Muffler Options M52B28

Checking out mufflers for a M52, wanting one that just makes the 6 cylinder sound amazing thats easy enough to get a hold of in this country. What has everyone got, what does everyone prefer?

you only heard it idling and gentle revving up to 1500rpm!  If it's "sound like a tractor ™"  or "sound like an RB30 with fart cannon", you can probably acheive that sophisticated sound with the following:

  • a grinder
  • drill
  • mig welder

Please read the following contraindications before removing the innards of your exhaust:

Contraindications may include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • May be tiresome on a trip through resonanse droning
  • May attract the attention of the constabulary
  • May  cause you problems with WoFs
  • May cause you to fall out with your neighbours
  • You may experience halucinations (such as you are being followed by a Nissan Skyline)

Haha okay okay. Admittedly not a good idea to have it sounding like a fart cannon or blaring while going 100. I need a good muffler not a straight pipe jobby. Whats good?

What are you running on your e30/M52 currently?

Perhaps worth starting with a used OEM unit from one of our forum sponsors such as Brent at BM World, or Ray at Hell BM.  They may have something aftermarket that'll suit too...

Ive almost finished making the exhaust up straight through to the back was just going to whack a nice muffler on the end of it and call it good. I've got an OEM muffler sat there and the catalytic converters but that stuff is ridiculously heavy not to mention unnecessary? Was going to bin the cats and old muffler and have a straight through to muffler on the end of it. 

Could I get a nice deep tone but not go sh*t sounding boy racer with a nice muffler? First time I've dabbled with an exhaust so I just want it to sound really nice is all. I think I liked the one in that video I linked because it sounds quite audible and different. Hard to explain sounds.

I like that.  Sounds like (no pun intended) you should just hunt out a supersprint and be done with it!  Wonder what that'd sound like on the end of my M54B25... would it be a bit ricer?

I had good experiences years ago on my old VW A2 GTi 16v with a muffler (part of a cat-back system I sourced) from Dynaflow Magnaflow.  Back then they were more 'V8 specialists', and it was superb on my 2.25" system.   Not sure if the Dynaflow offerings are well thought of in BMW-landia.  

So many choices.

Hmm any bmw  6 cylinder I think the super sprint would make come to life! Not a hint of rice any where.

Got any videos of what the VW sounded like? I did a quick google for dyna flow couldn't find anything.

Maybe I'll just get a super sprint... maybe not. The car hasn't been driven in such a long time and I'm growing impatient haha, I was hoping there was something readily available that sounded classy

sorry about that, I had a senior moment.  Magnaflow.  I updated the post above and added a link.  The magnaflow muffler was part of a full cat-back exhaust kit sourced from Eurosport accessories in LA. I called them up, rocked in a couple of days later, checked the box in my luggage at United Airlines, and took it back to Mexico with me.  Fitted it myself, had the local exhaust shop do the final tube fitting (needed expanding), and 'presto'.  It sounded a bit deeper than stock, not at all drone-y, flowed much better, and had the right bark up top.  Eurosport put together a great kit.  But hey, poxy VAG 4 cyl product.  You'll be needing something for yout six.

Video? I should be so lucky. It was the mid-90's, one needed a VHS-C or 8mm Analogue video camera back then, to record video!  The internet was in its infancy, I connected using dial-up 14k4 modem with custom initialisation scripts, and Compuserve was my ISP.  YouTube hadn't even been dreamt of.  We had it tough #; )

PS - had plenty more torque released from this setup.  

The reason I replaced a full system was that there had been poor quality repairs made by previous owners, using generic parts.

I did some research on this topic as would like a new exhaust for the M3 at some point. I thought the UUC RSC36 sounded nice and so do the Eisenmann sport and race mufflers. Sadly both are expensive options coming in at around $1000USD for a catback system.

Yeah thats a bit pricey, I'd love to hear from someone whos just bought a muffler on its own that works nice with the 6cyl m52 thats cheap enough. Also does anyone know about M52 headers if someone sells them in NZ??

What's wrong with stock headers?

I reckon the go would just be to weld up a cat-back system from some off the shelf muffler and resonators. Trouble is knowing what bits are going to be mint though... Would like a twin exhaust, but with no space on the RHS, exhaust cutout would probably be the way to get that done.

i thought stock headers were frowned upon. I've been slicing mine up to get them around the steering knuckle and im working all good with it but I just thought it better to a hole that idea and get some extractors if Im going through the trouble. Anyone know a nice sound reasonably prices muffly?

Be really careful when modifying the original exhaust.

I made up a M50B30 stroker hybrid and the exhaust from a M3 Evo, headers right back to the rear muffler. The mid section wasn't in good shape so I dumped the cats and crossover section and initially went to straight pipes directly to the OEM rear muffler. The result was disastrous from a noise perspective. It was way too loud and very raspy. I ended up fitting an AdrenalineR 2-in/2-out muffler in the mid section where the ceossover used to be and went to 63mm tube from the headers to the new muffler. This made a big reduction in noise but killed the mid-range tourque and the rasp was still way to high. I'd effectively de-tuned the ehaust so it flowed poorly or even had a big negative impact in the mid-range rpm flow due to impropper back-wave timing. Next I changed the 63mm pipes to 50mm and fitted 2 new short resonators custom built by AdrenalieR in the same position as the original cats. This was to try to replicate the original exhaust and the resonator length was tuned to the mid-range rpm to create the proper timing for the back-wave and to effectively emulate the effect of the original cats. The result was mid-range torque again, no effect to the high rpm torque (perceived) and a lot less rasp.

When you muck around with non-standard exhaust combinations be prepared to spend a lot of extra time and money to rebuild it to get it right. Sometimes the apparent 'expensive' aftermarket options aren't actually that badly priced when you factor in it should work first time...

Had Magoo Mufflers in Dunedin modify my E39 530i exhaust. They had done two of these previously so knew what to expect. Replaced rear resonator with a short straight thru resonator, and the rear muffler with an aussie made sports muffler plus chrome oval tip. The sound is deep and 'purposeful'. Am very satisfied.
