Check the overflow line to the expansion tank is clear, had similar symptoms on an E30 many years was blocked at the outlet on the side tank.

Don't know how different the E36 is, but may be a cheap check?

Checked that. Doesnt flow as much water at idle that my old 540i but it is clear and bleeding water back into the expansion chamber.

Wow. I had just gotten to convincing Dad to let me fix this one up (we already have way too many BMWs) only to find it sold already. Hard to beat a good deal like this, I'm sure it will bring a smile to the new owners face! =)

because Andy didnt see it!

and i got a 2.8 that could have gone in it too.

from my skim read sounds like radiator a bit blocked up and/or coolant to water mix not correct.
