I standby the Alfa 159 3.2 - When I drove one it was a blast. 3 pedals combined with a nice exhaust.. mmmm Start at $16.5 asking on TM for a Mk1 (Mk4 Golf) and $20k for a Mk 2 (Mk5 Golf) and I'm positive you can get those down. A low mileage Mk1 NZ new car sold last year for mid-high teens. An S55 Kompressor will start at $25ish if you shop around, non kompressor, high teens. If so, sure an Alfa is an affordable car :-P Well, initial outlay is the largest (hopefully ) financial commitment at once. After purchase, you'd hope that servicing wouldn't be more than $1K at a time. Start at $16.5 asking on TM for a Mk1 (Mk4 Golf) and $20k for a Mk 2 (Mk5 Golf) and I'm positive you can get those down. As I pointed out, one with low kms (around 80 from memory) sold for same or less. It's a fairly simple car, large motor, manual (in the earlier ones), not much else. I'd have a manual Mk2 with over 100kms for the wife, just for the exhaust note if they were priced right. People are happy to but an M5/M3 or whatever with 150kms plus, so why not this? My Cappuccino was better, as it revved SO much higher (though I only ever got a bit over 8), but not "relatively common" - last I knew there were 32 registered in NZ, and the guy who brought mine has 4! Also, my very first BMW was a pfl E30 320, the baffles in the muffler had all collapsed and it sounded gnarly as. You could always go to repco and put a cannon on the Corolla yo... The 88 - 92 vr4's sound pretty angry with 2.5" straight piping from the turbo. Problem is they're all clapped out now. Molested and riding on bump stops. Any cosworth engine. (Sierra or Escort) Pretty much any V8 AMG. Even the newer ones with the turbos.
