Normal... the car isn't six months old...it's 7 years old. It's called catch up on maintenance

So for the past 18 months I’ve had a 1988 E30 coupe project to replicate a Alpina B3 2.7 and have thought for a while I should create a plog.. but maybe the horse has bolted.. maybe I’ll get around to it.. But with buying my long held ambition and first M3 along with some inspirational plogs particularly by KwS and M3AN I could/should/would. So picking up the baton, in this case KwS’s old E36 M3 and with thanks to mzhu031 for selling it. So this was taken the day I brought it 4th April You know I’ve never had a white car and would’ve liked a racing white M3 but not for $38k lol. I have had silver and imho easy to keep looking clean. I like that it’s on 8.5’s all round but not convinced with the polished style 24s tbh maybe they’ll grow on me. I had it checked by a local Indie which highlighted a few issues all fixable Mechanically it’s in good shape and my early stage plan is to fix the above and tidy up the exterior and interior plus a few other enhancements in no particular order - Mount front lip - Replace rear shock mounts including reinforcement plates DONE - Replace rear shock absorbers with Bilstein B6’s (Bilstein B6 struts front, stock springs all round tbc) - Replace front tyres with Yokohama AD08Rs (matching new rears) - Screws for front valance - Front subframe reinforce and repair - Clean engine bay and detail - Service fluids engine, gearbox, lsd diff - Source 2nd hand front bumper support brackets, highbeam covers - Repair LH door card - Replace steering wheel with 3 spoke DONE - Clean interior including steam clean carpet and seats - Re-trim front seats - M3 floor mats - Check spark plugs, distributor & rotor - Respray boot lid and front valance - Replace brake rotors and pads - Replace exhaust back box Have completed a few of these in a burst of enthusiasm and posted under “what I did today” forum.

Highest Mileage I have seen in NZ. Yet one owner with full service history. Even with that mileage I would trust it more than most of the other mystery M3's on the road.

Updates: Changed more things, big ones are the FPR, ignition coil and all the injectors. Coil made a minor difference but the injectors had a dramatic affect, both positive and negative. The injectors are the (known good) Ford Mustang type with the updated pintle. Resistance and flow should be the same as stock and they are a drop in replacement. Following observations directly after injector swap: - Idle went down to a struggling 600rpm. Perhaps some vacuum leak around the old injectors is now sealed? The old injector ends were caked in dirt. - Actual idle quality however is now pretty poor, very warbly (and not in a good way) with moderate shaking, not sure if misfiring or what. - Drive quality is the opposite (of idle), vastly improved, good pickup, smooth and quiet etc. I mean, best I've had with it, by far. - Wife was driving behind me and she pulled out and got in front (in a 550i, wasnt hard). She later told me the e28 stinks of burning and fuel. I tweaked the idle speed up again with the adjustment screw and left it at 900rpm. Drove around, felt great. When came to a stop again idle had crept up to 1300rpm now!? Adjusted it back to around 750rpm, minor shaking and un-eveness, a compromise. Any ideas? Maybe I should get the CO mix adjusted by someone with the CO meter?

Ok, so obviously i've been trying to sell this car for a bit now, have had more time wasters with this car than any car i have sold previously. A couple of people that were "super keen" have even test driven the car, only to suddenly not be keen based on the KM (i've made the KM pretty clear), or because it's not "A real M" (also obvious from the start). I've been offered as low as 7K, and even a couple of offers in my ballpark that I have accepted, only to never hear from them again. So i'm seriously considering keeping the car for a longer period. That would mean finishing the list of things I want to do to the car (mostly cosmetic stuff), sorting the suspension (upgrading, either BC Golds or maybe Koni, and poly bushes) and a cert. On a whim i popped to Pick A Part today and got a good haul. Turns out they have a coupe there, so grabbed a few things I needed, including the boot carpet and plastic trim.... which means I can finally f**k off the boot install. I still forgot the ambient temp sensor, which was the whole reason i went >_< Next time.

i have some experience with the TDS engine if needed. also Lance @melowpuf has even more. When his 325tds got run up the back of, i reshelled the whole lot into a 328i cabby, i did the swap. the car now lives in Tauranga, and can be seen at Hampton skid pan/drift days from time to time. when you say lumpy on idle, is this only when cold or at all times ? if just when cold it will be the glow plug relay, aparently a common failure item.

Given the content of recent VTNZ adverts, I assume this is OK on NZ roads?

I was in the same boat. Took forever to find a FL coupe with no sunroof in good condition. When I did, I didn't MI d spending the money. Blasphemy! Haha. I rate the non-m E30 highly. Such cool wee cars to drive, rear wheel drive, manual, classic look, lots of parts. However I couldn't justify ever spending $100k+ on an E30 M3, even if lotto gave me a donation.

Had the day off to get a few things done. Started with wheel alignment post the suspension upgrades. Off for a warrant, VTNZ. Ok here we go. much discussion from the team there on the new suspension. FAILED, requires LVV cert, WTF. (Replaced Self Leveling Suspension and deleted it) Also failed excess smoke, brake bias. ( has been sitting around a bit). Stupid notes about the spare wheel not being bolted down. Righto, minor argument at the time, off I go somewhat steaming. Changed the oil (was going to do it anyway), few emergency stops on the brakes. Bit of LVV website printing, back I go. into the revert line, everyone vanishes . into the office, say I want to challenge the findings thanks, in my nicest management tone. Please wait by the car sir. 5 mins later, nice manager comes out and we have a wee chat, he knew all about it. To his credit said he’ll have another look, on it goes over the pit. 2 of them prode, shine the lights around, ask me about the replacements and then are worried that all the control arms are for a different car. FU summaries my update to them, in general terms. after much umming and erring, me waving the standards about, they decide it’s acceptable and recheck the brakes, How are they I ask? Perfect no problem now sir. Ok how’s the excessive smoking ( I’ve near even seen smoke out of it)? Revs it a bit, yip that must have fixed it sir. Great, Warrant passed then, yip. So once it’s on the window, I ask how do I go about avoiding this next time and get told it’ll be fine because it won’t be all shiny and new any more, oh yeah of cause the dirt clause, missed that in the WOF Requirements .... I need a drink. At least I can drive to get one

B12 pro kit all in, replacement rear suspension arms and links while I was there. Definately a firmer ride but still very compliant, really nice feel. Needs an alignment now to finish off. First impressions are it’s nicely aligned to the natural balance of the car and will make it more of a B road runner which was what I was after so currently very happy. Drops a few cms so looking sharp
