Hey everyone i am buying a 79 635csi from my work next week. What am i getting myself into?? The car has been in dry storage for 8 years i havent seen it run in this whole period but we have never tried to get it going. It has only ever been towed or pushed to different locations. I put the jump pack on it yesterday and it all powered up and did turn over but I didnt continue to try anymore from there. Now from what i have found out from my research it was produced in September 1978 which makes it one of 98 made that year and was in the first group of RHD manuals ever produced. It is originally from the UK. Was first registered here in 1990. From what i can tell it looks to have the M90 (will confirm, now that i know to look for the L on the block) I have looked in most spots for rust everything looks fine. But that is also without getting it on a hoist. Now my first goal is to get it running and to move it from where it is to give it a major water blast. How much work is going to be involved for me to get this running. I know ill need to dump the old fuel. Here are some photos of the car not the best as its in a dark corner in the back of the warehouse.

Might as well document this little project... same as all N52 sump gaskets, they eventually fail (normally in the rear left corner). Parts are cheap but its a lot of work to get access to em. Will do the same as what I did on my 130i, drop the subframe down without removing it and work around it... its a bit of a mare but totally removing the subframe really requires a hoist! My 330i is an auto, so has the bulkier alloy sump rather than the 130i's pressed steel manual version sump, hopefully it doesnt make it more of a prick to remove. Obligatory engine mount replacement at the same time. Step 1 - degrease the sh*t out of it all and give it a clean up

Looking at Carjam, you'll want to sort out that Rego pronto, does not appear to be on hold. e24s are prone to rust, though yours came into NZ ~30 years ago with just ~20k miles on the clock. There's a fair chance it's in reasonably sound nick underneath. The general parts such as brake hoses, pads & rotors, suspension bushes, cooling system parts etc are essentially as cheap as e30s, and in plentiful supply. You can expect to replace pretty much everything that's rubber as the car is approaching it's 41st birthday, particularly fuel system. Once it's thoughtfully recommissioned you'll have a cool car. e24 values are on the up. They're not making more of them, and if one wishes to campaign a classic BMW touring car, with the (escalating) state of e30 M3 prices, the e24 makes great sense at a more 'affordable' level. Meanwhile you can enjoy an excellent road car. EDIT: appears it'll need new odometer gears too - they've been broken a long time!

Yeah, and I hate the puddles in the garage. Good video though. Need to buy heaps of new gaskets it seems.

Last round of Night Speed was binned understandably. But fortunately at the round I did attend, the local photographer (Mark Waterson) was able to snap some pics. The above mid-skid photo seems to show that rear valance is dented? Had never noticed it. Pretty sure I chopped this guy...

Yeah, can't imagine it's cheap to send a wheel back and forward to the US. Stitching is easy if you take your time - I actually just re-did my one as first time around I was a bit lazy, now its pretty mint. Takes a few hours including pulling the wheel off. I went black on black on purpose however - coloured stitching would show up any imperfection. Extra wheel thickness is great too ?

Hmm, interesting... does the e36 one fit the motorsport bumper? Do you remove the existing splitter? Looks like you're good at this stuff... I have a genuine Hamann e36 spoiler that is really "race fit" only but with a bit of fettling could end up being the base for a great mould... interesting idea? Im not in disagreement about the current law but i highly doubt many are getting pinged for DPF's regardless when their vehicle was registered before or after 2010. As Jon said they are said they are looking at changes and you can almost guarantee there wont be a shortage of people failing for removing them. The excessive smoking aspect is one ive made from the start and my main gripe which emission testing will help curb.

Had a wee dabble at the drags last night for the first time. Had alot of fun! It was the 2nd to last round for the season so I was fortunate to be able to do pass after pass without any queues or interruption. Managed to do 10 passes and we still hadn't got into the competitive side of it. From the get go I was surprised at the time I was getting. At a guess I thought I'd be into the high 13's but after the first pass I was left red faced with a 14.8 After about 5 passes I was starting to get the hang of the staging process, getting traction, not bogging down, not worrying about the person next to me, gears etc. A mate text me (just happens to be this guy... https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12314779. He cut his teeth on racing Hondas at this track, so I knew i could trust his advice) and said to drop the rear tyre pressure to 15psi. Lo and behold, I managed to basically shave half a second by leaving the line at higher revs and get a personal best of 14.2. Next time (28th of March) I want to be able to get to the 13s. The above mentioned mate said he'll lend me some proper wheels, perks of the early Hondas and the e30 having the same stud pattern! I'll also take out the sub, spare tyre in an attempt to shave a 0.1 or so off. All in all, heaps of fun and I was stoked the motor/diff/cooling swap stood up to the evening at Meremere.
