Without wishing to be argumentative... the Xtreme is more like $800 more AND you need an external MAP sensor, so in total its more than 50% more. I really, really wanted to justify upgrading but couldn't, so I got a Storm.

Would be nice to have some time to put it in really :(

Its a combination of factors:

1) I have certain standards

2) I have close to no wiring loom (!) - its a big job

3) I need to wire up the fuel pumps and some gauges too

4) I have to wire in a wideband o2 and EGT gauge

5) Not everything (not much) is mounted yet.

If I got off my butt and got all the electronic bits mounted and ran the wiring for the fuel pumps it probably wouldn't be too bad, but as it sits it would be a very, very big bill and since I know how to do it myself I'd rather save the dollars for intercooler piping fabrication, race pads, new wheels and tyres, tuning, some more tuning, etc etc...

And for the race engine which isn't assembled yet - only have a crapper M10 in there to get it running. The poor headgasket better be very very afraid.

Yea thats a valid point. I think I paid roughly $3,200.00 this time last year for my Link G3 which included wiring it in completly and a full tune to get the car to as close to perfect tune and power run. They also tidy up all the wiring and delete any un-neccessary wires etc.. However in saying that Cam my fuel pump, boost controller, Oxygen sensor is all there and ready to go.

Fair enough if you know how to wire something like that up, I probably could too if I had the patience but thought id leave the tune and install to the experts in that area of the build.

Lol poor headgasket?

Are you going to pay someone to install the Link if you went down that track? If so you'd be best to ring the local installer/supplier in Auckland (Dodsons etc.. dont know who else does them there) and get a total price of the cost of the ECU + Install and tuning ;)

and finally can anyone recommend any aftermarket ecu's for the S50? as i have been told it saves alot of hassle with the factory ecu.....

Keep the factory ecu and get Gavin to modify it and tune it. You'd be surprised a what the factory ecu's can do and you don't have to mess around with wiring potentially damaging it. i think he just plugs straight into the diagnostic plug and away he goes ...

ollie - the guys at racefx reckon that since the engine is post 95' it will have EWS-II on it, which is the security to make sure the engine can only be used in the original chassis. I can buy a chip that will delete this feature.

I'll give Gavin a call and see what he can suggest.

Or you could be different and try out Megasquirt! Not sure if it does VANOS, But then again there is so much DIY these ECU's can do it's good sh*t!

This car is not going to be running Vanos, it is being removed......solves alot of problems

I used Gavin and would recommend him. Ollie is correct. He removes the ecu and plugs his computer straight into the ECU plug (not diagnostic). Throws an o2 meter up the cars bum and writes a map for it. Then he burns it to an eprom, and swaps it into your ecu.

There's another crowd out west (Patiki Road) that do a tune and ecu flash via the OBDII diagnostic plug as and specialise in modern euro vehicles Torque Performance

They were recommended on another nz forum.

James - Torque Performance in Avondale can get them in - its about $1600 plus any sensors? You need to have a discussion with them about whether the Storm meets your needs. Link have a preference for you talking to a distributor rather than them (ie the price is the same).

If I thought I could have it installed and tuned for another $1500 I would jump at it, but I imagine quite a bit more unfortunately.

The engine in the car is not the one I am going to use for racing - it is just there to get it going and get a base tune:

- race engine - rebuilt, forged pistons, o-ringed block, new cam and Ireland Engineering heavy duty rockers

- engine in car - E30 M10 bought for a bottle of bourbon, km unknown, condition unknown. Will be used to get Link set-up to start and idle (I need a base tune to start the rebuilt engine on - not a good idea starting an engine with new cams when you don't have a working tune), then will have boost progressively added until the headgasket lets go!

If the headgasket holds, I'm gonna see what a bottle of bourbon engine can do.

I can't remember where i read it, it was some ww2 sub book or it might have been on the history channel... old engine mech's in the subs would put whiskey or vodka into the diesel to increase the kaboom factor...

Update:

So after talking to a few people and gathering information, the car will be keeping the Factory ECU and keeping the Vanos, it will also be running a standard fly wheel instead of a dual mass one.

so far the car is getting the engine put in over the next few days, then suspension from there

I will probably give them a visit in a week or two to take some pic's :)

Update: RaceFx have been working hard on the car lately, to save time and money it has been decided to use a 318ti rear sumbframe for the rear and use a 3.91 e30 LSD with e36 328 trailing arms, the fronts will still be e36 m3 struts tho, so if anyone is looking for a 2.9 e36 LSD diff and/or e36 m3 rear subframe...im ya man

they are still messing around with the engine, its nearly ready to be put in, just a small problem with the dipstick

soon it will be suspension and wheel shopping time :) oh a wheel size we are going for is 17" 5x120 8" or wider, not sure what offset yet as were probably going to pump the guards

Sounds good :)

Is the LSD medium case or large case (non Evo M3 or Evo M3?)?

The one you're selling! The one going into the car has to be medium case.

Evo had large case - good for Evo and not much else. Non-Evo had medium case, good for other E36s, and the ratio and LSD pack could be used in an E30 as well (and Sammy has a WTB for a land-speed record diff).

Update:

Went over to have a looksee, its looking pretty good, they had to modify the number 6 exhaust manifold so it would not interfere with the steering. Also looking to get massive flared guards, any suggestions?
