My E38 740i Sunday Spruceup

Recommended Posts

Well my Sunday Driver got collected today.

A 2000 E38 740i, NZ New 205ks

Got it ex Turners for $2400. Using this as a bit of a track on the progress.

Initially mechanics look pretty good, drives really well, no clunks or anything.

Good service records.

Interior is pretty filthy though and everything not done in a service hasn't been touched, like cabin air filters.

Little stuff like having a Kabab stick, yes that's right, stuffed down the wiper blade to hold it in.

The grill on the bonnet I found had no fixings in it when changing the blades, all lazy stuff

Lots to tidy up, again looks stored outside and needs a Real good compound and polish etc to clean up.

Mmmm these cars are always dying for a good clean up

Will take years off the age once you've finished a good bit of TLC.

Interior clean up about done,

Full leather clean, done - pics are crap lol

Full detail inside, done - man this thing looks 5 yrs old not over 15

Found oil leak , em oh well had to be something wrong. Further investigation this week.

Cleaned boot and around boot, filthy full of leaves, Pollen buildup and sh*t

Left mirror replaced

Wipers replaced

Cabin filters replaced

Memory seat unit replaced - thanks Dave

Mud flaps removed, hideous things

General clean and then a full going over with the clay bar, ready for compound and polish

Gotta love those clay bars, paints come up super smooth

Still gotta check oil leak, not that bad though, and after filling washers I've sprung a leak, further look into that tomorrow

Very cool, pimp interior.

Im guessing a 740i would have been $140k new? And someone fixes it with a kebab skewer :D

Yip, sad but true.

Funny mechanically though it's always been serviced , which is great.

Probably some you tube solution lol

Love the E38s interior its one of the best. Not fussy and over detailed like the interiors today.

I'm always amazed the improvements which can be made by a good cleaning and polish.

I hope that the kebab stick was at least from a reputable aftermarket manufacturer if not OEM BMW.

Got to the bottom of the leaking washer fluid, seems the aftermarket mud flaps from PO was using the tank as a great place to screw into, hence hole, lol

Easy fix anyway, had a clean up while in there

Buffed the windows up as well, got rid of most of the water marks which is nice :)

Will bring it up for the next meet in October.

Bahahaha!

On my Suzuki Cappuccino, the VIN plate had been pop riveted through the firewall, into the washer tank... but you could SEE it was there... retards!

Still, at least now you can wash all the crap out from behind the liners B)

Looks like you've got a nice shine going on the 740 Brent.

I used Meguiars Ultimate Black restorer on the door trim and black on the bumpers and it worked wonders,.

Cheers Dave, yeah getting there, haven't reached the trim yet LOL. I seem to end up using Maguiars for most things funny enough

Given her a good compund and pre wax polish, still needs a wax so should shine up some more yet, might get some on later today

Parking the 3 cars really shows how much sharper looking the BMWs were than that era of Mercedes.

With a quick glance the E500 could be a Ssanyong or Hyundai :P

I think I've located the leak/ a leak, looks on top back left cover, the under side and general engine bay was so filthy with built up debris I had to clean it twice. Makes a huge difference after a good degrease. there may be another at the back or it could be running from here not entirely sure. Tranny and steering fluid are good though, I think the power steering hoses just needed tightening, no leaks since then

Proceeded with a kidney transplant that I've had a couple of weeks waiting. Old ones where obviously broken and PO had silicon the crap out of them to hold them.

Took over 90mins of scraping and rubbing to get it all off. Happy with the tidy up :) after I'd straightened them up ;)

Thanks Russell, Yeah I'm pretty amazed by it myself, specially with 207ks on it now. Got a good one, even with a few leaks

The new grills are awesome. Very tidy. I need to get a set of these myself.

Is that oil leak coming from the rocker cover gasket?
