Sad end to an F10 M5

Maybe someone has been ignoring the 'top up engine oil' message for too long

"Hi there, yes. The most experienced independent BWM specialist turned out to be BM workshop Greylynn and they have done quiet a few last year. They have indicated if it’s the bearings, it will be around 5k to 7k and for the ones where they had to replace the motor with a used one, they ranged between 15k to 17k. That’s the range we are looking at. Cheers"

Given the car we're dealing with here... that is potentially not too bad. The engine isn't seized, it is likely repairable by an engine builder.

Even if that is the case, budget 20k for a new engine etc, it's well over priced. Plenty on NZ new ones with almost half the kms around 40-45k. Even a m5 comp of 54k

@Gaz fully agree - the market for 'high k's' F10 M5's is small in a normal economic situation and miniscule at present, thinking there's a high chance this'll end up $1 reserve or fixed

Wouldn't be an M car without bearing failure

I feel like only yesterday these were north of 100k.

BMW depreciation hits hard!

I'm a sad sack and track the M5 market... this vehicle was previously advertised with 'tuned to 680HP' ?

Necessary? No. Good idea? No.

Guy didn't like my message and deleted it :(

So if its suspected to be crack pistons because of super knocking the bill for labour is around 5k-7k, hopefully doesnt need a new block or thats gonna cost around 30k-40k but also dont forget getting parts from overseas is currently a nightmare so the wait time is pretty crazy. Realistically its possibly a write off, i couldnt justify buying this compared to the next cheapest F10 M5 (https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-2518397974.htm?rsqid=4e5fee5302c841ab8fc289ead28dd658-004) personally i recommended him to get it checked that its not the pistons as i've seen many go before.

I would've deleted your question too, if thats it. You sound like a time waster trying to tank his listing. Just let the guy sell his car. If it doesn't sell, he will know its over priced.

Likely just another M car treated like crap by various owners and drivers, driving too hard before the oil is up to temperature. Something gives eventually.

Depends on the tune and of course preventative and scheduled maintenance. If the car had the right spec, you could get the engine rebuilt and know that it’s good - not like the F10 is regarded as a classic anyway. lol.

Don't think its tune nor maintenance, BMW V8 Turbos are known for this problem or valve stem seals and that's the reason why it's put me off from buying one. I've seen ones that have done 30,000km or less  that needs new engine because the piston head decides to sh*t themselves
