Handbrake Adjustment

Recommended Posts

Note: Adjustment of the handbrake cable(s) on models with rear drum beakes should only be necessary when you renew a cable or detach it from the the rear brake assembly for some reason. Failure of the handbrake system to hold he the vehicle usually indicates worn brake shoes or a faulty self-adjusting mechhanism.

1 Raise the rear of the vechicle, and place it on axle stands.

2 Fully release the handbrake lever, then apply the brakes firmly several times with the foot brake pedal.

3 Pull the handbrake lever up five clicks.

4 Tighten or loosen the adjusting nuts by equal amounts until the rear brake shoes just begin to drag on the brake drum. You should feel the same amount of resistance at both wheels when you rotate them.

5 Release the handbrake lever, and verify that the wheels rotate freely. If they don't, re-adjust them.

This is the proper way to do this.
