It's just a poverty pack auto shitter with a sub in the back, reliability is NOT a SUBaru strongpoint

$1.95 would be a fair price

I've owned it for 18 months. I've only needed to reco the starter as it would not engage intermittently. It's passed every wof (at a subaru specialist).

I have thoroughly cleaned it so no fluff or dog smells. If anyones keen you won't be disappointed at the tidyness of the interior.

i would say $1900 is a good starting price. i think the best thing about subaru's is that they are common and parts are plentiful (thus cheap)

easy to fix and get stuff from pick a part etc

would be a great daily/work car i would think

Bullshit, the non-turbo engines (excluding the EJ25) are very reliable if looked after.

Looks like a good commuter car and pretty cheap. Shame its not Manuel, know someone that wouldve been interested.

The most reliable cars I had have been Subarus. Highest milage was only about 380K from memory...

I had 330k km on my 91 Legacy GT Wagon, EJ20T manual. First engine, first gearbox, first turbo. Drove well until it got stolen and blown up. :<
Was owned by mother from 30,000km and me from 300,000km.
Very reliable if looked after.

Even the turbo ones are reliable if well looked after...

My GTR racecar broke something on almost every outing. Mostly due to too much power.

Yet my mates v5 WRX with a standard RA spec block and just bolt on's we did in his garage never broke down once.

Like anything performance, they get a rep from badily maintained, hard driven, badily modified crowd.

Yes the EJ has some weak points... but no-where near as many as a RB does!

like the spanish humour, not to rain on the parade, but most are selective samples of 1 - we can all find these.

My sample is 3 x 2

Subaru

1990 RS bought it at 120,000 sold it at 130,000 no probs - it was the wifes car

1990 GT bought it at 89,000 sold it at 185,000 - new suspension, new brakes 4 times, new engine bearings once, new engine (RA spec), new turbo once , new clutch once , monthly rocker cover gaskets.

1996 GTB bought it at 74,000 sold it at 124,000 - new suspension 5 times, new gearbox, constant oil leaks, mothly rocker cover gaskets, new brakes 3 times new clutch. $9 grand in big bills in 18 months and dropped $16,000 in value. Cost of ownership $16,000 per annum - ignoring operating costs ( Brakes , tyres, fuel)

BMW

1995 328 bought it at 29,000 k still driving it at 245,000 - no work apart from regular maintenance and suspension rebuild once. still on original clutch. Dropped $20,000 in value in 14 years - thats $1,428 per annum

1996 528 bought it a 134,000 sold it at 298,000 - normal maintenance only was still on original clutch ( Que??)

2004 X5 bought it at 136,000 now at 285,000 new clutch because relase bearing was noisy, new turbo, suspension upgrade to H&R and Bilstein

Ive owned six subarus. Two had receipts for previous engine rebuilds (one due to neglect, it had an oil leak and ran low. The other due to forged internals for power increase). All but one had over 200,000km when i sold them. Only one had an issue in my ownership, and that was a worn suspension bush needing replacement for WOF.

My 523i and M3 had a vanos rebuild. My E36 323i shat an auto trans. My E46 323i stranded me when the intake piping decided it wanted to come apart.

Most of your repairs sound like either user error, bad installs or bad parts fitted.

One of my Legacy GTBs had over 300hp atw, with standard bilstein stocks and brakes. didnt leak anything, handled and stopped well. I was involved in the Subaru scene for years, never seen anyone have the amount of issues you claim to have.

Why do you have a problem with everything and then think your opinion is the be all end all?

definitely sounds like poor installation and/or incorrect parts as Kelvin said. No production car on earth no matter how bad requires a suspension overhaul every 10,000km

Funny, I've had a few too, and also had the engines in VW's.

The company one 92 Legacy VZ from 40K to 380K needed: a radiator - it blew the side tank, and I din't notice - I drove it a considerable distance, and when I got home, the coolant had evapourated down to JUST the coolant additve, right down the side of the car, and when it cooled, I put 5.5L water in. Figuring it was rooted, I drove it to work the next day, and had it looked at - needed just the radiator! the alternator died one day (dry joints), but go SO hot from the fault the solder melted and fixed itself :-) Never had it looked at. Auto trans stuck in 3rd. Had a manual conversion done. Engine ran out of oil... because of a crack in the oil pump housing... was on the way home from the panel beaters after a frontal collision when my boss was driving. It was impact damage, and replaced under insurance... still no issues. This this used to get caned all the time, even from cold. It's what it was for - a workhorse.

Mrs W's 95 Impreza: Brought at 288kms with one owner and a full history printout from import at 77K. Worst repair was diff seals, and it was really maintainance, as they were weeping. The guy we got it off never had a breakdown and just had it serviced 6 monthly. I swapped the engine and trans, because I had better ones (with a manual box!) and had no problems except a missfire (dodgy plug) until 320+ K, when the fuel pump died - it didn't technically leave my Mrs stranded... it was running, but low on power - I told her to turn it off, then it wouldn't start :-( Also, failed 2 WOFs in its life in NZ - one I left an exhaust clamp loose, the other - Mrs toore off the front swy bar mount camping :-)

Also had a 95 Legacy manual, first NZ owner had it from 22K to 220K when I brought it with a poked clutch and rocker cover gaskets. Fixed it up and was a good car, until I sold it and it demolished a caldina wagon. Rocker cover gaskets done previously by original owners, so required twice in 220+ kms. Averages out less than the E39!

The others, Either I brought as basket cases, for were purely for stripping. Hell the EJ25 in my VW Van used to haul close to 3 tonnes happily.

And anybody who thinks any "Dealer" is the be all and end all of servicing is SADLY mistaken! Regardless of make. They're variable, at best. Just like Independents!
