E30 sr20de+t on a budget

Recommended Posts

Thought it was probably time... I have been playing with this as time, weather and funds allow over the last 6 months. Have been fortunate enough to have a lot of help from mates and people in the industry... Im getting pretty close to running now so will try to update as we go.

So far I started with a cheap sa 1990 325i auto. First weekend we pulled the motor and box out. From there i ordered some mounts from ebay, no surprise they needed more work to use than would have been involved in making custom ones. Bought a sr20de+t manual off a mate. Got mp auto parts to make a custom 6 puk clutch and put it together.

I wanted to do a 5 stud swap for a few reasons. 1. Front struts didn't need welding so easier to source, future proof, didn't need the expertise to fit, more cheap wheel options and better brakes. I used e36 328 front hud, caliper and discs, e36 m3 evo front arms, offset control arm bushes on the front, e36 318ti trailing arms and brakes with e30 subframe with camber and toe tabs, nolathane bushes e30 325 lsd and axles. I also used a AKG raised subframe bush kit to bring the alignment specs back to as close to standard as possible with the car lowered. Any additinal adjustments can be made by the eccentric bolts. Picked up a set of 15"n5 stud weaves cheap and put them on to sit the car on for now. Have actually grown to really like them and the fitment is great. For the suspension i have gone with yellowspeed adjustables, they made them in the configuration i wanted with the specs I wanted and within budget. It all bolted up as it should and feels good and looks good. Quality of the components is very good for the price, the only thing i might need to change is front spring rate as they are a little bit heavy for the little 4 cyl.

Next up we test fitted motor and worked out what needed changing. Pretty quickly realised the brake booster setup wouldn't fit. Went to pick a part with original setup and looked at everything to find similar bore, throw etc with a smaller booster. Turns out ae101 levin is pretty similar apart from bolt spacing being wider. Grabbed the setup from a levin and cut a plate and welded it to the e30 bracket.

Next up was pedal box, easy enough but very fiddly job. Especially when there isn't enough space in the driveway to open the doors.

This all fitted up we bled brakes and clutch with no issues.

The last few weeks i have been fiddling with the pipe work for intercooler and radiator etc. Its getting close and all sitting in place ready for it to go into the shop for welding.

The speedo had also done the common gear failure thing so i have a gear set to put in it.

Ordered a link g4 storm plus which is getting wired in the very near future.

Anyway thats pretty much where im upto. Hope it hasnt bored people to much and will try to keep this a bit more updated from now.

More progress today. Finished up a heap of small jobs. Throttle cable and bracket, rad hoses, intake pipe, painted exhaust, fuel lines and some brackets and bits to tidy it up

Just put a garagistic odo repair kit in my speedo, here's the pictures of what came out and what went in... 5 min job and the shipping was quick enough i didn't get around to chasing it. The website i got it off is probably well known but here's a link anyway http://garagistic.com/index.php

Cheers guys, its a sr20de+t running a t28 off a s15. Not going for huge power on this motor. Planning on around 200rwkw but very responsive. Very little progress today, touched up and assembled driveshaft and mounted boost solenoid.

Like the ECU wiring.

Will have to book mark for when I get there (again).

So have you had it tuned? or just DiY road tuning it?

Still keen to come for a perv at some stage.

Cheers, The panel and paint is pretty(very) rough so I will plan something for after the car is on the road, but want to keep it looking as sleeper as possible.

Have had a tune done as it sits with no mods to the engine and was 175kw at the rear wheels.

To get any more I need to expose the intercooler more and have it make more noise.... or upgrade parts, not things I want to do at the moment.

When suits you to have a look? PM me you number and I will flick you a text

Sorry for the quality its taken on a phone. Also acquired a set of Smiley's so spent the morning cleaning up the headlight and front body wiring and installing the new lights.

Haven't updated for a while but not alot has changed... We spent a weekend doing driveshaft loops and the last few bits for cert. Now just waiting for opportunity to get the car in. In the mean time i picked up a fibreglass mtech 2 replica kit, knowing it would need alot of work to fit I started today. Front wasn't to bad but left a gap on either side so i pulled out the glassing kit and had a play, heres a preview, will put up more as i go.

Well done. The sr20de will handle whatever you throw at it. Have seen multiple examples of the stock engine boosted and running 280kw daily. Make sure you have a good tune and fuel and you'll be fine!

Sun finally came out and gave me a chance to start on the rear bumper. Tow bar removed and rear test fitted, looks like a few more nights glassing and sanding to get a good fit but nowhere near as far off as I thought it would be. Skirts are going to be the challenge.

Wowsers, that front moulding is low. With it being fibreglass you're gonna have to be super careful.

Check to see if at that height you can get your car from the road to the driveway. Remember the kits are only around 1" lower than the standard, but around 2" more forward. Its the forward part that'll get you in trouble.

I've got the same problem with my tech1, can't mount it as I won't be able to get into my driveway!

Edit: had it all mock-fitted before I did a sanity check and realised I wouldn't be able to back the car out if I went ahead and screwed things on.
