Fuel Gauge stuck on empty

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I have an E36 328 Coupe & have had this happen a few times now, so after filling up, the gauge stays on empty, when the vehicle is started & stays like it!!

I did a little bit of research & found that it is caused by having the ignition key on when filling up, the other forum I found it on, recommends to remove the key when filling up & the remedy is to remove fuses 31 & 46 with the key removed

So I did this yesterday & has fixed the gauge fault, I thought it was the fuel sender, but no!!

So google is your friend, I even priced up another sender

Have any of you guys encountered this??

Barry

The fuel gauge on our 318i regularly says empty when we start up in the morning.

Flicking the fascia above the needle sorts it. It's called character. :)

Lol that's called a needle that's bent/warped over time and heat.... it'll be catching on something. Common problem with a lot of cars. Changing the needle will fix that.

wives 328i had two issues which also gave empty fuel light on issues.

1, wire had broken off from fuel sensor (soldered back on with the usual precautions take when working around fuel tanks)

2. A section of wire under rear seat had become damaged and needed replacement ( not obvious to the eye)
