Are confusing number plates legal?

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few of these type plates around over the past while:

MWMNM

MWWMW
VMWMW

etc. etc.

It captured my curiosity as it's obviously designed to be confusing, but still "allowed" to be manufactured and licensed by Plates.co.nz

I recall seeing somewhere that it isn't legal (NZTA?) but can't seem to find it anywhere so I may be imagining it!

Can anyone shed light?

I read an article awhile back that Police were taking a dimm line on this and requesting the plates be cancelled.

Ltnz were cancelling these a while back

Also plates that can be installed upside down and look ok but wrong.

Not sure if you get a free personalised plate with that though

I'd doubt that you would.

If i was allowed to buy a 900 dollar plate and then they took it back i would expect a replacement. Seems like it should fit under standard recall stamdadds under consumer gaurentees act.

Bit off topic mind you

^^ Then you should read the limitation of liability clause in their terms of sale.

im not a contract lawyer by any means, but a government act like the consumer gaurentees act (now called the commerce act) takes priority over any businesses terms of sale, i actually have personal experience of just that.

anyways. doesnt affect me so yeah. ha.

You are correct. You can't contract out of the Consumer Gaurentees act.

Many retail stores try this and get caught out all the time. Most just hope the person affected doesn't bother.

I don't see why. If you really needed to find it and at least knew the colour of the car you could say "the number was something like..." and they could match it. Even more quickly if you knew the make/model of the car.

Same thing between 0 and O.
