N52s are arguably one of the most reliable engines BMW has ever made, not exactly toyota 4AFE reliable, but still reliable and shitloads more entertaining than a 90s economy toyota engine. Whereas the 4 pots are less reliable than a 4AFE, and less entertaining. There really isnt anything redeeming about them to justify the reliability issues, spending money and time on solving problems on something that doesnt bring smiles when working isnt particularly appealing.

I agree. I wouldn't own an E60 ever because of that reason, although I could likely get by with my skill base, but the E60 styling inside and out doesn't inspire me to want to own one and peruse that kind of repair work. A newer F10 or whatever they are will likely be just as bad in a few years. This is why I have an E34 540i which I consider one of the best BMWs ever made, classic styling for one and the core engineering and electronics are complex enough for the purpose and built at a time when quality of design and construction was higher. My business I operate involves the restoration of electronics on Lexus/Toyota models like Soarers and various others so I find restoring late 80s early 90s electronics is very practical. It's much the same story for the E34. Its reasons like this these cars can be able to remain working for decades to come. A number of changes in electric design mean that same approach is not as viable on E60+ models, at least from what Ive seen on the surface. So much for sustainability, just a throw away society!

one of many projects I am finally getting time to work on in level 4 is a wheel straightener that I am putting together. I started about a year ago but have actually made some progress now. Starting point was a front hub from an e39 at pick a part, then a 5mm aluminium spacer to take the place of the absent brake disc, the frame is 150 x 75 PFC ( parallel flange channel) and this holds a small hydraulic ram from a panelbeating kit, I think it is a 10T unit. I cast an aluminium block with a radius to suit about a 14 inch rim, and drilled it to fit the end of the ram. At the back of the ram I have a series of coach bolt heads to hold the ram in place while allowing for vertical adjustment, the front of the ram is held in a pipe saddle clamp that will move up and down in 2 vertical slots and be secured with plastic hand nut things. Behind the back of the ram I have a flat steel surface to attach a magnetic holder for my dial indicator so I can check progress as I go. I am hoping to straighten 3 rims from 3 different sets that I currently have in my driveway, including the one I am using for testing (in the photos) and I am hoping to be able to do it without having to apply heat, but that remains to be seen!

Some users get (multiple) warnings and are up for days with no price. I report them and nothing happens. Others are removed without explanation even when borderline. Guess you're not in the cool club? I just list everything on TM now.

@E30 325i Rag-Top I’m more gutted that the car has reached that state. I hope that whoever buys it restores it to its former glory!

I can't specifically remember this post as there are a number removed from the For Sale section on a very regular basis. You are correct, non-BMW posts are fine provided all the other rules are met. For a TradeMe link both a photo in the Bimmersport post, and a price in the post are still required - just putting a link to TradeMe is not acceptable. Also, it should be for a TradeMe item that has an Asking Price or a "Buy Now" if it is an auction then there is no defined price and that is not a "For Sale" and should be in the TradeMe Discussion Forum. As per the For Sale Section Rules - "All threads that dont adhere to these rules WILL be removed without warning or explanation". It is not possible to contact every member and what needs to be done for it to be included, there is not enough time in the day. It would have been removed for a reason, posting exactly the same thing again would get the same result. If the post meets all the requirements of the For Sale section then happy days. I have only just seen your original post which is why there has been no response up until now, it is not a case of silence being acceptance. It would be spotted quicker if you message and Admin or Modertor directly rather than putting up an open post.

Yeah buy yourself a manual and a cheap tool kit. They are the most simple car to maintain. Also M539 is currently working on a E30 on his channel. Might give you some inspiration.

Get stuck in, DIY it. Doesnt get much easier to work on than an E30 and parts are plentiful. Good car to learn on and there is nothing you need a specialist for.

I think you might find that while free of turbo's the electronic modules in this car are both numerous and not exactly reliable. I do like the car, my wife has a an E61and its a lovely car; but it is saturated technology and based on previous ownership of other e60 models your interest may wain when you have to problem solve or pay someone to problem solve finicky electronics. Not to mention rod bearings and SMG issues.

Having owned many E60 and E61's I too was amused by the notion it was the lesser technology, purist choice. Pricing, well we all have our opinions, but I think another angle to look at it is placement in market, it should be priced between the C6 S6 and C6 RS6. Which this isnt.

The work you are going to do on an M5 is not going to be fun work I can tell you that. If it's not bearings or SMG then you are going to be swapping $1000+ modules which shouldn't be failing in the first place. I can think of at least 10 modules off the top of my head. Interesting and capable car for sure, but...

Hi Guys I am the person behind D1Racing New Zealand so I'll clear up any comments below Okay so lets say you buy two TRW rotors from repco $96 each plus $35 a rotor =$262 basically the same price as I'm offering, Yes how else are you going to do it?You cant cast slots into a disc face this is what DBA street series are.Only race discs have different heat treatment and metals Good call,China has some of the lowest labour costs in the world hence why Fisher and Paykel have moved there along with cadbury. They are willing to produce products for the rest of the world unlike the states which make it hard for foreigners to do business.Agreed alot of parts that do come out of china are badly made but my suppliers of brake rotors have had alot of success with their products. I've said glenn I'm more than happy to send you a pair of rotors out for you to try and let me know your thoughts on. What do you mean by copy?all my rotors are machined here on a CNC mill by an expert machinist, when you buy a DBA disc you are paying for the brand name, distribution, marketing and a nice box unless your a Metallurgist and can prove otherwise I'd appreciate you not making those comments about my products. As for the white boxes,if you have received a rotor in a white box this mean you have bought directly from an importer/distributor.These discs are purposely importe in plain boxes as they are bought by all the dealerships to fit to their customers cars they are also sold to the large chains to brand themselves. For those of you who like rotors in red boxes please tell me which one is which out of these rotors there is a zimmerman brembo chinese and a TRW.

If that's the problems your having, its time to change your supplier to a more reputable supplier that stands behind there product. In the thousands of rotors we sell each year the number of faulty rotors we see back has actually decreased since changing to Asian suppliers! Believe me its way to expensive to ship heavy rotors half way round the world then warehouse and sell them only to have them come back! We as suppliers to the trade can not afford to import and sell dud products (especially brakes!). Your generalisation that all product from China in a white box is crap is not helpful. The market in NZ is very price driven (white packaging is cheaper), the best quality and price is currently from China. Maybe in a couple of years you will be moaning about crap product from India

Glenn, Did you know Brembo has a manufacturing facility in China? So who's to say your beloved BNT Brembo's aren't crap chinese!Having sold disc brakes for eight years now. I see less problems with Chinese rotors on both Japanese and European cars than I did selling only European sourced product. In saying that I still have access to Zimmmerman for those who want to spend more.
