M10-M40 swap

Recommended Posts

Guest Andrew

Just out of interest, what will it take to do a M10-M40 swap in an 85 318i?

Cheers

the way i see that swap is... a gutless motor swapped with a slightly less gutless motor... why?

yeah id be going with an m42 too....a WAY better 4cyl option...or even better, the 1.9ltr m44, with a later option for a downing/atlanta supercharger kit!

i've got an M44, and wouldnt recommend it, the intake has been slaughtered for emissions.

Is the m44 OBDII ?

Dude just get a built M20 (2.7 with 323 or 325 head) if you want some more power.

Dont the M10s have 100hp vs 140-150 with the M40s?

My aunty has an 87 318i and had the engine swapped with an early E36 1.8 (Is that the M40?) after the original cracked the cylinder head, or blew the gasket, and has done about 300,000km

Its running Bosch M5.2 (OBD II)

And its VANOS as well, whereas the M42 is not.

Can you do the OBDI conversion? .. is it worth it? .. would certainly get rid of your emission restrictions.

I don't see any point to be honest.

OBD is merely a diagnostic tool. Its the American cars that have the huge emissions crap. For example, Euro (our) S50 engines don't have OBD at all! Ace.

Well, I actaully have an M42. Good.

The intake manifold is exactly the same. Bad.

Head gasket is not a problem. Good.

you can get a lot more power by removing the ODB emission restrictors. When i say a lot.. I mean 20 - 30 hp.

So how would one go about getting this extra power eh?

So when you get it chipped you can have that done too?

some head modifications. There are a lot of articles for doing it on m50/m52
