M5 Rival

Suspiciously low mileage. Not likely the maintenance on it has been maintained, I'd think.

Is that really the Mercedes equivalent to an E39 M5? It's Auto!

Not even close. Rather crawl over glass for an M5 rather than one of these.

I wonder how much an NZ New '99 M5 with 28km would be? Closer to $50k than $15k I reckon.

If we subtract dealer tax, about 30%, we get 10K which is probably what it's worth privately, maybe,

its so boring!

I thought of it as tacky/kitsch more so than boring. In a BMW, the woodtrim looks classy, if not to my taste. In this, it looks like something out of a porno movie set from the 70s.

Whoa whoa guys, I thought this was an open minded forum!  I like the W210 design and the build quality was excellent.  They were neck and neck back in 2000 with the M5 edging ahead in performance and handling.

At $12-14k I think it's a pretty good deal compared to an $25k E39 M5.  $25k buys you a W211 E55 and that would be a tough choice.  The W211 E55 is a LOT faster.

Interior is pretty bad but plenty of yuck BMW ones like this.

While I wouldn't buy one I don't mind the styling and they aren't bad cars per se

Reckon my V12 would beat it in a rolling drag tho

Actually if you frequent some of the Mercedes forums as I have over the years the W210 platform does not get a lot of love.

The engine in these is meant to be pretty fab though. It's a slightly different beast than the M5. Fast Mercs have always been more muscle car than sports car.

Im amazed how faded the wood is for 28,000kms. I think I commented on the red E60 M5 thread the other day, wrapped in carbon or gloss black that would be a big improvement.

A lot of fast car for the money...

Disclaimer, I sold my W211 E55 for an M5, so read into that what you like :)

The early W210s were not good. Quality control by accountant gave them a well-deserved poor reputation for quality. Any that are still around should be sorted.
The engine is a gem and while it has an autobox, it is one BMW would have killed for.

There is something odd about this one, though. First registered, and declared as 'NZ new' in 2013, yet delivered in March 1999. Carjam thinks it is a 2013 car.

It is expensive, and without more knowledge of it's history it's tough to see the justification. I'm not a fan of the look of the interior (although it will be very comfortable and supportive), and even the pics show one of the rims to be kerbed.

According to an online VIN checker it was a Malaysian destined car when new.

A few years ago I recall reading about a shipment of Mercedes that came out of Malaysia to NZ all with very low mileage that were unable to be registered, maybe this one was.

Must have an interesting back story.

Before I bought my X5 and M5 I toyed with getting one of these for a bit of variety. There was a silver one with much higher KMs for $10K then $8K - sitting for ages at the Trade-In Clearance Center in Welly. It had a yuk blue interior though and was nowhere near as tidy as this one. I don't think the woodgrain is faded - that's just the colour - but I way prefer the interior in this to the one I looked at. What can I say, I like contrast interiors! This does look to be in fantastic condition so for an AMG/Merc enthusiast I think this would be a good deal.

It looks as though the wood grain has been mis matched. Something is off about it.

I thought the higher end later w210s had a darker wood grain near piano black trim, which looks more fitting.

I'm not a fan of wood grain at all, but have come accustomed to it after owning several 116,126,140 Mercedes. My current W140 doesn't bother me as it is so dark it's not really noticeable.

A viable M5 alternative for the day. No so much now. Along with the RS6 and C55, are worth bugger all.

Funnily enough a VX manual 5.7 Clubsport from the same era is E39 M5 money, while a good example of the 300kw GTS are listed in the $30-$40k territory.

I do prefer the earlier W124 and the later W211... (As I prefer the W126 and W220 to the W140.)
From inside though, a W210 is probably a very nice car. Despite my years of Mercedes ownership, I don't think I have ever been in a W210.
