New mod for the CSL

Recommended Posts

okay not really a build thread or showroom thread worthy, but I really wanted to post this just to get on the nerves of the 3 pedal brigade on the forums haha ... jokes : P

My latest (completely pointless and useless) mod - just because.

Actually the purpose of this thread is to see if anyone has the ability to scan and reproduce this for the masses in NZ.

It's just the knob/boot combo that makes the lever look longer, right?

Also is that a generic rubber mat?

Registering interest :)

Interested. Is it something that could be 3D printed?

It's the same overall height as the stock SMG gearknob. Just the angle of the photo I think and the fact that the stock boot is quite short thus giving the impression it is quite high. In actual fact it isn't.

Yep, a Repco rubber mat I cut up into the same shape as the stock ones LOL.

Probably not, but if there was a CAD done then I am sure it could be CNC'd? Haha I have no idea how rubber components are produced. I suppose if done on the cheap you could technically scan the thing, flip it and create a 3D printed mould, and inject it with windscreen silicon haha! It's just a rubber ball really.

The only question that matters: how much weight does it save?

None ... it adds weight being rubber (vs plastic stock item) : P I am taking the "L" out of the CSL. But I have some titanium screws to go back into the car so hopefully that counters the weight gain!!

This could be knocked up in cad with ease, just need some basic dimensions. A good manufacturing process would be the interesting bit. Looks nice with the polish in the dimples

If someone wants to model one up in cad, I'll throw it on my 3d printer and see what happens.

Can do the cad.

Will need

- overall diameter

-Dimple diameter

-Dimple count per circular ring

-shifter stalk diameter at threads assuming it has some

That will get a "close enough" prototype.

If you do, is it easy enough to do an outer shell / mold? Then I could print sacrificial mould, that could be filled with resin or some other material, the the mold could be destroyed /removed.

Yeah no problem.

How we usually do it is create a part with the surface finish required. Suspend or support it on pins in a mold and cast silicone around it. Split the silicone into halves to leave a cavity in which you mold the part. Can do as you say but the desired surface finish may be harder to achieve.

Either way the cad is easy enough. Can give you both models. Will have a play tomorrow to see what I can come up with.

Overall diameter is 50.1mm (East West) - 48.4mm North South (bottom part where the stalk hole is has a slight flattening surface)

Dimple diameter is 7mm

Dimple depth 1mm

Dimple count from top to bottom

1, 6, 12, 14, 14, 12

Shift stalk ID 12.36mm

Had a look at it over lunch. Not perfect but close. PM your email for the model. Will do an external mold next.

Very cool!! Can I buy one haha

By the way, just in case anyone is wondering, the official Motorsport one is NLA, so it has ceased production.

You can, but I need to get it printing a bit better first.

You guys are hardcore, going to all the trouble of doing this gearknob

I love it.

If you recessed the top so I could put my standard 5 speed manual gear-knob badge on and have it screw down like factory I would be in.

NZ made is cool

Keep up the good work!
