Sweet, I'll see if it's still there - the one on both my cars has faded out due to the harsh sun from when I was in Wellington!

The sort of owner who leaves a BMW behind doesn't strike me as the sort of responsible caring type who gets it serviced reguarly.

Maybe he's in the boot?

Hope his kidneys are still good, they're worth a bit.

Just got the final word from the Police - car's owner no longer contactable. Vehicle is yours to do what you wish.

So I guess beers at mine once it's running?

Now begins the amazing journey of learning how to E65... which sucks because I still haven't found a flat with decent workshop space, It's going to suck paying to do all the silly works I normally do myself. At least the car itself wasn't a cost (I speak too soon - it's probably going to be a complete PITA)

keen for photos and details of car. Love a good "barn find" story, even if its a mid/late model BMW

Try Deon Taylor, cheaper than a taxi and he takes your car. I've used him several times now and he's been good.

Long overdue update - things got busy at work so I didn't have time to be throwing time and money at dead E65's. Just got good news (ish) Botany BM Workshop confirmed that the plate matches a vehicle that came in to their shop 4 years ago thus pairing the reg#on the car to a service sticker on the window meaning despite all the other evidence adding up to this car being "genuine" and not cloned I'm now 100% confident that the body matches the plate & if I order a key it will work.

That's the next pain - BMW want $650 for a key and $150 for EWS encoding. Yowch!! Anyone know of an alternate key supplier & encoding other than BMW direct!

So far these are my facts:

No service for 4 years

Sitting for at least 2 years

Has done about 170k km's @ an average of 100km's a day for the last 4-6 years of it's life

it was abandoned

Not stolen or vehicle of interest (police confirmed)

No money owing (securities register)

How good ya think the engine will be? I'm expecting it's shot myself. $1000 for new battery & key seem a bit of a high gamble if it's toast. Thoughts?

Worth a go for $1000. Even if it's a dud you'd get that back selling it as is.

We started an old Merc - 240D - that had sat under a tree for 12 years. Flush the fuel lines, new fuel, and it fired 3rd or 4th turn. Diesels can be nice like that.

I'm not sure how the transponder keys are copied. BMW should have access to the codes for a specific vehicle, something 3rd parties may not have, but Lockmasters claim they can 'create' a key for you on site:

"If you've got a late model car, chances are that the key has a computer chip in it called a transponder. You may think you need to see a car dealership to order one of these specialised keys but the truth is, often they get them from us.

We can create transponder keys directly from our mobile locksmith vans which means you can receive your key right when you need it most and don't have to wait for an overseas order."

Give them, or a similar company, a call.

Battery - borrow one to see if the car will start.

I thought this had been a bit quiet.

He's been detained for questioning, the police aren't accept his explanation, in their view this story of getting a free car is just an elaborate hoax and he was in fact there to collect the drugs/cash/jewellery. allegedly.
