Euro surgeons does it. Don't know costs. You can buy the kit and do it yourself for 60euro-ish. I got mine from pixelfix.

Got mine done by "The Circuit Specialist" in Manukau https://www.thecircuitspecialist.com/

Charges $350 and does not use new parts but rather repairs/reapplies existing materials, somehow...

Takes about 3-4 hrs, I took my cluster out and took it into him for the morning.  Can courier of course.

Also a crowd "Get Electronics" in ChCh who did a commodore VY dash for me.  Went to use them again for BMW but they did not reply...

Get Electronics do top work, but are a victim of their own success, two man outfit struggling to keep up with demand, they repair a lot of unrepairable stuff, worth trying the phone number.

I have an entry in my phone called "Cluster repair kev" who's in Chch. Did a great job on my old M5's cluster and was $150 back in 2015. I can provide the ph number via PM. @jeffbebe can also vouch for his work.

The diy is not hard on this at all. If you're at all electronically inclined, I'd say try that.

It is an easy task that takes about 20 minutes and the parts are about $30 trade  , anyone charging more than  $100 is scamming

$100 all in would be a reasonable price. For that price, I might even forego doing it myself. :)

EDIT: It's been awhile since I did mine and I had some details wrong. The pixel fix itself is just 15 Euros from http://www.pixelfix.net/eng/bmw.html I got the one with the lcd also, so it was 25 Euros. Their video is simple to follow (and you can watch before you order...) the box came with everything I needed to effect the fix myself.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.  To bring this full circle.  I had a look at the vehicle and it ended up just the lamps required.  All too easy in the end.

$100 wouldn't be enough for a pixel repair, $200-300 would be more relative for an electronics tech to sort such.

Disassembly, reassembly, parts, time to do the fix and testing would take at least a few hours if you're doing it properly

I dunno mate, I’m not speaking as a tech, or as a business. I am speaking as someone who’s done the repair to his own car. The parts cost 32 euro delivered. I did not spend more than an hour doing it. It was my first time. For $200, I could buy a lot of kits to try again if I failed the first time. I understand this might not be for everyone, but as I wrote above, that $100 figure is one I’d be comfortable paying so as to be lazy.

True I suppose it depends how long it takes then, I'm used to spending a few hours overhauling Toyota dashes with faults.

Haven't seen E39 ones broken down to their basic parts, but I know they are very different.

So it's sometimes not dead pixels, but only the lamps?  Tell me more - I had been intending to replace the pixel strip on my E39, but  it would be good if it turns out only to need a new lamp.

I also have a spare AKspeedo ribbon for the MID. Bought 2 just in case I screwed one up. Was fairly easy in the end and worked great. Just be prepared for some cuts to your hands as the metal edges in those MIDs are real sharp
