Being a poor University student.

Recommended Posts

Alright. I'm off to Uni next month.

I don't know how I'll live off one hundred and something dollars a week, considering my rent in H-town will be $100 a week...plus power and food.

Parent's will most likely give me a Caltex card to use because they love me.

But there is no way I can possibly live like that (even for 12 or so weeks), cos I have champayne taste in clothes and dinner's out.

But...I wanna know...if I got a part-time job, is there a limit of how much money I can earn? Cos study-link watch you right??

I got told I can get done for fraud if I earned about $200 a week and had it put into another bank account (like a family member's).

Any help??

Thanks!

if you get a part time job i think you can earn approx $175 post tax after this they take off soemthiong like 40 cents to the dollar so if you earned $20 above that level they will take $8 off your student allowance

a couple of tips #1 they dont monitor how much you earn each week they just calculate if you have over earned at the end of the financial year (may) and then send you a bill for any extra student allowance (same way as what they do with a unemployment benafit)

second tip is that as a student you get a tax rebate at the end of the financial year which will far outweigh and bill you will get from them

as far as surviving financially in hams

dont bother finding expensive clothes to use for going out to town as almost every day thats any good to go out in hamilton is accompanied by a theme of dress so flash clothes are useless

get out of the habit of fancy food its all crap in hams anyway

and lastly get two sets of lock nuts and full insurance people round here just love chromies

P.S. i would check what i told you with studylink as they have made big changes since john key used it to buy the student vote so i dont know if it will work different to last year

Yep, they encourage cash payments so the pesky IRD need not know your earning 2k a week.. 2k would go miles at Glasson’s

Hey if you didn’t mind doing the odd “homer†you’d make 2k easy, problem is young people can’t be arsed working overtime.

I think most men would have that profession if they had the opportunity, its human nature .

All bulshit aside, why not get a job in a clothing shop? That way you would benefit from substantial staff discounts and after you have worn them twice re sell them on Trade-Me or to friends for more than what you paid for them, that way you will always have new clothes and make back your money in the form of cold hard cash.

I opted for ditching the student allowance and working many part-time jobs. If you want the dosh, make money work for you, work for the money. Or do both.

If you do not want to do either, move back home (if that's an option), stop drinking, and start budgeting.

That said, there is definitely a limit to a student's income, especially because good grades requires time. I live at home (don't pay board/rent :P), stopped drinking, and budgeted. On top of this I worked three reasonably paying (albeit stressful) jobs last year. All because I wanted a race car.

I'm guessing you don't want a race car. So if you did what I did, you should be able to afford dinner out at least 4-5 times a week on top of rent, substantial amounts of clothing, etc.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that - if you want to have high expenditure, you will have to refuse the student allowance and work for it.

if you are getting a student allowance then get living costs aswell ($150/week), you have to pay these back though.

get a part time job - preferably cash under the table

start a business ...

baby sit ?

No. 1 piece of advice - Live to a budget, don't get a credit card, if you have one chop it up.

I opted to use my student allowance (the one I have to pay back, to fund my race car  )

Don't do what I did. Im not worried, I only spend money on my car, cause live at home and would happily spend hours under the car than go out drinking etc at this point in time.

Just budget, buy things you need, not what you want and you should be fine. It all comes down as JiB said to what you want more, money and live in luxury, or good grades. There is a fine line most people try to chase, especially the ones that don't live at home.

Good luck.

Man have things changed!

Back in my day (12 years ago) I received $150 p/w living allowance as part of my student loan, which I had to pay back. This covered the majority of the hostel which was $180 p/w. The olds paid the $30 difference.

The Xmas break between school and uni I worked my a$$ off to pay for day to day living expenses. I pretty much had $50 a week to my name. I didnt have no flashy car a cell phone with 2000+ txts a day or cool threads. I walked everywhere, drank bulls eye beer (about $4 a doz) and never ate out.

Kids these days....shesh

Escorting....well if I wasn't classy and wasn't so fricken gorgeous I'd opt for it. ^_^

Plus, don't think the man in my life would approve!

Uhhhmm...so I'm gathering...student allowance you don't have to pay back, but the living cost what Ollie was talking about you have to pay back?

Credit cards...couldn't I have a 2k overdraft??

Can someone just tell me what to do. I'm like a puppy. I do what I'm told. With reasoning. ;)

P.s Imagine what I could do with 2k a week! Have a Louis Vuitton Bag for each day of the week!

its been raised to 155 a week now...inflation! not that it helps. but i dont think u can get both at once(i think?). You can also get course related costs = 1k a year....just send a qoute for a laptop or something u and u get it.

Student allowance is part of your loan, you can either get a allowance that you dont have to pay back if your combined parents income is under like 35K or something (most people can't get that) and the other allowance is like pocket money from the govt that you have to pay back and its added to your student loan (that one you get once a week and can be changed to anything up to $155 a week)

Hope that makes sense

What you really need to do is get rid of the blonde wig... sit down(by yourself) and ask yourself ... what do I want from this life of mine. Nothing comes easy.. work hard, commit to a goal, study, work long hours and the rewards will come your way.... nothing appears on a silver plater free... I know this from my experiences and what we have done for my daughters. They set goals, worked hard, sometimes very long hours and committed themselves to achieve. My eldest daughter (BA) is in London.. shes a clothing designer. My youngest daughter is a chartered accountant (BA) in Australia...soon she will have an income $300-$500,000 a year. Set your goals Missy... dont listen to non achievers. Make a lifestyle change, set a goal... and go and get it... otherwise you'll be just another tenant... banged up in a state house.

BTW: If I took some of the suggestions seriously, and I was your father.... I'd be hunting scalps
