piston rings

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I have a problem with my E87, as far as my very useless car dealer has told me his mechanic believes the issue is my piston rings. white smoke, over heating and sluggish while driving are my main issues, Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to fix this problem? Im starting to wander if I should look at alternative solutions as the car yard has had my car for over 4 weeks now and still no solution. Any help you would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Its probably cheaper to just do an engine swap with a wreckered engine (that isnt dead). Hit up @HELLBM they may have something in stock.

These n46 motors are crap, but it would be unusual for the rings to go.

With these its usually valve stem seals

Is this a diesel or petrol? overheating,  sluggish, white smoke. If petrol with these symtoms would be looking at blown head gasket or cracked head allowing water to entre the combustion chamber at a guess.. As mentioned could be cheaper and more reliable with a different engine.

unfortunately I'm only going off what the car dealer has told me as the car is still with them and their mechanic.  He did mention stem valve seals as well as piston rings however "piston rings" were mentioned a lot, I was also told by other people that a complete engine swap could give me a better outcome. thank you all for your replies.

Cheers

I know this is an old post....but white smoke is more likely to be PCV or other oil leak related issues than it is to be rings on anything but a CRAZY high mileage engine. Hopefully this got resolved and the outcome was better than en engine swap :(.
