Hi all, still quite new to the whole forum thing, not sure if creating a new topic is the normal way to share this. My E46 M3 has been hideously down on power recently and for some reason I thought nothing of it, also noticed a terrible noisy valve train sound whenever I was revving over 3k. Did a bit of listening in the engine bay and realised the vanos was rattling like mad. Long story short after pulling it all apart I noticed all the typical wear points were, well....worn. Being as meticulous as I am with my cars I ordered almost everything S54 related from beisan systems in the US, including all new seals and the exhaust timing chain guide which was on the brink of failure. However I was pleasantly surprised to see my cam sprocket bolts were already replaced with the updated parts. Oil pump disc and exhaust sprocket are both toast with about 1mm of play in their movement, spline shaft bushings are shot also. Hopefully $1750 nz worth of vanos parts should remedy my issue. Would be nice to have it back on the road before Christmas. Any tips or tricks for reassembly is greatly appreciated as a 19yr old 2nd year mechanical apprentice this sure is a daunting job on my baby!

It's old news really, as I've had this car 9.5 years. I figured it should be time I made a project thread for it! Purchased 28 Mar 2012 from Auckland with 112k kms on it. I'm the first NZ owner. It's Orientblau Metalic, hence the name. 2002 model. I've done plenty of work on it. Brake rotors (Stoptech) and Pads (Akebono Euro), and parking brake kit. Suspension: Sachs OEM shocks, Meyle HD & Lemforder; thicker ARBs Wheels: Style 194 with RE003 225/45R17, 245/40R17 Tons of maintenance: PCV, Cooling, Coils, all o2 sensors, VANOS seals (Beisan), engine and trans mounts, oil pan gasket, the usual valve cover gaskets, fully rebuilt trans, fuel pump, replaced broken rear spring a couple of times (first time wrong springs supplied), window regulators. A few minor changes: MD deck to CD deck (factory). Next up maintenance: high pressure fuel line, VANOS oil line Possibly the springs (OE Msport?) Fix the stereo speakers Fit new sunroof seal (preventative maintenance) Next up changes: Msport steering wheel (I have the wheel, need a post-recall airbag), and multifunction integration Programming for all doors unlock, eliminate reversing 'bong'. Maybe a manual conversion in the distant future? She's part of the family, can't seem to part with her. Enjoy driving her too much. Here she is when we first bought her, stock as a stock thing. The wheels are long gone, there's a bit less paint from 9.5 years outside. Character! She still looks good with a wax job.

Thanks for the input @Sammo ... nothing is a direct fitment with my engine swap 😂 So will be manufacturing (likely in Australia) no matter what I do but just need to decide on the spec. I might go with the M3 sizing as a safe option and considering I'm no suspension guru !! Where did you get the ST gear from ? I was looking at that as its not that much more than Koni Yellow's plus springs ... does it feel like a good matchup with the M3 bar ?

Mine started life with orange indicators but personally I prefer the Euro style clear lights. 19 year old N42 is good going I would have thought...

I just leave mine on auto and adjust the fan speed to my liking.

Don't mind a bit of Orientblau E46 touring (though yours has a better engine). HAY357 still alive and kicking 8 years after I sold it though

The passenger side doesn't have control of the windscreen airflow.

Dunno about rough, but I think it was an auto 4-door 323i.

Thought you’d get a flood of choices being that it was 50% off TM basic listing yesterday

Sorry to hear that @Sammo, another one will come along

10k covers the mismatched seats and black one is smg. One thing I learnt having just sold and buying a new house is that buyers are liers. There are what people think its worth but they aren't the ones buying. The ones buying know how much but keep tight lipped on it.

It is, but it's a whole 10k cheaper than the blue one - both the same year, same kms and manual. Fight !!!

Did put an offer in on it, will see how I go (few other interested parties as well as expected)

Doesn't mention that in the auction. Ive cured minor ones in the past with better gear oils but guess it depends on what its actually like. Either was id hold out for a decent FL 325i as im sure you'd save time and money in the long run.

$7,200 for PFL auto seems very sensible to me, looks like some of the interior trim is wrapped in matte carbon. https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/cars/bmw/130i/listing/3354969997

If it's a coupe (this probably goes for sedans also), you need to disconnect everything in the trunk lid before you can pull that loom out. If you remove the 3rd brake light you might be able push the wires out, I don't recall. Only other option is to chop. When I had to replace the loom on my coupe, I cut the whole thing in half and added a connector in the middle so (entire) boot lid removal in the future would be simple.

^ This, its night and day even when mildly driving hard. I spent nearly half what I paid for the Birds B1 package on the 130, including the quaife. Was it worth it? Financially no it makes no sense, but would I do it again - Yes. One could make the same argument about any performance leaning car though. If you want to make wise financial decisions, buy a leaf.

This week I have met two distinct types of car people, on the one hand I had a couple of guys who were genuine car enthusiasts checking out the M5 and I was more than happy to talk rubbish and answer any questions - great experience. On the other end of the scale were the totally mono brand focused anorak wearing crowd, by the looks of it the Porsche owners club. I dropped into the local New World and saw this gaggle of beetles and unmasked folk (apparently they are immune to any virus - just don't tell them) parked up and having a good old chat, as a car guy I can appreciate any metal (well most...). So with that in mind I thought it would be nice to park up, say hi, and take some pics - I like a bit of 911 regardless of year. I soon noted from the general glare of disapproval I got on approach in the wagon that this was a closed thing and I should just "F off", bit of shame - continued on my way and did my shop. They were still parked up when I left so I figured I may as well reinforce the stereotype and gave them a good old v10 salute as I left. 😁

Lots of controversy over this back when I worked at Repco...a long time ago now. Used to order in the 10w60 TWS stuff for a number of m3/e39 M5 customers directly from Castrol. Not sure if it's now been superseded but they were very particular on it being TWS rather than the normal 10w60

Home from the paint shop with Work wheels now fitting. Fitted the modified OEM M3 mirrors. Gave the interior an individual look with brushed aluminium trim with leather arm rests.

If anyone in a shop, garage, etc. says to me "it's any easy fix" my reply is usually along the lines of "it won't take you long to sort it out then will it?" with a few choice expletives if necessary. Nothing like customer service...

Sold to someone else unfortunately - so a sub 24hr sale - at least we know what a clean PFL 323i manual is worth - $17,500. I had an offer accepted but was based on including 15" weaves - they turned out to be 14" so renegotiated and it fell through - meh!
