What does number in engine bay mean?

Recommended Posts

I don't mean the vin number on the left hand side of the engine bay, but on the right hand side of an e46 engine bay there is also an engraved number.

Mine is 89456766.

I need to know as I'm prepping my engine bay for paint.

Insert your registration into carjam and look for that number.

Also, insert your vin here

http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

same deal, look for that number.

Edit: on mine, that seems to be the format for engine number.

I did a search and couldn't find anything.

I will be filling in the engraved numbers with filler for when I paint the engine bay cause I want the smooth look.

Pretty sure it's the engine number. (same number that's stamped on the block (usually near one of the mounts I think)).

I'm guessing it's so that you can easily locate the engine number, and also ensure that your engine is matched to your chassis?

Is this now the unofficial engine bay painting project thread :Hehehe-min:

Keen to know how much paint you use in an engine bay - dare say you use any where near all of the base coat

probably all of that clear tho

Used only half the basecoat, but would have used less if I had not spilled half of it.

Used maybe a third of the clear.

It needs a polish, but not too bad considering how long its been since I last painted, and the issues I had with the gun.
