Finding suitable wheel for 2001 M530i E39

Recommended Posts

Looking for a suitable wheel with a balance of performance and looks for a driveaway price of approx 1.5K

I don't know if this is unrealistic. This will be my first set of aftermarket wheels. I have a fairly limited knowledge of sizing and everything but this is sort've what I'm looking for, don't know if it makes 100% sense but from my understanding it does ;)

For the Beyern Type Mesh:

Front: 18x8.5 w/ 1.25" lip

Rear: 18x9.5 w/ 3.0" lip

Would that look silly or do you think it would be all good?

Alternately, the Petrol Vengeance wheel.

Front: 18x8 w/ 1" lip

Rear: 18x9.5 w/ 2.5" lip

I think these cost around 2k a set?

You need a higher offset for 5 series. ET40 is a 3 series offset.

Others will chime in here but I think you need around ET25.

yeah et+20 - 25 would fit

you want to avoid spacers if possible

What size would be best? 18/19" ?

Some might disagree with me but I think if your going to bother with aftermarket I'd go with 18" as minimum and 19" being idea and maybe 20" if they are the right kind of wheels. But thats just me and depends on the look you are going for.

You are sort of correct, the lower the offset the further out they sit. 3 series run high offset and 5 series run low offset.

I agree 18's or 19's are the way to go.

@Zenetti,

What black/polished lip wheels can you supply/install on tyres 18" for approx 1-1.5K

19"s are the max you can run on these cars without upsetting the speedo and produce an false reading.

I run 275/35/19's - 19x9.5 +20et on all 4 corners on mine and she handles brillantly.

If you wanted to stay staggered you could get away with maybe +25 - + 30 in the rear, meaning more dish...

but you will need to stay close to the +20 in the front to clear your suspension.

Don't run spacers, change your stud pattern or change to a massively heavier wheel. these will all upset your handling and maybe even dangerous.

With the right wheel, E39's are the bomb.

check out the e39 love thread in showroom for what i mean...

This is incorrect :)

You can run 20's without upsetting the speedo and it does not produce false readings. The tyre however is a licorice strap (30 series)!, Personally, I think 20's are too big on these cars for NZ roads.

I presume you meant to say you are running a 275/30/19 as this is correct size, the 35 series in that size is more suited to E38 7 series.

The maximum I would run on the front is a 9" wide wheel. :)

Tristan, I will have a look and see what we have for you.

Yeah, pretty keen to run a staggered set up.

Thinking 18" wheels and +20et

EDIT:

Ok I'm pretty new to wheels and tyres and all but I've got a fair idea of it.

Would something like this suit/sound plausible?

Front: 18x8.5 w/ 1.25" lip

Rear: 18x9.5 w/ 3.0" lip

Would that look silly or do you think it would be all good?

The wheels I'm looking at are the Beyern Type Mesh - I've got no idea of the cost of these but yeah looking for something like that.

Alternately, the Petrol Vengeance wheel.

Front: 18x8 w/ 1" lip

Rear: 18x9.5 w/ 2.5" lip

yeah your gonna hit the same problem I did.

There's plenty of choice out there for a jap offset and stud pattern but when you ask for the same wheel in BMW offset and stud, they are either unavailable or the nearest equivalent are twice the price.

Sorry, yeah mine's 30 series tyres, and honestly you feel everything. I wouldn't go thinner than these, not on NZ roads.

I spend half my time scanning the road for tiny potholes.

You are on to it set up wise.

Just be aware that the Bayern Mesh has now been discontinued and the Petrol Vengeance you will be around $2k for the wheels only. Can you pop over and see us? We have few options in stock for you and can certainly give you an awesome deal!

Sweet as, I'll try pop in some time in the next few days otherwise the weekend!

Cheers.

EDIT:

@Zenetti - I was looking at your website and noticed you have the Versus MC04 (http://www.magandtyredirect.com/wheeldetail.php?rc=2872)

Priced at approx $1K? - Is that for the set or per wheel? And also if possible I'd like to run a staggered set up, most likely 9.5" rear, 8.5" front.

Thanks.

Worth a drive to Mag&tyre Direct, to be honest I was sceptical of the wheels judging by the photo’s on the site but seeing them up close I was very impressed with the quality and appearance. I like the Black BBS reps with the red time attack lip myself.

This may sound silly but have you accounted for decent tyres? A quality tyre is going to do a lot more than a cheap one fitted to a big wheel.
