I have gone though this same thing but with the m54 and m57 e53 x5’s gm 5 speed auto, but everything I found was pretty much hearsay, so no concrete evidence, apart from different gear ratios. Otherwise there was a full manual conversion on trademe with a six speed box

Got my partly broken x5 it’s own partly broken x5.

I had the same thing on my 94 316i compact! Worse thing was it was dealer serviced most of its life, and had 220k on the clock.

That sucks man! So much time and effort for some careless person to screw it all up! Good luck for its next reiteration

As long as it’s the 5 speed it’ll fit, assuming they got the 6 speed in the facelift

As per title, searching for a good GM5l40e for an ‘02 pfl diesel x5 so I can go backwards again. cheers

Finally had a spare moment to fill the diff and refit the exhaust on the m3 last night. Also fitted my new intake. Now need to redo that hose to the booster round the back to make it look a bit nicer.

Finally got the m3 into the garage to replace the leaking diff pinion seal. Got all the. It’s out the way, old seal out, and to find the one that was listed as the correct part isn’t. So onto realoem for the right part number and rang bmw this morning to order one through them, and should be here tomorrow to get that job finished up. while I was there, discovered the rest diff mount top brace has cracked, and maybe the weld around the base of the mount. So will get that fizzed up asap

Yea most I’ve seen are the v8 or the m54 being wrecked. The m54 does share the same box, but I seeing that most people say the m57 box has stronger internals, so not sure if wise to use one, and with looking to remap it as well.

Where has everyone mounted their seatbelt mounts on the tunnel of an e36? Best place I found was right where the centre hanger mounts and think I’ll have too much angle if I move it back by the drive shaft hoop

Have finally had a moment to do some basic checks on the x5. Goes through all forward gears no probs, but can shift a bit rough. drained a bit of oil out the pan and is not looking good! Very dark and sparkly for something that has only done 10k since having the torque convertor replaced and fluids flushed, so my guess would be the clutch packs gone, as it does have some reverse. replace? Rebuild? Or manual/zf auto swap….

Ray is the master, and would be the man to ask! hopefully get it here late this coming week and can sus it out. My towie mate picked it up and actually drove it through to Cromwell from Queenstown and said it was super tidy and drove well otherwise, so am hoping can get it sorted easily enough

Hi guys, have recently acquired an x5 with the issue of no reverse gear, but Drives forward no problems. Has anyone had repaired/ or done themelseves, and was it easy/cost effective enough? from what my extensive research has told me, is that it’s a GM 5L40E box, and was a common issue, so have found a replacement sonnax remanufactured valve body to fix the issues from summit for about $600US dollarydoos. seems simple enough to replace myself, but just seeing what everyone else has done. cheers

In other news! Sold the 335i, bought a momo wheel, hub adapter and a set of xyz’s coil overs for the compact, so spent a couple days fitting all that up, pumping the rear guards to fit the 17x9.5 arc-8’s, as well as getting the intercooler system plumbed up and working

It came!!! such a work of art!

Was looking to build up a spicy m42 for my e30, but would cost about the same as this, and already have a set of RHD itbs, and be cool to have another S motor in the stable

What would you say drivability would be like if it was in a street car…

Took the 335i for a wof a few weeks ago…but turns out it had been green stickered, so had to take it to VINZ/VTNZ to sort that. But my usual wof man said about the tint strip being a bit low. So pulled that off to reveal it was cracked underneath 😪. So $600 later it has a new windscreen. Then yesterday finally had time to take it to VINZ, $203 for the pleasure and it passed!! So now to sort the horrendous exhaust, in both looks and noise, tidy up the rear bumper, enjoy it for a bit then sell it on to put the funds towards the m3, compact and e30. Treated the M3 to an expensive little something two weeks ago, that will hopefully be here just before xmas… so will post that once it’s here
