I got the subframe and diff into the car. I had to then take it back out again because the lower and upper control arms couldn't be bolted in with the diff in the way. Rookie mistake. But second time is a charm.

Haha - we got pretty close to making the same mistake :P

The welded spacers on the front brace look nice - good work! :thumbs-up:

Thanks mate.

I'm a slow learner.

Well done on the project and the detail, following this with interest. Once my E46 coupe may end up getting a V8....there are so many nay-sayers online in regards to it not fitting purely due to the sump, which does seem a cop out

Sump on the M62 is pretty nasty, it is a cop out though. I'd just ditch the factory sump and make a simple new type with laser cut pieces. For the engines to fit nicely they need to be quite far reward to clear the subframe and not too thick either as the subframe to block clearance isn't much.

Also the oil pump needs to be taken into consideration as its at the front of the motor. I havnt had a good look at this yet.

How's everything going? Any updates?

A bit slow due to lack of funds. I need to buy adjustable camber plates and one more front control arm and the front end can be installed. Rear end is all installed. Engine bay has been modified and painted.

While I wait for money to buy parts I gave my wifes car a full respray.

Oh yeah of course, what a pain in the ass. Would really need to remove it and run an remote oil pump, almost be best with a basic dry oil sump.

That would sit right where the steering rack is. P4260820.JPG.0779beb3afbb1f2f68111a6904f76107.JPG

Dry sump would be perfect but way out of my price range.

I guess I could make/get made a modified sump with an external oil pump. I would be terrified of it failing though and killing the motor.

Yeah, I think a mechanical external pump, custom mounted and running off the accessory belt would do the trick and be the most reliable etc.

Could probably get a remote mount electric oil pump but I do also question the reliability, that said you could put in a fail safe switch/sensor that cuts the engine if the oil pressured drops or electric motor fails, turning off the engine ignition immediately

I'll re-read the thread, but what are you doing for EMS?
Michael's suggestion of an electric pump, cutting the engine in the event of low oil flow or pressure (pressure ain't everything!) would work.

If you mean ecu then I'm not decided, but probably a link.

haha yeah flow is often forgotten, cold oil, plenty of pressure but low flow is the classic example.

I think it's easier to switch something via pressure though, I'm sure inline oil flow meters exist but the cost and how the data they produce would be used would be the challenge.

Keep the original sump and modify an e39 v8 subframe?

I did investigate this option and had a e39 v8 subframe to play around with.

I decided against it because it would require using the crappy e39 steering box, which was not a compromise I was prepared to make.

Also, I don't know how badly it messes up the suspension geometry.

I know that's what Ray did with the S62 into the E46 vert.

Not sure I'd go that way but it's proven to work.

Don't you find the on center feel of the M5 steering box a bit dull Martin?

Yeah that’s if being fussy. Get an M5 steering box with servotronic. Wouldn’t be gutted.

Its proven but its a compromise. There are better ways of doing it.

Better, as in more expensive?

Similar cost and similar time.

Keeping the existing e46 suspension geometry and steering is the better way of doing it from all my research.

Its just solving the sump and oil pump challenge that instead becomes the issue. Dry sump is the ideal but way too expensive for me. Most people modify the existing sump and move the engine up and forward but I see that as a compromise too.
