"this V8's for you"

saw this e39 540i (TM 1281435555) and thought of @eliongater's e28 535i - here's your new running gear man!

title should be sung to the tune of "This note's for you" by Neil and the Bluenotes

Don't tempt me ;)

I'd need to check the weight of the engine (vs an m30) and the complexity of the swap first, but I know it's been done...

Sadly not a manual, but I've got a getrag 265 just begging for a V8 bellhousing

VIN is WBADE62040BW73376

it's an M62B44 - non-VANOS.  286hp.  219kg.  310lb/ft peak @3900RPM. Useful link here

it's only a little heavier than your M30B35...

You're right, it'll be easier with the M30B35. 208hp 145kg  225lb/ft @4000ROM.  It's only 78hp down on the V8, which you'll make up in the corners, particularly with a 74kg advantage.

And it'll be easier to reunite the car with an M30 than re-engineer and cert for a V8.

I'm pleased my guess was correct, otherwise lots of furious googling would have ensued. I do know an engine that would fit the bill though...

The downside with the m30b35 is its very expensive to increase the horse power and torque to that of the m62b44.

If you are going stock m30b35 then that is a moot point.

An M54B30 or N52B30 would offer certain advantages... but it wouldn't sound like an M535. There's something specialbasso - about the M30.

it's an M54B30 -  228hp.  130kg.  221lb/ft peak @3500RPM.

it's an M62B44 - varies depending on application - 261hp.  130kg (I'd have expected this to be lighter given 10KG saving with Mg quoted, and the (dreaded) electric fuel pump).  232lb/ft peak @2750RPM.

** EDIT:  I have of course omitted radical and very pricey options such as S50B32 or S54B32.
