Why do new BMW's have tachometers that spin backwards ?

was about to say the same.  zsensible Porsche instrumentation from Zuffenhausen. ?

Wasn’t it Porsche that also had a gauge layout in the 80s that meant the only way you could see some of the information was to open the drivers door and lean out until you were almost horizontal?

The backwards tacho isn't what gets me, it's the f**k ugly "futuristic" look of those full LCD clusters. The 430i one looks great in comparison.

I think they are designed for the iPad generation, touch screens to drag and drop info around. Change things around to your own “style”.

Could be missing the target audience here though..?

If I'm honest I don't have a problem with this concept (with some minor tweaks).

Fully configurable dashboards are a near-term inevitability. The look above reflects modern HUD design language and has a lot of scope.

It's not a replacement for analogue gauges though and each have their place.

Jesus that looks bloody horrible.

The same story with the modern Range Rovers and Mercedes S Class.

These taky digital clusters would put me off buying one, considering that is the part of the vehicle you look at most often.

We will look back at these in 20 years and think wtf (like most people probably do to the VK Commodore interior/dash/instrument cluster).

No one will do the same at the aesthetically pleasing E39, E46 or E34. Timeless designs.

Each to their own I suppose, some will prefer them, others not.

With the head up display there is much less need to take your eyes off the road and look at the dash, key info is literally right in front of your eyes.
