E46 316Ti to 330ti swap , shopping trolly to track car :)

Recommended Posts

just been working on this car for the last 3 days

brought a sleightly damaged 2002 E46 316ti a few months back

real grotty car , damaged front , easy to repair job.

was originally just going to fix and sell on

but then decided since I don't have a track car anymore

thought I would make one up

have the option of a S54 m3 engine to go in it

but have decided to use the more plentiful cheaper and lighter m54b30 engine

with a 5spd zf box and a brand new stage 2 supercharger kit I had brought a while back off a customer who never fitted it.

have made a few videos of the progress if you are real bored of watching shortland street etc

some pics here too .

Nice project keep the videos coming. What power are you looking to get of it with the supercharger?

+1.  excellent project Brent, and the vidjos are a wealth of info.  Keep it up!

I reckon one of these would be enough to keep me entertained on the track for years, never mind the supercharger.  Wouldn't claim to have the talent for that much power #; )

Interested to know what you did with the alternator and the air con wiring ?
Are you going to carry out the reinforcement of the chassis/ sub frame mount points prevent it tearing it's self apart

Are the M sport wheels for sale in photo 24.

What brake set up did you use on the rear

alternator works fine just std plug and play stuff there .

still need to sort the ac pump wire .

not aware of subframe issues on these models??

msport wheels from the other parts car have sold long ago .

will be using 330i brakes all around  , or maybe with m3 fronts ?

Needed to run an extra wire from the alternator to the cluster when i did the conversion on mine. The n42 wiring only had the 0ne blue wire and the charge light would not go out.So i ran another a pale green with blue trace is what the wiring diagrams showed. This was for 2002 nz new 316 compact with a N42 b18 engine.

The wiring for the a/c compressor I found was not long enough to reach the new position. The n42,46 is on the left side of the motor while on the right for the M54. By stripping the wiring back as far as i could and re-routing it..It still needed to be lengthened.

That is interesting to know about the rear subframe / body issues.

Will you be trying for a coupe look since you don't like the compact style?

It's going to be a rocket ship by the time your done with it. If your making a track car why are you keeping A/C?

As for brakes I would go m3 at the front with 400 odd Hp. 😀

couple of small update videos with some pics at the end of them

z4 rear muffler is fitted.

manual coding done (thanks to joe )

swapped out the suspension , brakes , diff ,axles , driveshaft etc to 330i , msport stuff

so has a 3.38 330i automatic diff ratio , 330i manual driveshaft

330ci msport front struts ,msport sway bars

mpsort rear springs(off something ??)  and msport  rear shocks

330i rear trailing arms ,axles etc

fitted some msport 17" by 8.5" alloys with 245/40-17" semi slicks (sort of)

booked in for a wheel alignment next week

gotta recode the asc module as original unit had a intermittent fault so was swapped out for another.
