I thought that it was only the M42 engined 318i's that have a cam chain. As far as I know, the M10 engines still have a cam belt.

I have an M10 with cam chain in my 318i.

In terms of purchasing a 3er the cam belt/chain point is worth noting, however there are more important things to consider.

I looked for about 9 months before I found my wagon & whilst looking I saw many 3ers in many different states. Getting a good straight body is what to look for, as in my experience the mechanics tend to be sound. However I have replaced the rotors and pads which can set up back about two hundee a corner.

The 318i’s M10 motor tends to be bullet proof, but I have seen the inside of a 2.3ltr six done 410K, still with the hone marks showing in the bores – BMW make ‘em tidy! Tidy interiors tend to be difficult to find if looking in the earlier e30’s, cracking dashes are common etc.

Setting yourself a time frame would be my advice, as if you’re keen on them, it’s worth taking time and finding a good one. It definitely paid off in my case. Possibly someone on the shore from here could cruise round to have a glance upon purchase.

yeah advice from buying my car.....take your time.....if you are just patient enough to wait you will find a mint as car within your price range (hopefully!)....me andy would be more than happy to come have a look...theres things you look at once you know what to look for.....maybe even look at getting a damaged and fixing it (aye tim?) do you want manual or auto? a manual 318 would prob be ya best bet for reliability and general all round good ness....and of course can be made to look cool easily (all ya need is $...as always)

good luck

was talking about my complete lack of patience last nyte [i'd could never keep looking for 9 months, thas forever!] ... this is gonna be hard to do!! whenever i go shopping i always come back with something! maybe i'll hafta get i dunno, little car accessories or something instead... but yea, i realise it's definitely worth it if in terms of getting the best car i can :)

about possibly getting a damaged one an fixing it... yea heaps about no, considering i would have absolutely no idea of where to start an end up spending way more on it than i probably should...

in saying that i wouldn't wanna hafta fix it, i'd still want to make it "pretty"

also am definitely getting an auto... spend waaaay to much time in traffic to even contemplate driving manual... plus i'm mostly pretty crap at it. so even if i only drove from red beach to orewa everyday i'd still drive auto ;)

would be choice if someone could come have a look with me sometime, my lack of patience generally equates to impulse buying...

Andrew - saw Mike last night an he thinks it's hilarious that I've talked to you! He thinks I'm gonna turn into this hard out bimmer girl. Yea heaps not likely ;)

Watch out for bimmerboy.. hahah

Just be patient - You could always turn up at the next meet (27th i believe) and see everyones cars and then know what to look for etc.

Theres no point in rushing something you worked hundreds of hours for.

Suspension gone, air con gone & replaced,

Yup, the wife's E36 had these two go too. Replaced both control arms and ball joints and both front shocks in 2.5hrs with the help of my brother tho'. Easy to do and cheap. Got the parts direct from the states, a lot cheaper with our good exchange rate at the mo'.

Go to bmaautoparts.com Don't order from the site but email Patrick Bright at bmaparts@earthlink.net great service

people who dont drive beemers love to tell you how expensive they are to maintain. i dont know why but they just do.

in all honesty the last car i had before my 325 was a mazda familia, 92, and it was more expensive to keep. its only the genuine BMW parts that are expensive. (re: gearbox... :( ) and service isnt all that different from japanese cars.

even if you think you cant spend that long looking, every minute and dollar you spend finding the right car will save you untold cash and heartache in the future. if you find something you like make sure you have it well checked. take it to a specialist. if ur on the shore their are a few really good BMW specialists. they know exactly what to look for. dont use the AA. the AA are for elderly ladies buying toyota corollas. you should come to the meet on the 28th and you can get a pretty good idea of whats out there, bimmerwise.

I spend more on petrol now.

But heres things which are better

Looks

Handling

Performance

Comfort

Any costs now just get slotted under 'necessities of life'. Driving anything else just doesnt feel right anymore.

It all pays off when youre weaving through traffic on the way home, and its handling makes you feel like youre barely moving. Well until you glance at the speedo hahah

haha thanx... well, there's a couple in thursday's t&e that i'm gonna call up about [well, actually a friend of mine is coz i hate ringing people for stuff  ] so we'll see how i go wit those. they're mostly 318i's, 1989/90 in the $4-5k range, auto's [naturally].

there's one at 128k's, that's got new tyres, regularly serviced an had the cambelt serviced...??

there's also an ad that goes "BMW 318i '89, facelift, 2dr, auto, cd player, aw, ac, immac condition". so um... what does "facelift" mean? man i so live up to the "girls don't know anything about cars" cliche :(

The facelift occoured in 1987, with post 88 cars sporting the "botox"

-New headlights (Ellipsoids)

-Larger rear tail lights (see Gus v. Andrew for the difference)

-One strip of chrome around the windows insted of two, front and rear window chrome removed

-Plastic bumpers, rather than steel
