original cluster is toast..... funny how something so small electrically can stop a car running ? but I'm happy now, it's fixed and running!

10 December 2018. 171765kms (19,571 since acquisition) Service. Keeping up with the requirements of the MBI. And sensible maintenance/care. 1. Oil & Filter. Also replaced filter housing (OEM Hengst), as the filter drain plug was seized. (there are two drain plugs on the N62. One in the oil pan, one in the centre of the filter housing). Fuchs GT1 Proflex 5W30 8 litres, Hengst E203H. 2. Cooling system flush and fill. This annual coolant replacement (twice factory frequency) is my 'belt and braces' approach to risk mitigation of the valley coolant pipe issue with N62. Genuine BMW coolant used. 3. Service checks. The usual belts, plugs, hoses, suspension, brakes, air filter, steering etc etc for annual service. Though to be fair, pretty much everything's been replaced in the last 2 years, so we'd have been surprised to find any issues. "It's driving like they did when these first came out". I'm loving it.

I wondered about that and concluded (perhaps incorrectly) that "undersized" meant "the wrong size" rather than simply "worn" which would be a less ambiguous way of stating it. On the basis that it's the width/thickness then yes, of course that should be check for any WoF. Edit: if I got failed on missing bump stops I'd cut up a pool noodle, wrap that around the strut and ask them to prove they didn't work.

I bought it in 2004 after it had been in storage for 2.5 years. Daily drove it until 2013, sold it cheap to my dad on the proviso he looked after it. Had new paint, needs a few things attended to, (like the diff that I sourced earlier this year), but is still a joy to drive. I condition the leather in my cars every 6 months, must have forgotten to tell dad and today was the first for a long time, but it came up well. Just starting to get a tiny crack in the dash, anyone have any ideas on if you can stop it?

Your link doesn't seem to be working, is it this one? 2015 Ex-UK Import.. https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-1867211445.htm?rsqid=b3638725188046658a5e88e59ab464f9 3 crap photos and an advert full of rhetoric. No it's not the only one in NZ. Rare, yes but not the only one. And as for not making manual M3s for long... so (at least) 7 years isn't a long time then..

Arbitrary, yes. Bump stops, I have removed completely perished ones from the front and rear of my old E36 sedan and nothing was said, so it completely comes down to the inspector at the time and whether they notice (and yes that was an inspection at VTNZ of all places). Most OEM rotors have a minimum thickness stamped on them on the inside. If for some reason the inspector thinks they are under this minimum thickness, they can fail them on it. Rotor thickness is however a valid metric, once it gets too thin there are a few potential issues. Heat dissipation and overheating are a major concern with heavy braking, and there's always the slim chance (I say slim because I've never seen it happen but the potential apparently is there) that the pistons will come too far out of the calipers, causing major failure. I agree completely that it is subjective, having spent time in Melbourne as a motor mechanic we couldn't fail brakes on visual inspections for anything other than fluid leaks, cracked hoses or worn pads/shoes. The system over there relies on wheels being removed and discs being measured, brake drums removed and linings inspected etc. Not just a quick glance and "hey that looks a bit thin, think I'll fail that", actual hard data. Unfortunately though, most WOF inspectors over here will stick to the whole "it's a visual inspection only" guideline that is the basis of the WOF system, and not go the extra yard to provide hard evidence that there is something wrong. And then you get the d**k mechanics who tell you you have to replace the rotors, you aren't allowed to get them machined if they are within tolerance, all because they wrote down they must be replaced ? - had that argument many years ago.

I'll bid $10 going by the information and the photos you've supplied... I hope I'm not the leading bid though

Yes indeed! BMW Car Club NZ has a range of member benefits negotiated with supporter businesses, accessed by production of a current membership card. The saving from membership discount on 3 years of MBI far exceeds the annual membership fee. I recently accessed club discount when purchasing a new radiator through a local supplier. In addition to the quarterly magazine, camaraderie, social events, trips/cruises, and MANZ affiliation, the discounts seal the deal; it's great value! ? /plug.

Cheers @Eagle! I bought this sight unseen and was pleasantly surprised by the overall cosmetic condition - and yes, the aftermarket stereo runs the interior aesthetic imo. What does it ride like? Driven about 1,000kms so far and I've been quite impressed the way this actually drives. Although its won't break any land speed records it rides quite smooth. It is not as tight as the 525i Msport I had a while ago but I was after practicality. I'm calling it my grandpa wagon - in both looks and 'driveability' haha. E39's are 'cheap as chips' now so yeah, I think its a good deal for a touring.

The bar through the middle, horizontally is a Harness bar for mounting a race harness shoulder straps on. i believe the consensus is not to use normal seat belts with a 1/2 cage on the track. having the bar close to the back of the seat helps to reduce the belt stretch, which can happen when they are fixed to the rear seat belt mounts.

Wrapped (mostly, ran out!) Painted again, baked and installed, car is quieter now due to 3 less leaks in the exhaust, but on hard left hand corners there is a very slight vibration in the steering, number 3 primary is just touching the steering shaft briefly as the motor moves. I will fix it properly one day, in the mean time I will only turn right
