randomly came across this, havent read it yet but one thing I read from another forum post was this:

four different temperature ranges can be implemented:
* 112°C ECO mode (economy)
* 105°C Normal mode
* 95°C High mode
* 80°C High + mapped thermostat mode
The coolant control sets a higher cylinder head temperature (112°C) if the engine control unit determines ECO mode based on the current operating conditions.

Anyone else aware of this function?

Yup, pretty clever beasty.

The oil pump in them is clever from an engineering standpoint too, all mechanical and able to vary its output as needed.

how hot does your 130i run generally? do you find the above to be true? basically meaning it fluctuates between 80-112 degC

It fluctuates a lot, between 80 and the highest ive seen is like 105, you can watch it change modes in realtime during an italian tune up (where it drops temps the more "italian" the tune up :)

That's quite interesting, I've thought mine runs unusually low (~90C) even when driven hard, will have to have dive it slowly for a while ? to see if it warms up more!

My N55 runs like that.  Runs hot when cruising around.
