  1. Hey thanks mate, I've passed that place a few times and saw they had plenty of beemers piled up :-) I'll give them a call, thanks for the tip.
  2. Hey all, It looks as though the ABS module on my sons 318ti may be toast - it's been scanned with a 5df5 control module internal failure. Are there any options to have it repaired / exchanged etc that are more economical than the $450 I've been quoted for a replacement ? I'm going to try cleaning the wheel sensors first, but I'm not too hopeful.... Thanks
  3. an update on the burning oil situation, it was the vacuum pump that was leaking oil through the cover. Took it off, got a seal kit, fitted the seals, refitted and it seems all good now. Just have to chase down this ABS issue now !
  4. Hey mate, we're in Rototuna. Car isn't going at the moment as I haven't got the vac pump reinstalled yet. If you could scan it for us that would be awesome. Cheers.
  5. Hey guys, thanks heaps for the help ! I'm just reporting back after chasing down another, possibly related, fault. The car was dripping oil out onto the exhaust from the back of the engine and making a holy stink so I've been fixing that. I removed the vacuum pump (as I see online this is a common leak point) and now I've fitted a new seal kit to it. I just need to re-torque the cover back on and get it back into the head. Regarding code reading, I've just been using a Bluetooth OBD2 reader I bought off Trademe together with the Torque app on Android. Would I need something more like INPA and a suitable interface (again, from Trademe I think) to access all codes properly ? Thanks again for the help so far :-)
  6. Hey guys, Justin here. My son has just bought his first car - an 02 318ti. Seems like a great car for him and we got a great price on it but it does have a couple of issues. First issue is the ABS warning system - all the lights are on but no codes (or at least, none that I can read) are being thrown to the ECU. Could I get some advice on what this may mean ? I'm planning to check / clean all the wheel sensors over the weekend and have already checked / topped up the brake fluid level. The next issue was discovered when I scanned the ECU, looking for ABS fault codes. What I actually found were secondary air injection fault codes for bank 1 and bank 2. Is this a common / easy to resolve issue by any chance ? We also have a smell of (what I assume to be) burning oil and a very light amount of smoke emitting from around the engine somewhere. I'm thinking it could just be excess oil from a careless top-up that's burning off, but otherwise it could be related to the CCV system, maybe a split pipe or something ? Again, advice on this would be very much appreciated. Cheers all :-)
  7. Hey all, after some searching and a near purchase of a 320i, my son has now purchased a 2002 318ti and is in love with it. I'm an IT engineer by profession and pretty handy with some spanners so I'm here to get some tips and tricks fir fixing up the wee beastie for him. We have a couple of issues that I'll post about in the relevant sections but basically, we have all the ABS warning lights lit up like a Christmas tree and the car is throwing secondary air injection error codes from the ECU. We got a great price on it though, so hopefully these are not going to be too damaging to fix !
  8. Hey thanks mate - actually we didn't end up buying this car but we bought a 2002 318ti, which hopefully will server my son well as his first car (and first Beemer ever in our family). Cheers :-)
  9. Hey all, this is a rather abrupt introduction for myself and I do apologise for jumping straight in with a question. The reason for this is I'm trying to negotiate a deal on a really sweet E46 320i which has just failed the WoF because the airbag / SRS light doesn't work.... I've found heaps of information online about the light staying on, but nothing about it never coming on. On the car I'm looking at, the light does nothing during ignition. I've checked the associated fuse (11, I believe) and that's all good so I'm kinda stuck - is it likely to be costly to rectify (and therefore a good bargaining tool) ? The car is overall in really good nick, although it's been dry stored for the last two years and the battery was allowed to go flat. It's got previous history, last WoF passed all ok prior to being laid up, 139000 KMs on the clock, 2nd NZ owner. I'd very much welcome any thoughts on this issue and whether I should still go ahead with the deal - the other WoF fail item was the front right lower control arm play nut that's relatively easy to sort out. Stuff like airbags etc can be a minefield for the uninitiated (like me). Cheers all :-)
