E91 Towbar Relay DIY

Recommended Posts

Hi all

My dad wants to DIY his own towbar and wiring on the E91.

He showed me this:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/parts-other-makes/electrics/auction-990792652.htm

and found a guide to do it as well

My question is:

will this cause any problems for the car/malfunction etc? also, how about in the event of an accident, will insurance (AA insurance) have a problem with it and refuse to pay out? any advice or help appreciated.

This is obviously going to be a lot cheaper than forking out $1-2k or whatever it costs for some 'professional' place to do it for you.

No experience with that particular unit but it looks the same/similar to any other trailer module.

Will not cause any issue to the car nor have any effect on insurance etc.

The genuine modules are more complex - turning off rear PDC etc when trailer is connected.

If you can parallel import the genuine wiring harness you will save yourself alot of grief and money. I can say from experience that those cheap aftermarket harnesses work poorly with the canbus multiplexed systems and will cause disruptions to your diagnostics and light operation etc. I don't have enough fingers to count the times I've removed aftermarket wiring to replace with genuine after customer complaints. Save yourself the hassle.

Look up someone like all euro parts, speed nz or even bm workshop. Failing those ebay is usually a cheap source for oe parts.
