Cheap E39 M5

Recommended Posts

If someone wants one, Buy it, buy a warranty with good cover amount, IF it runs a bearing it's not going to leave you out of pocket.

Haha I did that. Still out of pocket, however with S65.

Agreed, if you let it throw a leg.

If you rectify it before then I would say $5k would cover the job. You can buy a warranty for pretty much anything. I did the research with this car in mind. You don't need to fail in a cloud of smoke for a warranty to pay out.

The asking price is still optimistic, but I'm sure he would be heavily negotiable after you guys put the fear up him of a blown motor! Sub $20k and it's worth a punt in my mind.

Would a warranty cover conrod bearings, which are technically a wear and tear item though...

I'm putting it out there that this M5's current (and possibly previous) owner doesn't know this.

There may also be more serious problems lurking within this M5. We only started the engine, rev'd it lightly, heard the clak clak clak and ran away from it. If just the rod bearings need replacing, then 15k is a fair price imo. if it were me buying it, i'd take the engine out, do the rod bearings, chain guides, vanos seals, clutch gaskets etc and the motor will be good for another 200k.

Would a mechanical warranty require a PPI? If so, if its that bad a PPI would pick up on it and insurance would deny coverage anyway

Not sure, probably not if it has a current WOF.

Wofs dont cover mechanical items. The insurer needs to know the car is mechanically sound before they will put cover on it.

You usually sign to say the car is in OK condition when you buy the warranty.

Places like insurance and warratny companies don't much like fraud.

You arent going to get a mechanical warranty on an E39 M5.

You can, the cover price will justify not buing the car though.

Was this the silverstone car with the damaged boot lid? New reg is HHU826. Around Parnell a lot

Can't remember the rego but definitely Silverstone, in Parnell and dented boot lid, so more than likely the same one. Didn't sell at his $21K asking price... Maybe he'll accept my $15K offer. haha!
