turbo e36 m3 sedan

Recommended Posts

So yeah like the title says iv decided to go the turbo path not the angery cam stilghtly higher comp na one.

Therefore I now need a diferent list to the one i already have.

If anyone has some good ideas parts wise im open to sujestions and your comments would be very welcome.

The way i see it im never going to be able afford to run a full season in the open class and may as well build somthing faster and more fun at hill climbs and the odd all comers meet.

How much do you want to spend?

What is your power goal?

A good start to the list would be....

A turbo

turbo manifold ( CUSTOM!! dont buy any "off the shelf" RHD manifolds cause 9/10 times it wont work)

Intercooler + piping

BOV

Wastegate

Exhaust

Injectors

Standalone ECU

Fuel pump

Thicker HG

Upgraded head bolts

The sizes, dimensions and types of everything above

will be dictated by power goal vs wallet thickness

thanks for the input ben but the head gaskets not going thicker im only wanting 500 so lowering the comp is not really part of the plans head bolts is a good idea though that one wasnt on the list..

oh yeah 8psi on stock internals is a fairly big part of the build im not a millionare and around the 500 mark with no lagg sounds pretty good to me i built a very quick rex a few years back and the lag drove me nuts i dont want to comp to much on low down pull.

Im not a noob with this kind of stuff just a firm beliver that often others have good ideas and tricks that i might not have heard of yet.

all good stuff. thanks again for your input dude

plans so far are as follows

-finish reshaping and flaring guards

-nolathane all bushes

-adjustable sus ??? open to segestions here brand/model

-plastic weld the two factory m3 bumpers i have into one factory looking bumper that sits about 2" lower

-ali panel as much of the under belly as poss to give clean air flow to the F430 rear difuser thats getting grafted into the arse.

-remove mechanical power steering pump and replace with an electric MR2 item

-air con...history

-replace oil cooler with racing item and move to a safer place a bit further from the tarmac

-bin viscous fan and replace with twin electric items

-Brakes not sure what to do here i had a chat with michael sexton a few weeks back, he runs an e36 m3 in the targa and he said do the after market pedal box thing and bin the abs as he played around with the breaks by upgrading the calipers/rotors/fluid and pads while trying to retain the factory abs and it made the car very dangerous so i think im gonna have to spend a bit more here than i was planning.

-move oil pump to the power steering pump spot then ill have some real room for the compressor.

-change the sump and oil pick up to a s52 twin pick up (cant have oil starvation mid corner as i am planing on some pretty big slicks

so yeah thats why im not going power crazy i need a whole package its not gonna be no road car.

ill get some pics up soon of the progress so far,

its already been off the road for two years now

sounds like its going to be an interesting project.

Not a 100% on 500hp's with standard compression, but im sure you know what your

talking about. either way, the same rule applies to everyone who asks bout this subject,

power

reliablity

cost($)

now pick two

cheers M

That list is more or less a minimum requirement to turbo an S50/M50

At that boost level you can get away with out an upgraded HG

but if your going to do the head bolts you may as well do the HG.

If you only need tips ill make a list

Handy hints...

1. Oil feed for turbo.

Tee off the oil pressure sender at the back of the

oil filter housing.

2. Oil Return for turbo

Drill the sump there is pretty much no other

way around it.

You can feed it to the sump plug but don't,

cause its gay

3. Injectors

Most bosch injectors will fit your rail

Failing that you can use RB26 injectors

but they do need slight modification and a resistor pack

4. Turbo Manifolds

TRADEME MANIFOLDS DO NOT FIT!

LHD MANIFOLDS CAN NOT BE FLIPPED AND USED AS RHD TOP MOUNT!!

I had to modify mine beyond recognition to get it to fit

and is now a two piece bottom mount manifold.

When purchasing a top mount manifold make sure

the turbo flange sits forward, further than cyl # 1

pipe on the head flange. (Easier to get a custom one made)

5. ENGINE

Standard engine can be boosted but dont expect it to live

long if your thrashing it.

At a minimum upgrade the head studs and use a thicker HG.

Repco has a listing for a thicker OEM HG for an M50B25,

which lowers the CR to around 9.5:1

Im not sure if theres a similar listing for S50 but its worth

giving them a call

6. ECU

Don't f**k around GET A LINK or other standalone.

USA tuners make straight replacement chips for

turbo conversions but they are expensive (read. $300US+)

Thats all I can think of atm but Im sure others will add to it

if Ive missed anything

DISCLAIMER.

DONT BLAME ME IF YOUR sh*t BLOWS UP!!

Dont take this info as GOSPEL!!

This is just my opinions from my own experience

with the M50 turbo conversion!!

:D

You really want to send a PM to Matt "ecko_complex" or dig up his old threads.

He has spent lots of time and $$ turbo'n his M3 and I think it's still very much a work in progress. I hope you have deeeeeep pockets as there is a truck load of custom work to be done.

Having said that, once it is.. what a weapon :D!
