  1. Been trying to find a reliable indy down here for a while.  Very different scene in Wellington.
Is the same for Mercedes and wheel alignments past tyre shop absolute basics.

They all want you to drop your car off.  Not say a word.  Pick up and Pay.  Anything out of the norm gets ignored.  If your car is old they treat it like sh*t and just don't care.
Gazley promised a full Merc spec alignment.  I assumed they had their own machine.  Nope.  Just were going to get one of the kids to take it down the road to the closest tyre shop.

  2. The auto box is good for an auto.  It is quite fast.  They all come with paddles.  There are a few mods for them too.  I can't be assed with a manual for a commuter.  Especially as they are so much more expensive.

    On another note.
I think I stuffed up the auto wipers on my car.  I hit the auto button and when they sense rain they just run the same intermittent timer.  They don't change with rain intensity.  Has anyone stuffed this up before and fixed it?
I was mucking around with the features turning them off and on.
It is possible it started doing this when I installed cruise control.  I used the wiper stalk that came with it and it doesn't have a rear wiper ability.

I have now had the Goodyear Eagle F1Asymmetric 6  tyres on the front of the Skoda for just over a week and have done about 600kms on them. It should come as no surprise that compared to the Laufen's they are noticeably better in all measures, (that are important to me). Wet grip is probably the most noticeable improvement, even in heavy rain I could be confident in a corner. This is not punting it either, just cornering while staying within the speed limit. The Laufenn's in comparison would lose grip, understeer and I suspect they were hydroplaning. It was hugely disconcerting and the lack of feel made it scary. When they were removed they had around 4mm's of depth maybe a bit more. In the dry its what you would expect from a good tyre, good steering feel and high grip levels. The ride is quiet and being a 45 aspect ratio tyre with no non sporty suspension, the ride is comfortable with only a slight increase in firmness.

Sadly it looks like all the Asymmetric 6's that were on special have gone. Apparently with the change of distribution for Goodyear, Hyperdrive bought up all the existing stock. I was told we probably wont see those prices again.

Just to be the total opposite.  I have Laufenn LK03's aka S Fit on my 130i.  Zero issues.  Zero understeer.  Hammer on them over the hill at least once a week.  They are coming to the end of their life at around 30K and I am pretty hard on them.
I would say some of your issue is down to the VAG vehicle they are attached to.  The tyres are not the best but I have never experienced what you are.

  4. It will be one of the centre heat shields.  Mine does it on occasion.  I just give it a little bend until it stops.
Right dead centre of the car though.  Any exhaust shop or mechanic should be able to give it a tweak for you.
Otherwise I could help sometime after work next week.  I have a hoist and am in Featherston just over the hill.

  5. Don't forget that compulsory $500 EQC levy that was slapped onto all House insurance.  I was stoked to find out about that one.  That and my $4000 rates where I receive so much f**k all it's not funny.

Classic Cover has been great for me for 3 cars and 2 bikes.  However I am stuck with AA for the other 3 cars.  Classic cover is worth a try if you have something a little more rare or special.  They even do lay up and transport insurance for my racecar and it's only about $240 per year.

Not sure if you are referring to the cybertruck or the i5 there, but in terms of the i5 then I would argue that it depends on your definition of enjoyment.
If throwing it through the twisties with the engine roaring is your idea of enjoyable, then yeah the i5 is not for you.

However, if driving from Auckland to Napier in serene comfort at not inconsiderable speed  (once over the ooh how many kms range can I get moment) with wife, kids and a bootfull of week-end stuff and getting out at the other end four and a half hours later not feeling it is more up your street then I would suggest you give it a try.

It also performed pretty well driving over the lumps and bumps of coarse chip in South Island as well.

What's the NZ retail on that Jon ^_^

Haven't watched the video yet, but from what I have seen of the new 5 so far.  What is the point of it?  It's time for some real innovation in cars.  Cybertruck is a step in the right direction.

I would say the Cyber Truck is exactly the same thing with a kids drawing body slapped on top. Crammed full of gimmicks. You're not going to get driving enjoyment from one. But its perfect for the attention seeker.

  8. Regen braking that doesn't activate brake lights.  Absolute joke.  I watched a newish Hyundai slow from 80kph to 50kph quite quickly without any brake lights being activated.  So quick I thought their lights were not working.

I think you can take the whole emissions thing seriously when you no longer see ex Japan refrigerated trucks being driven around belching black smoke. I assume they will do this at some stage which will be interesting for all the egr/dpf delete folk.

Government needs to start going after companies that have been doing this.  Good money to be made.
Company was fined $1m USD last year for it.

"Interesting" RUC calculation for hybrids at $57/1000km, which assumes they all run at 3l/100km (referenced from the source, not performed my own calculations).

A missed opportunity to change the flat rate of $76/1000km for everything under 3.5T. Quite a large difference between your 118d and M50d 😂

They absolutely have the data and ability to do this too.
It is already half assed in place for heavy vehicles.  Worked with all this data when I worked for Eroad.

@Driftit how much should I expect to pay for "parking sensors"?

That R8 setup with Highway Radar seems damn good, but I saw a few people on RDForums saying laser was getting more common.

Parking sensors are hard to get here now.  The ones on my Merc have been on there at least 10 years now.
They are active ones meaning they are always on.  The passive or reactive ones last I read were no good.
Have a go through youtube and watch some tests.  Many barely work especially if placed poorly.  Mine are almost on my number plates where most guns will target.

Took the 130 for a very over due drive out to kaipara today, got pulled over on the way home... 100% police profiling 😕 Was in middle of queue of traffic doing exactly 100kmh, light truck in front of and behind me,... apparently the goat track out there is 80 (going to google maps street view it, because faffed if I saw any signs..)... I need to do some research into radar detectors.

That is real sh*t.  I've seen it happen to a young dude in an Evo7/8/9 right in front of me.  Cop moved 3 normal looking cars to pull him over.  Ignoring the two utes ahead of him.  His car looked standard, but not like the other boring sh*t around him I guess.

Highway radar will link to my R8NZ over bluetooth, link to waze crowd source data and display police reports, link to air traffic and display your position on a map.

This sounds amazing.  I am so sick of tip toeing around the Wairarapa at the moment so would like to update the system.  My old stealth Bell system in the Merc is starting to play up.  Gives an error beep after about 30mins of it being on.  The laser  parking sensors seem still happy but i've only seen on cop with a radar gun in the last 3 months and I was in the wrong car.

There are so many cops trying to catch people 4kph over the speed limit on dead straight roads.  One flashed me at 82kph (GPS).  I was on cruise control on the roads between Greytown and Featherston.  Dead straight.  Nobody around me.  I made sure he could see me shaking my head like some grumpy old man.
