Hi all, Recently picked up a 1994 NZ New E36 M3 from Christchurch and drove it back up to Auckland. I wasn't specifically looking for one as I had been building an E36 328i for the track but when it comes down to it the 328i will never be as good as an M3. The S50 is an amazing engine and I've missed my old M3 (and the ones before that..) ever since I sold it/them. Being a 1994 the car started life as a PFL 3.0 M3 but in circa 2012, it underwent a transformation which includes the updated and superior S50B32, 6 speed 420G, steering rack, arms, brakes, cluster and interior all from a donor with 90,000km. From what I can see, the only things that remain PFL include a medium case diff, climate control, steering wheel and colour (Avus blue). I still haven't worked out what the car is in my mind- a frankenstein M3? 'M3 evo'? ultimate 'PFL M3'? I want to say its an evo but I know that's not strictly correct so I guess its just an M3. List of things that I've done and would like to do: Motor -Rebuild vanos unit (Seals, rattle kit etc) -Change spark plugs. -Mishimoto radiator -10W-40 oil change. -Carbon fiber intake plenum (Dreaming a little..) -VAC secondary air pump delete kit. (No VAC plate yet) -VAC underdrive pulley kit. -Clean up ICV, PCV and throttle bodies. -Replace perished vacuum lines. Everything checked out after close inspection Drivetrain -Fluid change on gearbox -Single mass flywheel and clutch kit (one which doesn't chatter at idle) -Replace shifter bushes -Fluid change on diff -Repaint diff -Braided clutch line -Gearbox mounts Brakes -Rebuild calipers (Back right sticks slightly) -Replace rotors -Replace pads -Fluid change Suspension/ chassis -Powerflex LCA's -Powerflex RTABs -Powerflex camber arms -X brace -Front and rear strut braces -Shock tower reinforcement plates -Coilovers? Cosmetic/Misc. -Fog lights -GT front splitter -Cut and polish -Replace window rubbers -OMP steering wheel Here are some pics anyway. So far the only real thing I've done is wash it and take the hideous wheels off. The engine bay needs a lot of loving. Currently borrowing some DS1s from. @atlantiskiwi

Spotted in the Goodwood parking lot. 850csi. Yum. Had its park lights on all day, but still fired up like a champ.

I was going to ask, how many M3's is that now Brad? ? Yes, Avus is beautiful... was available as an Individual option on the Evo as well. The front grill+support and the side markers are PFL also but a number of Evo's are PFL anyway (mine is but since mostly updated). You could also get that horrible steering wheel as late as 1999! Seats look mint, I'm jealous already. They actually look like mine, Lotus White, do you know the specific colour? Front fogs also look like mine at the moment! ? You need to get that feather duster out! ?

Check out the penrite site, the supercheap listing doesnt have all the spec. I have about 210,000km N52B30 kms ticked up on the Castrol now (between two cars), last oil change switched to HPR 5, as saw it also met the spec.. and is arguably technically superior...

I know you'll get a good run out of it and its already miles better than your average flogged import. Mine has just hit 290,000km and while im going to give it another birthday soon to keep on top of things, most engine related parts are original and still in working order. I wish my paint was as nice as yours, open road driving and living outside really takes a toll.

Ah yeah wrong name. I meant CCV valve the entire time. sh*t of a thing.

Do N51's have a PCV valve? A PCV with a worn out diaphragm (common in cold weather) will cause an oil smell and consume oil over time. They are vacuum controlled. So another cause is vacuum leaks. Probably the most common BMW issue. I would check for Vacuum leaks first. Then have a look at the PCV valve. There should be plenty of guides on youtube. Checking for vacuum leaks isn't always easy. The fastest way to do this is running a smoke test. Where the smoke leaks out is where your leak is. The gear to do this isn't usually owned by the home mechanic though.

HD last Saturday was very fine and very cold only 3C Had a lot of fun with a number of other Bimmers out there. An interesting wear pattern on my front left inside. (ran the same camber settings as June -3.5, But I was naughty as I didn't check the temps or pressures after first setting them at 35 cold, but by the hand omiter they were only ever just warm to the touch. Comes from the Land rover clubs in UK... nitpicky pratts that will go totally off the deep end if they suspect that an old land rover has been put together/restored with the incorrect number of rivets... etc... much like the small group of BMW "rivet counters" on this forum that anally go after any car that is not OEM (in their absolute opinions of course!)

Idrive? If not, engine on, and use the flicker switch and BC button to go to the reset option, and press and hold. It will then re-calibrate as you drive off. Youtube is handy for this

156,597 kms. Just achieved my second 10,000 “achievement points” in the old girl this week. Second 10,000 has been much the same as the first 10,000. Everything just keeps on working. A quick clean yesterday to celebrate the occasion (was also used to chauffeur my sister and date to their school ball last night) ?

Don’t enter sales. If you were to view people who wanted to spend money with you as lazy f**ckwits and treated them as such, you’d go hungry. You want to make it easy for them to part with their cash. This takes a little effort, and a measure of patience. If you want to sell on-line , whether it’s TradeMe, forums, or FB marketplace, you can’t assume people can see the detail in images. They may be viewing in a hurry on a small phone with a broken screen, in bright light... whereas the words will net you the sale, no questions asked. Some don’t really get your words initially, and need first the pictures and then the words to verify. Some are only viewing your pictures and can’t see or don’t have time to read your words. When you list something, you’re hanging out your For Sale slate... part of the territory is inviting in the oddball buyer, the browser, the tyre kicker, as well as your ideal buyer. The better your advert - copy and images - the lower the noise. You can help the oddballs self-select out, if it matters to you; you just need to tailor your listing. It’s that simple. ”it’s all here, read the listing, look at the photos, don’t ask me stupid f#*king questions, ‘kay?” Does that sound helpful and inviting, or grumpy and arrogant? I find it amazing that folks list a car for sale with some pics and “e46 Ci, lows, serviced, leather, PM me offers”. If the expectation is that I’m going to search rego on CarJam to find model details and VIN, figure out the mileage etc... they’re dead wrong. cheers

So I should keep hold of my Nz new Mtech 1 manual 325i? i priced up replicating an M325i a couple of years ago after driving my old one (that my dad has) and couldn’t see any change from $25k to do it right.

I paid 10k for mine facelift 325 auto about 3 odd years ago. Now has tech 2 kit, alpina boot spoiler and manual and IF I'd sell it, would want north of 20. I do need sort out the seats however

the prices for E30's have been this way for a good 5 years now and good examples are near impossible to find. anything sub 5k is definitely project material and anything that can be driven is asking 8k+ for basic auto and around 13-15k for something slightly desirable in manual.

Just thrown some photos and some info up about the E3 for those that are interested, done it in the Projects section:

155,500 kms. New rubber time. In preparation for the new Michelins I got Auto38 to check my suspension as my old Eagle F1s were wearing unevenly. The LF lower control arm and LR upper arm were shagged, so they were quickly replaced. This also got rid of an annoying suspension clunk issue I had ?. Then a new set of Michelin PS4s. I can’t believe how much the old worn tyres were holding this car back. It’s got way more traction, the steering is more responsive, it handles a LOT nicer and the overall drive is noticeably smoother. Finally got this car driving exactly how I want it to. Really enjoying it at the moment.
