Steering wheel refurbishment

Recommended Posts

Is this a 'thing'? Has anyone done it?

The steering wheel in our E46 is looking a little worn. I don't think it is necessarily the common issue due to the driver wearing rings... Just worn. Is it possible to refinish it, preferably as a DIY?

Our wheel should look something like this:

Sadly, it doesn't. The finish has worn through in a few places. Not disastrously so, but enough so the rim is no longer smooth or shiny in affected areas.

Take a scrubbing dishwashing thinggy, not the metal ones, the hard fiber ones, use lots of soap and scrum the crap out of the wheel, rub some good cloth washing agent and let it dry and then scrub it some more and then take a damn rag and wipe it clean, should be a 30 min task every few months, keep the wheel soft and brings back the leather feel instead of that shine slippery feel you have over time.

Unfortunately this isn't a shiny slippery feel... This is a 400000km+, worn out and little surface left, kind of feel! :)

Sandpaper? 600 grit to 2000 to finish off? :)

have plenty of good low km replacements .

some on the rack , and some still in the cars .

at BMWORLD

I just had a mtec 2 e30/e28 steering wheel recovered recently and cost me about $350 .

only bothered as it was the smaller size one

was the suede type and had gone all yuk , replaced with black leather

$350's a good price for a recover in NZ. Mind if I ask who did it for you, Brent?

I bought a refurbished E30 M3 one, Brent, but somewhere down the track I want to do some interior mods. Thanks for the link.

Was this the one fitted? I thought it seemed rather nice :)

Yep. It's a lovely little thing and much nicer than the stock wheel...

Original was 385mm, the mtech II is 365 or 370mm. Doesn't seem like much of a difference but it's all about the feels.... And it feels way better!
