You can buy a warranty for pretty much anything. I did the research with this car in mind. You don't need to fail in a cloud of smoke for a warranty to pay out. The asking price is still optimistic, but I'm sure he would be heavily negotiable after you guys put the fear up him of a blown motor! Sub $20k and it's worth a punt in my mind. We only started the engine, rev'd it lightly, heard the clak clak clak and ran away from it. If just the rod bearings need replacing, then 15k is a fair price imo. if it were me buying it, i'd take the engine out, do the rod bearings, chain guides, vanos seals, clutch gaskets etc and the motor will be good for another 200k.
