My concern is a repeat of what I encountered where a cracked (visible crack, light shines through like...) valve cover was missed, but I got a note that my steering wheel was the wrong kind for my car. (It isn't, Msport wheel, just not the round kind PFL) Maybe I am being unfair. I knew a lot less about cars then, specially about this specific car... In addition to the missed valve cover, I was advised the car was in reasonable condition for its age, and it wouldn't be quite as bad as it seemed (this has not panned out...). Also, given I was a complete newbie, I felt there was a lack of explanation as to what the items in the list were. I was under the impression I was paying for expertise and for a report which would make sense to me, I got a report that would make sense to me today, and didn't serve me very well then. Does this make sense?

This popped up on TardMe this morning, an interesting car for a number of reasons. https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/specialist-cars/competition-cars/auction-1949717473.htm?rsqid=d1a6bd60f8324d598e6f1128b2853999 Why someone would take a Ceccotto edition and turn it into a race car is beyond me, must have been done before the prices started to sky rocket. Too far gone (and too hard to get the limited edition parts) to turn it back into a road car which is where the real value would be. As a race car the details are a bit sparse, no photos of the engine, or brakes / suspension set up and hardly a mention in the listing. Unless it has some real nice trick bits in it, then the price is probably a bit over inflated. Nice job of the JPS livery, just a shame they have covered over the limited edition blue paint work on the outside...

wrong way to look at it. right way to look at it. waterpump and tstat is not expensive if you order the part overseas and either you can DIY or get it fitted at an indy for not a lot of money for peace of mind. dont expect these things to be done, the general car owner in NZ is sub standard and we are the rare breed who actually care and think about preventative maintenance.

So after visiting Winger BMW and being told that my car wasn't sold in NZ, and that only 30 130i models were sold new here, I got curious and wanted to know how many 3 door(E81) 130i there are in NZ. And the answer is Two ? Tag along to find out how I found this out: The service guy at Winger suggested I ask NZTA about numbers, so I was on their site today for an unrelated matter and remembered about my query. So I clicked on the motor vehicle registry and the NZTA provide an open database of every vehicle registered in NZ! https://opendata-nzta.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/motor-vehicle-register Clicking on the data tab at the top you can filter by the various column headings and search them, so I started off with BMW as the Make column and 130i as the Model column, which gives 587 entries for a 130i in NZ. I then used realoem.com to select various productions months of the E81 model to find out the 4th-7th digits of the vin code(I also did this with the 5 door E87 to confirm the codes in the database). Adding that code onto the first 3 numbers of the vin from this sheet, and then entering it into the CHASSIS7 column(or VIN11) search, results in the two E81 130i registered in NZ. Now this is only as good as the info that has been put in, ie how the registration form has been filled in. Should work for every car, enjoy

With the B58 having been out for a couple of years now in the M140i, M240i, M340i and a couple of others, there are some really interesting tweaks starting to come out of the woodwork. The base engine is rated 250kw / 335hp, with 500Nm of torque, figures which are somewhat underrated as the car normally dyno's about 365hp and appx 516Nm torque. It's quite apparent that BMW have built this engine to be a platform from which to develop some pretty incredible performance options out there. With only some relatively minor tweaks you can get some pretty mental output figures on completely stock internals. For example, here is a 2017 M140i with some improvement to the exhaust system, intake filters, and the addition of one of the newer Burger JB4 on-the-fly remappers, admittedly on the highest setting that won't require an upgraded fuel injection system or water/meth injection. That's 430hp and an astronomical 685Nm of torque... from an engine in a hatchback that you would barely look twice at when you saw someone loading groceries into it at the supermarket! Gonna be bloody interesting what happens with this engine in coming years, especially ones the tuning-happy scene that the Supra will attract start getting their hands on it.

25k is very reasonable for nz new and 170kms. is it PFL? i would imagine that would be a pretty easy sell

Owner of the ex write off Le Mans blue one has told me it sold to someone in the Far North. There is an oxford green one with black interior up for grabs that I know of. NZ New, done 170k I think asking 25k. Can get details if needed.

General rule - Unless an old BMW its been owned by a true enthusiast (typically one that can do work themselves) its going have lots of issues present.

Also if you put it back together without the clock spring and steering rack both centered. the next time you turn full lock it will ruin your clock spring!
  15. 1 point
If you have the rack out and spin the steering wheel past its normal 2-3 turn range it will stuff your clock spring. These pix might assist. One from Bentley manual. Other is my old rack there is a mark on the plastic sleeve which should line up with metal ridge on rack body and the split seam on the universal joint. Do you use new or refurb rack

I did mine with pierburg pump (OEM) , new OEM thermostat, genuine coolant, all new ali bolts etc for $650NZD, and about 4 hours labour (having never done it before). Its nowhere near as scary as the internet sometimes says, and the pump was at 230 something thousand ks before it started throwing an intermittent canbus error.

Whole car was a bit gross, listing was withdrawn by the dealer, and then popped back a few months later at a muccch lower price point. Of the 30 NZ new 130s, only 12 are manuals.. Less NZ New 130s than 1Ms!

Yes, steering wheel should not have been turned while rack was out. Is your front jacked up (i.e. both your front wheels off the ground) or did you use ramps? Just make sure you clean all parts thoroughly. If you get the right angle it slips on like butter. Don’t force it.

Make sure you have it dialed in . Other wise you'll be needing a new clock spring

This is next in a couple of weeks time ? I last did this about 10 years ago. Will be doing it a bit more often now.

Yeah, but then I would have to come back and pick it up, rather than leaving it behind and not returning!

A key point in the background info.. Vehicles belonging to individuals with a confidential listing have not been included. So anyone that has requested their information to be private and confidential will not have their vehicles included in this data. This is now being adopted more and more often. Still a useful tool to play with though.

Thanks for the link to the NZTA motor vehicle register. I've been after this sort of data access for a while and have had a fun morning digging through it all.

the other one 3 door is white with a black stripe running down off centre. Located in auckland last time it was for sale, not sure now since its sold. I think it had brown leather but not 100% sure if my memory is correct. The kms were over 100,000 also. nothing special and after it was sold the first time it came back up for sale not long after and disappeared again. You definitely have a rare car for sure.

Maybe because I'm rapidly approaching 50; those Alpina B5's (B7's, and even B3's) look the business inside and out - refined, subtle, classy, powerful, and relatively understated. Do I think they're worth as much (or more) than the relative M car? Not on your Nelly... completely different market and to me, nowhere near the same value.Having said that - very few buyers would be cross-shopping an Alpina and an M3/5 so it's a moot point, like most others.

Cant speak for a turbo application part but lots members here running the above Penrite in many BMW engines with good results. Ive used in most BMW's ive owned and can't fault it.
