Can you tell us more about your supercharger plans?

Is there a kit that enables your supercharger to be mounted up?

Hey Nathan 

there's no kit that i know of, i was going to use the jag xjr supercharger as there was a kit in the states that would mount it up.

But couldn't seal the deal on that so went with the AMG charger. 

I'm just going to set it up the same way as the jag one. Get some custom intake adapter plates made from bmw  to charger. Then will try and use the Bmw fuel lines and injectors, the Charger has an intercooler integrated into the bottom of the charger itself so would "hopefully" sit in the bmw valley pan area. plump it up and either chip the ecu or go aftermarket worst case. 

Thats the rough idea at the moment for it.

Ah this is great. I was thinking about doing something similar with the ute, but i haven't managed to track down a charger yet. Where did you get yours?

I purchased mine off euro1 auto spares. But had a jag one lined up, it was from trade me. But couldn't come to an agreement with the seller

If you keep a look out for any jag xjr model that is getting wrecked, it should have the charger like the one above.

So went to try and put the PMC adapter plate on the box but realized its made for left hand drive for the starter motor. so angled grind the right side to match the left hopefully its fit.

Hi Team 

another small update

so have spent the last week just modifying the adapter plate to fit. 

I had to grind out the holes that bolt to the motor, grind a bit of the box to allow the bolts and starter motor to fit. 

But know she fits perfectly.

Did you dial in the adapter plate on the engine after making the adapter plate modifications ?

Hey Glenn

Wasn't sure what you meant so i googled It :) 

No i didn't dial it in. However the holes that i did make didn't effect the position of the adapter plates itself when bolted to the box or motor. So hopefully the company that made it dialed in.

So just another small update, doesn't look much but spent a few hours on my back putting it in.

Now i can officially say it has three pedals :) 

Best part was i didn't have to take the steering colum off which i read online that i was going to have to do.

master cylinder and clutch lines all put in and ready to go.

Another update Team

This was a couple of weekends work, Can almost see the finish line.

So motor is now mounted, had a couple little hiccups as you do. 

Had to remove the gearbox to get the motor in, had a few rear axle bolts give us grief so smashed them off and had to be replaced. 

New belts put on and asc+t throttle plate removed, new sway bar stabilizer arms and rebuilt Diff from Kayne Barrie with 3.15 LSD

So tried the factory 525i diff but was slightly too long, will need to get it shorten by 27mm.

Left to do. Reattach the rest of the front end. 

                   Secure electric fan onto Radiator

                   Sort wiring out, reverse lights, car to read in neutral and jump starter motor relay.

                   Refit exhaust

And thats about it.

Evening Team

So the day has come finally and we have got the M60b44 with 5 speed swap up and running.

Long time coming but was worth it. shifts really smoothly, sounds great alot quicker that the auto box.

Took her for a few test runs, gave all the helpers a go at drive her too. 

So just small things to sort out now. tidy up electric fan wiring, get a bracket for the clutch fluid reservoir, Gear knob, put bonnet back on and get a final tune.

One question for you guys if you can help out in any way. 

5th gear keeps popping out, it won't even stay in position at all. any ideas of what could be the problem?

Hi Team 

So finally have the 540i sedan all done wof and rego'ed.

All new shift linkage bushing kit, changed the exhaust to v bands for easy of removal, radiator fan switch for the electric fan and swap the wheels to the powder coated white style 135.

Through a long process of elimination found out that the issue with fifth gear popping out was one missing dowel pin between the gearbox and adapter plate. 

Also got some adjustables for it, handles really well now. 

Now all that is left is to book in a tune with Gavin at Hi Velocity.

This will be my new daily driver and i can now get back to my other e46 project :)  another project to cross off the list.

would definitely been keen for a meet up. I haven't booked a time yet but Gavin has told me to touch base after the 10th of Jan. 

Question Ian with flywheel and clutch setup do you have much flywheel/gearbox chatter? 

Also how was your m60b44 motor like when you 1st had it running? mine is idling lumpy which im hoping a tune will fix.

Cool, Gavin's a good dude and super helpful!

I was running a JB Racing Flywheel and stock sachs pressure and unsprung friction plate which was fine.  Upon going to supercharger figured it was best to uprate and I regret listening to the guy at Autoclutch when they were still around.  He modified my 265mm JBR FW to fit an e36 friction plate (240mm I think?) with custom spline and associated release bearing, drilling new dowels into the FW and now everything is custom, uprating the spring force on the pressure plate.  The release bearing he gave me didn't fit onto the shaft of the gearbox and his comment when I questioned him was "it's all custom, what do you expect.  Use a flapper wheel to grind out the centre and make it fit".  I was not impressed after spending a lot of coin.  Setup is OK, but slips a bit when giving it sh*t 2nd to 3rd... which likely means an entirely new setup = $$$.  They shut down about 1-2years ago...

I did run cams in mine too, so was a tad lumpy, but nothing I would expect otherwise?  Motor was running sweet after the rebuild on the standard M60B40 DME.  I did replace all vacuum hoses and modified the PCV setup at the time.  Best to check for vacuum leaks and the MAF before taking it to Gavin.

Hey Ian that sucks to hear about the clutch setup. Hopefully you have a better set up that can handle your 600hp.

The car runs fine on the M60b40 Dme, I put it down to the gearbox and flywheel being a lot lighter which may have put the balance out a bit, so the motor rocks just a little more now making it seem the motor is lumpy. Which is probably creating the excess chatter noise.

Nathan definitely keen to come to check out your project too. The more the merrier i say, lets tee up a day and time.

Hey  hey everyone

long time no post, so alot has happened since last year.

Long story short i made a big F@#K up with the manual swap.

So the PMC kit does work with the zf 310 box i have, so does the flywheel but the clutch side is where i went wrong. The clutch kit that came with it is made for the zf 39dz box (which i also do have)  which states on the PMC website also. The difference is the input shaft and sleeve are bigger on this box same as the 420g boxes, compared to the zf 310 one.

So a few months back notices a release bearing was making a noise, thought that isnt right but kept running the with it. Wasnt till two weekends ago it completely shat itself. Was driving to auckland and all the sudden it wouldn't let me select any gears luckily i was stopping in Waiouru visiting a mate, he lent me his Suzuki swift for the remainder of the trip. 

Towed the car back home and took the box off to find this.

Release bearing was completely wrecked. 

Further investigating i found the pressure plate is also not releasing at all which explains the no gear selecting but at least Friction plate is still mint like new.

the left one is the correct release bearing the right is the broken wrong size one.

as you can see the input shaft holes a different. The right is the M30 clutch that i got and will be using.

Also I think the slave cylinder rod might have been slightly too long  as you can just make out where the release bearing was grinding on the little prongs. The fingers and diaphragm may have been over extended causing the pressure plate to fail.

 

So yeah lesson learnt there. 

Big plans ahead for all my projects though. I have brought a factory zf 310 box with v8 bellhousing from ebay ( currently at customs) this will be replacing the one in the e34 sedan. I also brought a lighten chrome molly flywheel from RHD engineering. Brought a 2nd hand M30b35 clutch kit that's needed to fit onto the RHD flywheel. This will hopefully get the car running mint and i will be able pop up to see Gavin in early April for a tune. Hope to meet up with you Ian and Nathan keen to check out your rides :) 

Also along with the zf 310 v8 box, i scored myself a 420g 6 speed box and associated bits. After some time to think i really want to keep the E34 540i touring factory as possible as i dont want to butcher such a nice clean example. So all i will be changing on it is converting it to a manual, so no more supercharger for that car.

But here comes the fun part, You all may remember a build thread from Eddie, his e46 v8 wagon? well i will soon be the proud owner of it.

I have test driven it and man has he done one of an amazing job on making it look and drive factory with the M60b30 v8.

My plans are to drop my spare M60b40 into it. Convert it to manual with the PMC adapter kit and Zf 39dz box, and lastly super charge it with the one i was going to use for the touring, fun times ahead.

Thanks Eddie for doing the hard part of mounting the thing in and sorting the oil pump issue.

Converting it to m60b40 and manual seems a no brainer.

Yes its a dry sump setup, i think the manual swap is the easy part, eddie did all the hard work of mounting the thing in and getting it running mint.
