E36 Transmission swap - Jatco to ZF possible?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,
I have an auto 1995 320i running a M52B20, single VANOS. My trans is buggered. The first gear change jolts so bad my head nearly snaps off.

Every other gear change after that is fine-ish. If I floor it, the gear change is not as jolty but there is a massive squealing noise.
I have been looking for 2nd-hand transmissions in my local area but they ones that come up for sale are usually ZF and not Jatco.
My questions are:

  • What is the difference between the two in terms of swapping one for the other?
  • Can I rip out my faulty Jatco and bolt in a ZF trans?

Thanks, any help is appreciated.

IIRC the looms are different between jatco and zf.

Get hold of Kerry at Mosen Euro in Hamilton, he will know and will likely have a transmission for you and can fit if required. Tel 8462972.
