Totally agree the charges are a rort, but equally some of the money people pay for plates is just loopy $100k for a plate? However the restriction on licenced suppliers and second sourced plates is to prevent duplication, the usual arguments are trotted out in the article , there are more. Some of them are overstated but it is quite simple: one vehicle, one plate in a single register. You want new plates, you hand over the old ones- its a secure register not a novelty shop. I've always felt the monopoly plates have is an absurdity and really shows up a lot of issues in NZs niche consumer market. They wonder why people buy stuff online rather than locally - overprice goods and a lack of selection. Nothing will change when they enforce GST either. If you get your normal govt issued ABC123 plate changed to a euro version of the ABC123 plate (for $400 or so dollars), do you need to surrender the normal style plates? Same with a reprint on a different style. I have done both. Im not arguing that there should be one governing body to control the issue of plates, but once you own your plate you should be able to pay whoever you want to make your plates, in whatever style meets the criteria set by the governing body. You only hand in plates when the registration of the car is changing as you said. These guys are not changing their registration number. They are copying their plate for the purpose of enhancing aesthetics. The original plates are stored and still registered to the motor vehicle. Only an idiot would run them on another vehicle creating a duplicate on the road. Though I do know of some people that did this for an extended period of time. Only takes a few to ruin it for the majority. This topic has come up a number of times in the past though. If you live in Albany beware of a pom cop who will remove the plates from your car. He gets very angry when you query his logic that you could use the plates that are registered to your car to steal fuel from gas stations.... Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Not sure there are many people who believe they should be able to have whatever they want (any colour or size). But that is expected from a monopolistic organisation such as plates.co.nz I don't see what the police are doing as revenue gathering. They would spend more in fuel per week than they would each bring in with $200 fines for plates. But they are pretty much working to protect the monopoly that is plates.co.nz. If they mean to or not. It can't be, plates get stolen all the time. The reality is, and everybody knows it, if we could buy legit plates in NZ for the same costs as we can get excellent reproductions from overseas then we would buy them locally. When the cops publish statistics on the number of actual problems reproductions cause then we can have a meaningful discussions. Until then it's all moot. hybrid 1039 Report post Posted November 23, 2015 About 5 years a go we (bimmersport (Graham and Ollie) wrote to the government and looked at becoming a legal plates reseller. The government replied back and were open to the idea and put out a tender. The cost of setup of systems and integration into the backend systems as well as secure data soverinvty was the issue. It was going to cost a lot of money we didnt have to setup.Also the payback on profit from selling plate for $150 was going to take too long. It would of been hell popular again. I actually think personalised plates can stay with plates.co.nz but euro plates with normal government letters should be kept in the realm of NZ government liciencing system. And yes maybe you pay a little bit more ($50) for a euro plate with various end colours. So yes its a monopoloy .. however it is challenagible and the government are open to it. antil33t 90 Report post Posted November 26, 2015 I have a set of upgraded plates, and i've had 3 sets of fake plates... and been fined once by a parking warden parked infront of a house.... Upgraded plates are worth it IMO for the simple fact you can keep them forever. Normal NZ font and size but 100% an adhesive decal, absolutely no aluminium. Can't attest to its reflective qualities as it was the middle of the day. But WTF?
