  1. I can't really disagree, I am an auto Electrian by trade and I am on my 5th BMW. I think they are great to drive, they make me feel good when I am in them and they have style and performance, but they are not reliable in comparison to say a Japanese car. Part of it is the amount of plastic used in the engine and it's ancillaries and perhaps some of it is German obsession with achieving an engineering goal that ignores engine or engine ancillary longetivity.
  2. I run 98 but use a 95 map for no other reason than having a buffer just in case.
  3. Yes I have just had a look, lots of good people on Bimmersport keeping an eye on this for me.
  4. With regard to replacing the cats with aftermarket downpipes is it a straightforward car on jacks job or do you really need a hoist?
  5. My 335i had a rocker cover leak at 75,000kms.
  6. Car looks great Hans.
  7. Cant answer questions 1 and 3 but based on what people have posted the Bridgestone RE003 seems to hit the sweet spot for performance vs price. Buy them when BS has a a 3 for 4 or buy one get next 1/2 price deal.
  8. Yeah watched his videos hes a realist not much into the fun part of car ownership more the practicalities. BMW is one of the few Euro manufacturers who dont get chewed up too often.
  9. Oops sorry, have to make sure I do it properly next time. Decent test driver though.
  10. To be fair the track is probably a bit short for a few of these cars to show thier real ability but interesting all the same. 4WD would of course be the answer to the power down issue.
  11. My wifes Skoda needs new front pads and rotors. Gazely quoted $750. I looked around for a set which happen to be the same as a Golf Mkv and came across Micks Garage in Ireland. Now I know a few of you have bought parts there before but when I looked at parts for my 335i they didn't have what i wanted. Anyway I found a set of Mintex rotors and pads, price including freight to NZ was $160 NZD. They arrived today 5 days after ordering them. Now Mintex isn't top of the tree but my research showed that they make good mid range products so interested to see how they last and what performance is like. Its a commuter car so no likelihood of press on driving.
  12. Just about in 335i territory. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-1348443064.htm
  13. I am pretty set on an R1 now, will pick one up in the US in September.
  14. Here are some Lap times from Motoring.co.au during the "Australias Best Drivers Car event. 15. That's always the challenge get the power in a light chassis
  16. My experience with 003's would say they have reasonable wear life.
  17. It would be good if some of those came in RHD.
  18. E60 M5 is nice and the E92 M3 is still desirable but after that generation it's all F/I
  19. After being away from 300 plus HP cars for a while I have been enjoying the performance of my MHD enhanced 335i, horsepower and torque have always made me happy. I got to thinking when I get the itch for something newer what will I get that has the HP to put a smile on my dial? As I tend to think of engines as much as chassis's the newer cars, bar a few, that floated my boat all had forced induction. I test drove a an E92 M3 a while back and loved the power it made when it revved and the 996 911 that nearly ended up in my garage last year had an equally enjoyable engine and even an older Integra I drove recently made me smile with that nice V-tec buzz. The thing is I have now become re-addicted to that broad power band that turbo engines and some big displacement V8's provide. Then I thought, is there a big/powerful N/A engine in a chassis that I could afford (Audi R8 V10's are not in my budget) that would surpass what I have now? Now I know there are a few things to consider like power to weight ratio and how much luxury I want but with the demise of Holden (Divisive car I know but it does have a bigish HP N/A engine) I just can't think of any N/A cars I would own. Is the future all Forced induction until we all buy electric cars?
  20. According to the internet mine should be bolted in. Anyone in wellington that could install it?
  21. I have learned a lot about E90/92s in the past few months and I am not as worried now as I was. Yes there is plenty to go wrong but in my case the solutions were quite straightforward, but I guess that's easy to say in hindsight especially as I tried to fix everything else probably knowing what the actual issue was. The reward is in my case good horsepower in a pretty good chassis. If this maintenance burden is too much and I do understand if it is, then the options are Japan and for a little while longer Australia.
  22. Personally I think this is good as it puts the established sports/performance car makers on notice. It will of course struggle to erode the brand cachet that European manufacturers have. However the good thing about the Euro manufacturers is the emergence of more affordable performance cars, M2, CLA and RS3. I think we are in such a great time for affordably quick cars especially in NZ as we can get second hand 335is for $20K, Nissan GTRS for 70k and 996 911's for less than 40k.
  23. I find it quite interesting just how quick the Nissan GTR's are. For such a big heavy car they can set some pretty spectacular lap times. Also the Camaro Z28 's is quite outstanding, sure it has a 7l engine and 305 tyres up front but for a car that based on the Holden Commodore it moves.
  24. So I post up something that could stimulate a bit of chat about fast cars.
  25. While lap times will vary day to day it is still useful to judge where cars sit in the big scheme of things. Also you will see that some cars were tested in the same year that means they were tested at the same time as this is based on an annual event.
