190e Cosworth

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, anyone know Mercedes specialists in Hamilton that are familiar with 190e Cosworths?

Would like a pre-purchase done on one.

Cheers.

There's nothing special 'bout them, just take it to a Merc' specialist.

FYI It's not a "Cosworth", it has a Cosworth designed and Mercedes built head, the cars never had Cosworth anywhere on them so if it has Cosworth badges or stickers then some muppet has put them on.

Not directed at anyone but please stop calling them Cosworths. It amounts to the same thing as people putting M badges on a 318 auto'.

So what should this car be called?

Cosworth designed AND built the head on the 2.3. Your right in that they were never officially called cosworths, but that hasnt stopped most people calling them that since their inception.

Understand that 'Cosworth' is a colloquialism. People can use it as much as they like, and still agree that their car was sold and registered as a 190e 2.3 or 2.5 - 16.

Understand that people are proud of their cars, and often the engine fettling- so are compelled to put a small cosworth badge on the rear. Mercedes couldnt give a flying'.

Nonetheless you are right in suggesting a merc mechanic, they are the same as any other.

So does anyone know any Mercedes specialists in Hamilton?

Or are we going to just debate what to name a car 99% of us do not own?

Give either Doug a call from Robinsons or John from independant prestige, they are dealers but would know the best person in hamilton.

The problem you are going to have with this pre-purchase inspection, is finding someone that has worked on them. I worked on many of them years ago. They are high maintanence though and you have to know what you are doing. We rebuilt a couple of engines back in the late 80's, early 90's. Even changing the engine oil can drop you in the sh*t. Timing chains, valve gear and manifolds are the main issues. Llyod Marx in Hamilton was one of the best down there. He has since sold his business and I don't know how to get hold of him. You might be lucky and find someone in the dealership down there that is old enough to have worked on them and knows what to look for. You would also need to check the engine out hot & dead cold. Good luck... any more info....give me a call

You could also try 'Alex ten Hove', has a BMW yard in Frankton and used to race in the open class, he's of an age to know these cars. Goes under his full name on this forum, nice guy, may be able to help or point you in the right direction.
