or maybe THIS for quite a bit less. The m5 was 1 of 2 sold new in NZ. And yes, I know this is a replica --- but it is definitely one-of-a-kind.

Fitted new Lemforder Tierod's last weekend and got a fresh Alignment at RaceAlign on Monday. With Suspension now pretty sorted, decided to put in some 98, inflate the side bolsters up and give her a good, sustained spanking. Went for a blast out to the Manakau Heads Lighthouse which (after the hideous Southern Motorway traffic) was fantastic - brilliant views, no traffic and some pretty fun (if a little sketchy) roads. Car was great - really happy with it - didn't miss a beat, flat and direct, but compliant, heaps of feedback and with the 3.38 diff, plenty of power for me on these types of roads. A bit much tramlining for my liking, but a lot of that would have been the nature of the crappy roads. Only bummer was the speeding ticket and 20 demerits doing 98 in what I had assumed was a 100kph zone in Drury. Oh well, could have been worse 😜

Hi, Due to moving overseas I have to urgently part with my long-term project, much too soon for my liking. It's a manual 1996 NZ New 318i Touring with 235,000kms. Car is drivable, but rego has been on hold for about 18 months - I was using it for about a year until I decided to put it on hold when I started commuting by motorbike - so it should probably be trailered away. Pros: Fairly rare NZ New Touring Factory manual Headlining and A pillar trims were re-clothed professionally, using a darker material Purple tag steering rack Leather front seats Comes on staggered 17" style 68s with pretty new, high quality chinese tyres (probably done less than 1000kms on them) - 215/45/17 front, 235/45/17 rear New boot struts Cons: Rough body - needs a little TLC - has a few small surface rust spots, couple small dents and needs a new paintjob as clearcoat is flaking Rear seats are a bit rough A few minor bits of interior trim missing Bonus - as this was a project, it will come with all the following: M54B30 - taken out of E46 with ~190kms which drove well and didn't smoke. All cylinders tested at 150psi. Some maintenance items have already been done: New oil filter housing gasket (and new oil filter) 2x new cooling pipes under intake manifold (plastic ones) New rocker cover gasket New oil sump gasket Comes with bits required to transplant the M54 into the E36: E46 accelerator pedal and plug Engine loom ECU Ancillaries: P/steering pump, alternator, etc Airbox + AFM Fuel filter + lines E46 Radiator New spark plugs (was going to replace after first start) E46 330i front brakes - calipers, cradles, discs and pads Replacement panels (white): Driver's door Front passenger's door Right front quarter panel Nose cone Rear bumper (slightly better than current on car) I'm wanting $4.5k for the whole lot. Car is located in Te Atatu South. I highly recommend viewing. Contact me on 021 293 9471 or direct message to arrange viewing or to request more photos (I've got a lot!). Cheers, Kris

Many of the above points are valid. But I think people with an emotional connection to an E28 number very few.

Hey Chad, I remeber seeing a Borla catback exhaust for about 3k, can't remember where though. I'm not sure if anyone makes units in NZ for the n54. However a straight pipe from the down pipes was going to cost about 1k for a shop to fab it up for me (I was going to provide own muffler and high flow cat). Ended up just leaving it with cateless downpipes and stock exhaust. Just be careful as they can get really droney and raspy.

As far as I’m aware they have to have a cert.

Nothing, it's a remote software update from BMW just like the ones you get at the dealerships. These newer cars have the ability to get the updates installed remotely now but have heard of a few G20 owners in Australia and the UK having issues with the car bricking itself during installation. Great idea in theory with some of the updates you get without having to go to the dealer. Last one I got (although I had to get that one at the dealer) gave me Android Auto which was great.

Made a day trip up to Auckland to grab a door, managed to find a wrecker in Henderson with one in white even so saves me painting it. Big thanks to SE AUTO PARTS for the right door at the right price also, will use again. Tried to avoid traffic but nope ended up leaving at 3pm, so enter a 4.5 hour drive from Henderson to Tauranga, including a Thames detour past ngatea. Swapped the door over the next day, pretty straight forward minus getting that door handle allen key bolt back in. Started to give her a big clean The brake pads are brand new on it. So these must be the extra dust model. Starting to clean up real well

IMO it’s little to do with what the car does, it’s what the car portrays and as people get older they generally get wealthier and want to reconnect to that emotional attachment and hence supply and demand applies, there are bugger all of them, you want one you pay for it. It’s generational you saw it across 60s and 50s cars and now it’s doing the same for 80s and 90s, wether it’s a shitbox or not it really doesn’t matter. It’s the connection to the past that drives it, it drives our tastes and thereby what we value. You could buy a current 330 that would beat the sh*t out of a E34 M5 in every logical actual performance category but it doesn’t have the emotional connection and that’s why they are what they are.

@M3AN Not having a cert when its a requirement, is the same to an insurer as no wof or no reg is. If the car is not legally allowed on the road, you void your insurance.

I reckon it's close to the tipping point where the cost of fuel it's consumed is more than the value of the car.

Hi there. Christchurch based, West Melton. First post, member for some time when I had a 2007 335 Coupe but never posted and moved it on as I'm a liitle less able to climb in and out of them as I used when "I wore a younger man's clothes"!! Moving on a few years and I'm back where I belong. 2001 740i in Titan Silver with black leather. Had a 2001 in Anthracite with grey Nappa leather back in Aus but sold it when we retired over here just over 7 years ago. Regretted the sale ever since. Fast forward to today when I picked this up. Came down from the North Island. One owner, 88k on the clock and M pars factory supplied. All original paperwork with vehicle from Shelley BMW in Wellington, $160k new!! Absolutely beautiful with only a few niggly things to fix. Cheers Archie
